NVIDIA has just announced that its first-ever DGX-1 deep-learning server has found a home, and it couldn't be more appropriate. That new home is with OpenAI, the world's largest non-profit artificial intelligence research agency, which is based in San Francisco. If the OpenAI name sounds familiar but you can't quite place why, it's probably because we've talked about it a couple of times before. NVIDIA today introduced a new graphics card option for its GRID virtual desktop platform. It's the Tesla M10 and it's intended to make it more affordable for businesses to deliver virtualized desktops to all of their employees through a subscription model that starts at just $2 per user, per month (when signing up with a 3-year plan). The pitch from NVIDIA is that business applications have grown beyond simple documents and spreadsheets where 2D acceleration was sufficient. Modern applications, including Outlook, Office 2016, web browsers, Adobe Photoshop, and even Windows 10 can all take advantage of GPU acceleration. A few weeks back, during its GPU Technology Conference, NVIDIA announced a new Quadro-branded graphics card for the professional workstation market. That card is the Quadro M2000 we’ll be showing you here today. The Quadro M2000 is a low-power pro graphics solution featuring a GPU based on NVIDIA’s Maxwell architecture. At last week’s GPU Technology Conference, NVIDIA’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang unveiled a couple of key products and technologies that target the High-Performance Computing, or HPC, space, including the Tesla P100 data center accelerator and its companion DGX-1 deep-learning system, which is a powerful server that has up to eight Tesla P100 cards at its core. Yesterday, during his keynote address at GTC 2016, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang made a number of interesting announcements and disclosures. We saw Apple co-founder Steve “Woz” Wozniak take a virtual tour of Mars and witnessed the official unveiling of NVIDIA’s Tesla P100, which is based on the company’s bleeding-edge, GP100 GPU. GP100 leverages NVIDIA’s forward-looking Pascal GPU architecture and features 16GB of HBM2 memory, all built using TSMC’s 16nm FinFET manufacturing process. NVIDIA just pulled the wraps off its fastest GPU and compute engine yet: the Tesla P100. This new GPU powerhouse is based on NVIDIA’s next generation Pascal architecture, which means that it’s built on a 16nm FinFET process. But even with thoroughly modern FinFET process tech, the Tesla P100’s die size measures 600mm2 due in part to the 15.3 billion transistors that comprise the new compute engine — nearly twice that of Maxwell, for reference. The specifications of the Tesla P100 are second to none, as double-precision performance is rated at 5.3 teraflops (TFLOPs), while single-precision performance comes at 10.6 TFLOPs. Netgear has released a new line of high-end-yet-consumer-friendly Network Attached Servers (NAS) dubbed the RN210 family. They are available in both two-and-four bay models, and this time around we’ll be examining its two-bay model, the RN212. Keep in mind, however, that almost everything we cover here applies to the four-bay model as well, which goes by the moniker RN214. The big deal with this NAS is that, according to Netgear, it’s the “only ARM-based NAS that delivers full HD 1080p to 480p transcoding,” with the purpose being the ability to stream content from the NAS to your smart phone or tablet without any dropped frames. The router game is heating up once again, after being dormant for what seemed like an eternity, thanks to new iterations of the Broadcom XStream platform. We first examined this platform for 802.11 AC routers back in October when we rounded up four AC3200 routers from Netgear, D-Link, TrendNet, and Asus. We then added one router to the mix with our analysis of the Linksys EA9200, but all five of those routers were based on the first gen of Broadcom’s technology, which allows for up to 3.2Gb/s spread across three channels. Whether it be from a GeForce GTX-equipped PC to one of its SHIELD devices or from its cloud-based GRID beta service to a SHIELD, NVIDIA has been at the forefront of game streaming for a quite a while. Today though, NVIDIA is kicking its game streaming business up a few notches by launching a new service dubbed GeForce NOW. NVIDIA's Maxwell architecture has already torn up the gaming world, thanks to cards like the GeForce GTX Titan X and the GeForce GTX 980. NVIDIA recently took time to bring that same Maxwell goodness over the workstation market as well and the result is the new Quadro M6000, NVIDIA's new highest-end workstation platform. Like the Titan X, the M6000 is based on the full-fat version of the Maxwell GPU, the G200. Also, like the GeForce GTX Titan X, the Quadro M6000 has 12GB of GDDR5, 3072 GPU cores, 192 texture units (TMUs), and 96 render outputs (ROPs). The concept of net neutrality has been a hot-button topic over the past few years, particularly as evidence by fundamental ISP misconduct that has grown more prevalent. In addition, an increasing number of customers have found themselves caught in the crossfire between two huge corporations (ISPs and content providers especially) with little to no recourse. Net neutrality, as it's generally explained, is the idea that no company should be allowed to treat traffic differently than other traffic. One of the most anticipated announcements of GDC this year has been Microsoft's unveiling of DirectX 12. The event today was light on some details, but didn't disappoint -- DirectX 12 looks like a huge step forward for gaming. The problem DX12 wants to solve is the same issue that drove Mantle. DirectX 11 isn't very good at allocating resources efficiently, the API's performance is often choked by single-threaded CPU performance. GPUs are already far faster than CPUs (as shown below), so limiting the graphics card's performance by choking it with a single-threaded CPU is a major problem.
