If a report this week by The Verge is accurate, Apple is quietly encouraging music labels to part ways with streaming music service Spotify. Apple is reportedly developing a Beats streaming service that would compete with the likes of Spotify and YouTube. The service is expected to appear in the next version of iOS, likely this summer. Apple’s efforts to undermine Spotify are apparently drawing some attention from the Department of Justice, which is already keeping an eye on Apple for past issues.  It’s easy to see how talking to music labels about their contracts with Spotify could raise questions for DOJ officials, but there has been no word on whether there is (or will be) any official... With more than 100 million record sales under his belt, rapper Jay-Z is already one of the most successful musicians, ever. But music is only part of Jay-Z’s estimated $520 million empire, which also features a clothing line and 40/40 Club bars. Now, the rapper is adding streaming music company Aspiro to his portfolio, to the tune of $56 million. Based in Sweden, Aspiro is the kind of music streaming company that is destined to attract attention from investors like Jay-Z’s Project Panther Bidco Ltd. Aspiro has two thriving music streaming services, including WiMP and Tidal, the latter of which has been compared to Spotify by Forbes. Tidal offers hi-fidelity, subscription-based music streaming,... Read more...
Another year is almost in the books, but before we head into 2015, Spotify took a stroll down memory lane and revealed what we collectively listened to most this past year, which turned out to be Ed Sheeran. He beat out Eminem, Calvin Harris, Avicii, and David Guetta (in that order) for top male artist on the streaming service, while Katy Perry vibrated our eardrums more than any other female artist. The rest of the top 5 in the female category include Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey, Beyonce, and Lorde. Unfortunately, Spotify doesn't include the exact number of times each artist was streamed, so it's impossible to compare Katy Perry to Ed Sheeran, or to know if the top 5 groups (Coldplay, Imagine... Online services are slowing coming around to the idea that not all of its customers are single users who never learned how to share. The latest to experience this epiphany is Spotify, which is rolling out a discounted family plan for multiple member households. With Spotify Family, up to four members can share a single billing account while keeping music listening preferences separate. Each person on a Spotify Family plan has a separate listening history, recommendations, and playlists -- everyone has their own account, in other words. These are Premium level accounts, too. That means you and little Billy can both listen to music offline, play any song at any time on any device, and not be bothered... Read more...
It should strike no one as a surprise that music streaming is big business. But did you know that it's become so big, that it's begun to seriously eat away at downloadable music revenue? According to the Recording Industry Association of America, it has, and the fact that iTunes revenue dropped 12% in the first six months of this year highlights the fact well. In the same time that iTunes managed to drop 12% to settle at $1.3 billion, streaming music rose 28% to reach $859 million. That's a staggering gain, and could be a real sign to things. Being in Canada, I've had very little access to quality music services, but Spotify recently kicked-off a beta for its service, and I was quick to give... Read more...

The chances that your data has been exposed by hackers in the last 12 months is nearing 50%, and it’s probably not your computer that gave up the goods. It was one or more of the dozens of companies you trust to keep your personal information safe. A new study by CNNMoney estimates that the past 12 months have seen as many as 110 million Americans have their data exposed by hacks – and many of them suffer that fate more than once. CNNMoney puts the total number of hacked accounts in the neighborhood of 432 million. Ouch. Target announced a new Digital Advisory Council this week to help it improve security. The Council includes Sam Yagan (CEO of Match.com), Roger Liew (Orbitz), Ajay... Read more...
There are data breaches and then there are data breaches. The Target breach, for example, was (and continues to be) a total disaster for the company with millions affected. Other hacks are made better or worse by a given company’s attitude and response. Spotify has apparently experienced some sort of breach of its own, but if you’re going to get hacked, this is a best case scenario. A total of one user has been affected according to a post by Spotify CTO Oskar Stål, but even so, the company is hitting the big red button just to be safe. “We’ve become aware of some unauthorized access to our systems and internal company data and we wanted to let you know the steps... The sands of the ever-fickle music industry are shifting again, and this time it’s Apple that has to scramble to adjust. Once the king of digital downloads, Apple is facing a reported double-digit drop in music sales, largely because of competition from streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify. In response, Apple is considering launching a Spotify-like service of its, according to three sources who spoke to Billboard. Apple already has its iTunes Radio which is more similar to Pandora than Spotify, but Apple may have outsmarted itself by building in too many features to the service to make it quite as carefree to enjoy as some other options. Further, there have apparently been some... Read more...
Today was supposed to be Winamp’s last on earth, but some last-minute nerd heroics may save the beloved music player. The rumor that Microsoft might snag both Winamp and ShoutCast from AOL appears to be legit, as TechCrunch reports that a deal is being finalized as you’re reading this. The site’s source didn’t specify that Microsoft is the potential buyer, but it would make sense considering the previous rumor. While the particulars are being nailed down, it’s likely that Winamp will be left alone in the interest of both parties. Spotiamp Regardless whether or not Winamp is the recipient of a holiday miracle, there’s a nifty piece of software called Spotiamp... Read more...
Spotify wants to be your go-to service for online music streaming, and with the help of investors who believe in the company's future plans, it just might emerge the winner. In a new funding round led by Technology Crossover Ventures, Spotify added $250 million to its purse, thereby valuing the streaming service at $4 billion. Not bad for a start-up. In fact, Spotify is one of the most funded start-ups of all time, Reuters reports. Even though competition is stiff in the streaming music game, Spotify hasn't had much trouble raising money. The service raised $100 million a year ago from a group of investors that included Goldman Sachs, plus another $100 million during a separate round of funding.... Read more...
It may seem that the world needs another streaming radio service like it needs a hole in the head, but Nokia is driving ahead with a new one called Nokia MixRadio to mix it up (as it were) with the likes of Spotify and Pandora. MixRadio will replace the former Nokia Music service, and it does have some features that competitors don’t, including the fact that you don’t have sign up for anything and the absence of ads. MixRadio uses your own listening habits--thumbs up, thumbs down--to create a personal listening experience, and the initial offerings will be “weighted” with your favorite artists. The service also scans your locally-stored music and purchased tracks. With... Read more...
