Ever since playing Joust on his family's Atari 800XL 8-bit computer as a youth, Zak has been hooked on PC and console games. His passion for gaming as a kid led to an interest in PCs as a teenager, which ended up with him founding his own PC repair shop in the year 2000. Decades later, he's still building, still gaming, and still arguing on the internet with any opinion anyone has. A former writer of news and reviews for The Tech Report, Zak is a modern-day Renaissance man who may not be an expert on anything, but knows just a little about nearly everything.

A new study that analyzed 9,855 American children first at ages 9-10, and then again two years later, has unusually taken great pains to account for both genetic differences in intelligence as well as the effects of socioeconomic status. Wealthier people are typically healthier and more educated, which leads them to... Read more...

One of the things that makes a performance test a good "benchmark" is repeatability, both in terms of "getting similar results every time" and also how easy it is to repeat the benchmark. For example, there are some games that simply aren't suited to being used as benchmarks, either because they aren't consistent, or... Read more...
It isn't every day that a major chipmaker launches a whole new class of product. Intel arguably did this with its "Lunar Lake" processors, the first consumer x86 chips with on-package memory. AMD's now set to do it too, but instead of on-package memory, the company is launching an absolutely massive "APU." AMD... Read more...
Typically, graphics cards use PCI Express x16 slots. That's a PCIe slot configured with sixteen individual data lanes. These data lanes are physical connections, and that's why an "x16" slot is so long. There's nothing mandating that GPUs have to use x16 slots, though; many GPUs in the past have used x8 or even x4... You may recall that, just last Thursday, we cast a dubious eye toward the story reporting that Intel's 18A process yields were on the order of 10%. The numbers simply didn't add up; Intel had already reported a defect rate of less than 0.4 defects per square centimeter. As we said back in September, those are quite... Read more...
Historically speaking, even when it wasn't the absolute fastest option, Intel has always been 'competitive' with longtime rival AMD in terms of CPU gaming performance. That is actually still the case for the company's 14th-generation Core processors, but its latest desktop CPUs, the Core Ultra 200 series, can... Read more...
If you read that headline and thought "okay, what's the catch," we'll spoil it for you: the "catch" is that the battery can only provide a very small amount of power, on the order of milliwatts. It's still very exciting, though, because the new diamond battery technology can provide this power for, without... Read more...
Let's talk about Intel's process woes, folks. Intel basically got where it is now by having the combination of bleeding-edge processor designs and also a world-beating in-house foundry. However, the company stumbled when its first-generation processors on its 14nm process were six months late. Then came troubles with... Read more...
Well that's a new one, isn't it? You don't normally hear about tech products being ahead of schedule. That's apparently the case for NVIDIA's Rubin GPU architecture, though, which the GPU giant previously stated would launch in 2026 alongside updated Vera CPUs. It may not turn out that way if a new report from... Read more...
Let's get right to the point with this one: AMD's SVP & GM of Computing & Graphics, Jack Huynh, tweeted yesterday that AMD will be holding a press event on Monday, January 6th next year. This is interesting, both because we largely know what AMD is going to show at the event, and also because it's a "media event" and... Read more...
Let's talk about super-portable gaming PCs. Yeah, alright—it's another handheld post; we just got tired of writing "handheld." But seriously, these things are cool, and if you haven't had the chance to put your hands on one, you should really try it out. It's hard to fathom, if you're of a certain age: a full-on... This year has brought some pretty darn decent deals on potent new PCs and powerful parts. We hope you aren't planning to hook up that new thousand-dollar graphics card to your terrible ten-year-old 1080p monitor, though. There's nothing wrong with an FHD screen, but display technology has come a long way even since... Read more...

MSI's maiden Claw handheld was competent, but likely less compelling to cautious consumers when confronted by AMD-powered competitors boasting beefier performance and better battery life. That largely mirrors the reality of comparing Intel's Meteor Lake against AMD's Phoenix in gaming laptops. What about Lunar Lake... Read more...
We've already reported on the idea that Rockstar's next magnum opus will feature cutting-edge graphics, but we didn't have many details at that time.
