When Sony released its PlayStation 3 way back in 2006, it came with a large and very impressive feature list. While Sega introduced the internet to consoles with its Dreamcast in 1999, Sony brought none other than Linux to consoles with its PS3. At the time, the capability felt exciting, and in many ways, completely unexpected. Sadly, what was also completely unexpected was Sony's decision to pull the feature in 2010. The overall capabilities of what a Linux distro on PS3 could provide were pretty modest compared to what we'd expect today, but the ability to install another entire OS was fun, even if it was mostly used as a learning tool or fun project for many. Once enterprising users figured... Read more...
If you have been thinking about getting a game console, now is the time to pull the trigger. There are multiple sales out there, the latest of which is a flash sale in the PlayStation Store with Sony marking down a whole bunch of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 games by up to 70 percent. And by "a whole bunch" we mean well over 100 titles available at massive discounts, along with a collection of movies in standard definition and high definition. "Take a little trip to PS Store this weekend and set your peepers on discounted games like Overwatch Game of the Year Edition, Dragon Age: Inquisition Game of the Year Edition, Uncharted 4, and so much more!," Sony says. Indeed, Sony is selling Overwatch... Read more...
It seems as though console makers are coming out with new and updated systems at a somewhat furious pace these days—Sony recently released its PlayStation 4 Pro, Microsoft added an Xbox One S to its lineup and is readying Project Scorpio, and Nintendo has put the Wii U in the rear view mirror with its hybrid Switch system. As all of this is taking place, Sony has decided to officially end production of its PlayStation 3 system. The PS3 had one heck of a good run up to this point. It launched more than a decade ago in November 2006, though if you head over to the official PlayStation website, you'll see that Sony has marked the latest PS3 model (CECH-4300) as "shipment complete," which means that... Sorry PlayStation 3 owners, your console is among the many devices that PlayStation Now will cease supporting this summer. The same goes for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV, along with all 2013, 2014, and 2015 Sony Bravia TV models. All Sony Blu-ray player models and all Samsung TVs are affected as well. The only platforms that PlayStation Now will continue to support after the bloodbath are PlayStation 4 consoles and Windows PCs. PlayStation Now is a subscription service that gives members unlimited streaming access to over 450 PS3 games. It supports a bevy of devices (for now) and added Windows PCs to the fray around six months ago. But come August 15, 2017, all that changes. 2016 model... Read more...
It's been a pretty interesting year for Destiny so far, for better or for worse. The year kicked off in a rather interesting way when Bungie's president Harold Ryan stepped down, being replaced by Pete Parsons, the company's former COO. The move caused a bit of concern among those in the Destiny community, but when the mammoth April update got pushed out, with its revamped Prison of Elders mode, increased Light Level, and the introduction of new items, it helped smooth over some concerns and gave the impression that things would be alright. Thankfully, nothing has changed since then. The future of Destiny looks bright, and its upcoming Rise of Iron expansion looks to be the biggest update to... Read more...
There will be no Mortal Kombat X for either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 console, not now, not ever. Unfortunately for fans of the franchise rocking one of those last generation game consoles, porting a version over has proved too difficult a task for the developers, so WB Games pulled the plug. "After months of development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has come to the regrettable conclusion that we cannot release Mortal Kombat X for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Please know our teams worked diligently to meet the quality standards set by the current-gen versions of the game. We were not able to get the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to the quality expected of a Mortal Kombat game and are... Read more...
Sony is expanding its PlayStation Vue service to the Dallas-Fort Worth and Miami-Fort Lauderdale areas, the company announced. If you're scratching your head wondering what in the flip PlayStation Vue is, don't feel bad -- it's a relatively new offering that's only available in select areas, and one that hasn't seen any kind of heavy marketing efforts.PlayStation Vue is a streaming web TV service for cord cutters (it doesn't require a cable or satellite TV subscription) available through PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 consoles. Sony launched the service earlier this year, though unlike Sling TV, which is available all over the place in the U.S., PlayStation Vue plans are only available in a... Read more...
