Sony Sunsets PlayStation Now Support For PS Vita, PS3 And PlayStation TV
Sorry PlayStation 3 owners, your console is among the many devices that PlayStation Now will cease supporting this summer. The same goes for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV, along with all 2013, 2014, and 2015 Sony Bravia TV models. All Sony Blu-ray player models and all Samsung TVs are affected as well. The only platforms that PlayStation Now will continue to support after the bloodbath are PlayStation 4 consoles and Windows PCs.
PlayStation Now is a subscription service that gives members unlimited streaming access to over 450 PS3 games. It supports a bevy of devices (for now) and added Windows PCs to the fray around six months ago. But come August 15, 2017, all that changes. 2016 model Sony Bravia TVs will be able to hold on a little while longer, with support slated to end on April 1, 2017 (no fooling).
"After thoughtful consideration, we decided to shift our focus and resources to PS4 and Windows PC to further develop and improve the user experience on these two devices. This move puts us in the best position to grow the service even further," Sony explained in a blog post. "If you use any of the above devices, we want to give our heartfelt thanks for your support, and we hope you’ll continue with us."
The good news here is that all of PS Now cloud game saves will be accessible on PS4 and Windows PCs, no matter which platform they were saved from. So if you toiled away for hours on a particular game using a device that will no longer be supported after August 15, you'll still be able to pick up where you left off if you make the leap to a PS4 console or Windows system.
For those who don't want to renew their subscriptions in light of this news, Sony says to make sure you disable auto-renewal in your account settings so that your subscription ends by April 1, 2017 on 2016 Sony Bravia TVs, and August 15, 2017 on all other devices.
