ORIGIN PC EVO17-S Laptop Review: Powerful, Thin GeForce RTX-Powered Gaming

Origin PC EVO17-S Review: A Thin and Kind-Of Light Gaming Powerhouse

The EVO series is a member of Origin's thin-and-light family of gaming laptops. The words "thin-and-light" aren't often used when describing powerful gaming laptops, but considering Origin PC has managed to squeeze both an Intel 9th generation 6-core processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX series GPU into the EVO17-S, a machine that is less than an inch thick, the moniker fits. However, at about 6.6lbs the machine isn't exactly light either, though we digress...

The Intel Core i7-9750H inside this gaming laptop is a high-end mobile processor that’s based on the Coffee Lake architecture (2019 refresh, CFL-HR). The processor clocks in between 2.6GHz and 4.5GHz and can execute up to twelve threads simultaneously. It also comes with a hefty 12MB of L3 cache, but still manages to fit into the same 45W power envelope as its predecessor. So, in the end what you get is a processor with the same core count as the 8th gen Core i7-8750H, but with higher boost clocks and more L3 cache. The big question at the end of the day is how much, if any, performance increase will we see with a larger cache and a slightly faster clock speed? That's part of what we hope to discover for you on the pages ahead.

Alienware m15 gaming laptop review

The specific laptop we’re going to be examining here is the Origin EVO17-S. While this is our first review of the EVO17-S, we are very familiar with the EVO series in general. Late last year (2018) we were sent the Origin EVO15-S, which had similar configurable hardware, but rocked a smaller 15.6” display. Of course, Intel hadn’t released their 9th gen chips at that point, so we are excited to see if they offer any observable difference in performance with this latest iteration of the system.

The Origin EVO17-S is a gaming laptop, so we would be remiss if we didn’t talk about its graphics horsepower. In total there are three graphics options to choose from; the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, RTX 2070 Max-Q and the RTX 2080 Max-Q. All of which will play most modern games will smooth framerates at this machine's native 1920x1080 panel resolution. Our sample came with the GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q. All the optional GPUs are based on the NVIDIA Turing architecture, but the RTX 2080 Max-Q comes stocked with 2,944 shaders and 8 GB GDDR6 memory connected by a 256-bit interface (12 GHz), making it the burliest option of the bunch and ideally suited to this machine's 144Hz panel.

The internal hardware isn’t the only part of the EVO17-S that can be configured. The external color and artwork can also be changed to add some flair or personalization. The options range from $50 USD to $175 USD depending on what image you'd want and the printing process used. A custom laser etching will run you $50, for example, while a custom print (like the Cyberpunk 2077 image used on this machine) will cost $150. There are plenty of colors and prints to chose from as well, or you can upload your own custom artwork.

The Origin EVO17-S has a lot to offer and a multitude of customization options -- so many that we could fill multiple pages. However, we're going to stop here and move on. Origin bills the EVO17-S as a thin and light gaming laptop. When closed, the laptop stands at just under an inch tall and it houses a 17.3-inch display in what is essentially a 16-inch clamshell form factor. Considering the powerful hardware inside, we are intrigued to see how it performs, so lets take a quick tour of the design and software and then jump into some benchmarks...