Father's Day is just around the corner, and if pops is a gamer, Best Buy has an offer that you might find is too good to refuse. It involves wiping the dust off your PlayStation 3 Slim or Xbox 360 250GB console, grabbing the power cable, and making sure it fires up. If so, you can trade in either of those consoles and receive $175 towards an Xbox One console. That slashes the price of an Xbox One in half, provided you're opting for a 500GB model. For example, Best Buy currently sells a special white edition of the Xbox One with 500GB hard drive and Halo: The Master Chief Collection bundled in for $350. Or for $50 more, you can bump up to a 1TB Xbox One that also comes with... Read more...
Sony is all about pushing as many PlayStation 4 consoles into homes as it can, but at the same time, it hasn't forgotten about owners of the previous generation PlayStation 3 system. Beginning May 12 (next Tuesday), Sony's cloud-based PlayStation Now service will be available on the older console with a free 7-day trial for new subscribers. PlayStation Now gives gamers access to a growing library of more than 100 PS3 games, which was previously made available to PS4 owners, along with select Sony-brand Blu-ray players and TVs. The service lets you rent most games -- prices vary by title, starting at as low as $1.99 for a few hours. Full week rentals typically run about a buck per day, and there... Read more...
Here's a bit of good news if, for whatever reason, you're hoping to use your PlayStation 4 (PS4) controller wirelessly with your PlayStation 3 (PS3) console. Courtesy of a recent firmware update Sony rolled out, it's now possible to pair the new controller with the previous generation game system using Bluetooth technology. The functionality became public knowledge from a Reddit forum thread discussing the topic. Since it's through Bluetooth, you need to head into your PS3's Settings menu and have it search for devices. Here are the steps: Go to "Accessory Settings" and select "Manage Bluetooth Devices" Select "Register New Device" and start scanning Press and hold the Share and PlayStation buttons... Read more...
When Sony bought the Gaikai streaming service and announced it was building custom PlayStation 3 boards to drop into servers for its PlayStation Now game service, a lot of folks got excited by the potential. This type of service delivery could mark the future of gaming, make backwards compatibility a non-issue, and in the long run, completely transform the console business.  Over the long run, a game console might function more as a media and control hub than a standalone rendering machine -- and Sony seemed to have their finger on the idea much more firmly than Microsoft, which was off chasing Kinect and offering vague statements about cloud rendering. Unfortunately, this is Sony we're... Read more...
Calling all PlayStation 3 owners, if you're wiling to "ditch" your PS3, Microsoft will give you $100 of store credit for it at the Microsoft Store, which you can then apply towards the purchase of an Xbox One console. The promotion effectively eliminates the price difference between a PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One and could help tilt gamers who are on the fence in Microsoft's favor. Microsoft's trade-in offer is available at select Microsoft Stores in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico) and Canada; it's not valid online. In addition to accepting PS3 consoles, Microsoft's promotion also includes Xbox 360 S and Xbox 360 E, the latter of which is a semi-recent redesign to make the last generation... Read more...
Here's a PSA to PlayStation 3 parents -- keep your gamer children hydrated and fed, and force them to get a bit of exercise and sleep every once in awhile. This will be super important advice come December 18 (this Wednesday) because that's when the highly addictive indie building game known as Minecraft will land on the PS3. Owen Hill from Mojang made the announcement on Sony's PlayStation Europe blog, adding that over 30 million copies of Minecraft have been sold to date. Expect that number to skyrocket once the PS3 Edition arrives, followed by Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition and Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition, both of which are currently being developed but are not yet scheduled for... Bungie's Destiny is a new FPS/RPG hybrid set in the distant future, in the aftermath of an apocalyptic series of events that reshaped human civilization and destroyed an empire that spanned the solar system. The company has kept much of its development under wraps, sketching out tidbits of information on the various character classes and enemies, but generally keeping everything close to the chest. Now, the company has released new gameplay footage -- and declared that PS4 and PS3 owners will be the first to beta test the title. Bungie has previously said that Destiny will be a living world, meaning that events will be able to occur across the game that aren't necessarily precipitated by the... Read more...
With just over a week to go before Sony officially joins the next generation console wars, the hardware company announced that it has sold 80 million PlayStation 3 systems, while making sure to point out that it took 7 years to do it. That's a bit of a jab at Microsoft, which recently announced reaching the 80 million units sold milestone for its Xbox 360, though Microsoft's console debuted a year earlier than the PS3. Sony isn't likely to catch up to the Xbox 360 in console sales before the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One come out, but it's been such a close race, you might as well call it a tie. Meanwhile, both companies trail Nintendo and the original Wii console, which has seen 100 million unit... Read more...
