Zak Killian

Ever since playing Joust on his family's Atari 800XL 8-bit computer as a youth, Zak has been hooked on PC and console games. His passion for gaming as a kid led to an interest in PCs as a teenager, which ended up with him founding his own PC repair shop in the year 2000. Decades later, he's still building, still gaming, and still arguing on the internet with any opinion anyone has. A former writer of news and reviews for The Tech Report, Zak is a modern-day Renaissance man who may not be an expert on anything, but knows just a little about nearly everything.

Intel's published a reviewer's guide for folks taking a look at its recently-released high-end mobile GPUs, the Arc A730M and Arc A770M. We can't publish the guide, or any part of it, so we won't. Intel did give us the go-ahead to talk... Read more...
The GeForce RTX 30 series is already super fast. The higher-end cards in that family chew up and spit out games at high resolutions the way cards from five years ago were just starting to master 1080p. It gets a little bit silly at times... Read more...
Looked at the prices of DDR5 memory lately? The newer, faster, all-ECC system RAM is coming down in cost slowly, but it's nowhere near as cheap as ubiquitous DDR4 SDRAM. Plus, due to the latency advantages of hot-clocked DDR4 versus the... Read more...
NVIDIA's DLSS is one of those few technologies that comes along every so often and legitimately delivers the seemingly impossible: more with less. AMD's first attempt at challenging DLSS wasn't quite as advanced; while the original... Read more...
Do you have a DOS box? No, no, not the excellent DOS emulator software—I'm talking about a dedicated older PC for DOS software. Mostly popular among retro gamers, building a DOS box is a tricky task in 2022 as much of the necessary... Read more...
Some of the older overclockers will recall the days when the biggest gains to be had were by overclocking a processor's "FSB", or "Front Side Bus". FSB overclocks haven't died, exactly, they're just not called that anymore because we don't... Read more...
When we saw Intel's Arc Alchemist GPUs in the figurative flesh last week, there were a few oddities in the presentation. Some of them can be explained as confusing Chinese-to-English translation issues, but differences in numbers stick out... Read more...
The PlayStation 5 is gigantic for a game console. There's no two ways about it; Sony's latest dedicated gaming system is a beast of a machine that occupies more space than a typical Mini-ITX custom PC. It's bigger than the Falcon Northwest... Read more...
It's astonishing how far CPUs have come in just the last few years. After stagnating at 4 cores while slowly growing single-threaded performance for nearly a decade, mainstream desktop CPUs have seen explosive growth in both single- and... Read more...
The AVX-512 instruction set has had a bizarre history. Originally introduced with Intel's Xeon Phi processors based on the "Knights Landing" design, it later found its way into the company's server processors starting with Skylake-SP in... Read more...
An important part of qualification testing is running the processor through a wide variety of benchmarks and stress tests to make sure it performs properly in each workload. That's one reason that we constantly see "leaks" of new and... Read more...

You probably didn't know this, but Bethesda Softworks actually got its start developing science-fiction games. In fact, some of its earliest titles were actually based on the Terminator film license. The studio is now by far most famous... Read more...
There are two parts to making a microprocessor. That's obviously an oversimplification, because there are actually a multitude of parts, but the two highest-level are design and fabrication. It's all well and good to design a... Read more...
