ATi Mobility Radeon 9800 - Benchmarked

Benchmarks and Comparisons With Doom 3 - Multi-Player
Now, we wait for HL2....

Doom 3
The first round of Doom 3 timedemos focused on single-player performance.  Now we'll run a round of multi-player tests and see how things unfold.  These tests were taken with our custom "HH_Frag2" demo, which is a recording of a 5 player on-line match in the "Frag Chamber" map. We also ran these benchmarks with Doom 3 set to its "High-Quality" mode, at resolutions of 1024x768 and 1600x1200 without AA or Aniso Filtering enabled and then with 4X AA and 8X Anisotropic filtering enabled.

The multi-player Doom 3 performance results mirror what we saw with our single-player demo. Once again, the Mobility Radeon 9800 couldn't quite keep up with the Radeon 9800 Pro, but we were all expecting that by now, right?  We should reiterate, however, that the Mobility Radeon 9800's performance will likely increase in significantly in this game when updated drivers are released. Still, looking at the relatively high framerates the Mobility Radeon 9800 was able to attain throughout our testing, potential gaming laptop buyers should be pleased.

Marco's interest in computing and technology dates all the way back to his early childhood. Even before being exposed to the Commodore P.E.T. and later the Commodore 64 in the early ‘80s, he was interested in electricity and electronics, and he still has the modded AFX cars and shop-worn soldering irons to prove it. Once he got his hands on his own Commodore 64, however, computing became Marco's passion. Throughout his academic and professional lives, Marco has worked with virtually every major platform from the TRS-80 and Amiga, to today's high end, multi-core servers. Over the years, he has worked in many fields related to technology and computing, including system design, assembly and sales, professional quality assurance testing, and technical writing. In addition to being the Managing Editor here at HotHardware for close to 15 years, Marco is also a freelance writer whose work has been published in a number of PC and technology related print publications and he is a regular fixture on HotHardware’s own Two and a Half Geeks webcast. - Contact: marco(at)hothardware(dot)com