It might have been released over two-years-ago, and is said to be the final game in the current series, but this weekend, Capcom announced that there's still more love coming to Super Street Fighter IV. The announcement took place at the ongoing Evolution Championship Series tournament in Las Vegas, where gamers have been strutting their stuff in Street Fighter X Tekken, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Mortal Kombat and Persona 4 Arena. Not surprisingly, the upcoming DLC will rebalance much of the roster (full details can be found at the article linked-to below). In addition, six stages are being added, and five characters: Elena, Rolento, Poison, Hugo and... a completely brand-new yet-to-be-unveiled... Read more...
Sony last week issued and then quickly pulled a firmware update for the PlayStation 3 after a flurry of complaints surfacing claiming the new software was bricking their consoles. Oops! Making good on its promise to investigate the issue and come up with a fix, Sony announced another firmware update to both repair the bricked consoles and introduce upgrades that were supposed to be sent out via last week's firmware. If you tried installing last week's firmware (version 4.45) and can no longer see the XMB (XrossMediaBar) menu, Sony says you must perform the update to version 4.46 by starting the system in safe mode. Sony set up a page with detailed instructions on how to do that. For everyone... Read more...
Woe is the PlayStation 3 gamer who jumped at the chance to install Sony's newest firmware update, version 4.45. After it was made available, it didn't take long for complaints to surface on Twitter, Reddit, and Sony's own support forum lamenting the fact that the update was bricking consoles, turning their gaming boxes into very expensive paperweights. Sony has since rolled back the firmware to the previous version (4.41) released in April as it looks into what went wrong. "Hi guys, we're aware of reports that the recent PS3 update (4.45) has caused. We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating," Sony's PlayStation Europe division said in a statement on Twitter. Sony's made similar... Read more...
Grab your racing gloves and get ready for the newest installment of Sony's popular Gran Turismo series, the best-selling franchise across all PlayStation consoles. Sony announced that Gran Turismo 6 will skid into view this holiday season for the PlayStation 3, though curiously missing is an explicit confirmation that it will also be available for the PS4, which is also do out by the end of the year. PS3 gamers will be treated to new tracks and cars, along with a revised user interface. According to Sony, it will be a "compact" title with downloadable content (DLC) to follow. "It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo," explained Kazunori Yamauchi, during... Read more...
For Netflix users, there's hardly a better way to stream content than on Microsoft's Xbox 360. The user interface is fluid, and the console itself is plenty powerful to churn through the HD streams. But Sony's PlayStation 3 offers a similarly excellent experience -- one that's getting better as of today. Netflix admits that the PS3 is one of the "most popular ways" that its users consume TV and movies. With the new Player for PS3 update, you'll notice an updated design that is more consistent with the Netflix player on the Web as well as the company's mobile and tablet applications. The key feature in this update is the ability to easily manage your audio and subtitles selections. You can now... Read more...
Were you aware that game consoles are banned in China? Due to fears that these devices could harm the physical and mental development of children, seven Chinese ministries decided to ban the manufacture, sale, and import of game consoles a little over a decade ago. Now authorities in Beijing are starting to rethink things. Citing an anonymous government source, China Daily reports that China is warming to the idea of lifting the ban on game consoles, which would open up a potentially massive market for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo to tap into. "We are reviewing the policy and have conducted some surveys and held discussions with other ministries on the possibility of opening up the game console... Read more...
Prince Harry of Wales is a pretty good shooter, both in real-life and when playing video games. In fact, he credits his time playing games on an Xbox and PlayStation with making him a better shooter, and maybe even a better pilot. The 28-year-old spoke candidly about his tour of duty, flying Apache helicopters, and even killing. When asked if he had ever killed anyone from the cockpit of his aircraft, he was very straightforward in his response. "Yeah, so lots of people have. The squadron's been out here. Everyone's fired a certain amount," Prince Harry said. He added, "Take a life to save a life." Prince Harry is the co-pilot of an Apache helicopter, and apparently he's a pretty good one. That's...
