Apple has Spotify in its sights as the company to beat in the streaming music industry. Spotify currently has the most subscribers out there (75 million paying subscribers), but Apple is catching up. Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that Apple Music now has 50 million subscribers on the Bloomberg Television program “The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations.” Cook says that the service has over 50 million users between paid members and trial users. Apple Music and Spotify are in the middle of a battle for paid music subscribers and right now Apple Music is losing. Spotify boasts 70 million paid subscribers to Apple’s 38 million subscribers. About a week ago we talked a bit about the rumors floating around that Spotify was working on a refreshed version of its mobile app and free tier service. New details on the revamped service have turned up and according to the rumors some users are already seeing a new UI and features. Spotify fans will be glad to hear that the streaming music giant is set to enter the hardware space with some sort of gadget for the car. Spotify is headed towards a pivotal moment with an initial public offering (IPO) looming next month. It's been a while since we heard much out of the RIAA after the organization was frequently in the news during its hunt to force anyone who even thought about illegally downloading music to pay damages. At times, the RIAA filed suits against deceased people essentially making it look like the bad guy to many music fans. Spotify is handing out some harsh warnings to Android users that are using hacked apps, bypassing its paywall to access premium content without paying. Spotify's premium tier allows listeners to skip the commercials and download tunes directly to their devices. Spotify has sent out warning emails to an unknown number of users warning them against using the hacked apps. Spotify might be the biggest music streaming service out there right now, but that doesn't mean that it is turning a profit. Spotify has filed with the SEC to allow it to begin selling shares publicly via an IPO. Spotify will be listed on the NYSE and will use the ticker name "SPOT." Microsoft has announced that the end is near for its unloved Groove Music app. As of December 31, 2017 the Groove music app will no longer offer the option to stream, purchase or download music. However, Microsoft says that it will continue to invest in and update Groove Music app on all Windows devices to support playback and management of owned music.
