Spotify Urges Users To Reset Login Info In Wake Of Breach

There are data breaches and then there are data breaches. The Target breach, for example, was (and continues to be) a total disaster for the company with millions affected. Other hacks are made better or worse by a given company’s attitude and response.

Spotify has apparently experienced some sort of breach of its own, but if you’re going to get hacked, this is a best case scenario. A total of one user has been affected according to a post by Spotify CTO Oskar Stål, but even so, the company is hitting the big red button just to be safe.


“We’ve become aware of some unauthorized access to our systems and internal company data and we wanted to let you know the steps we’re taking in response. As soon as we were aware of this issue we immediately launched an investigation,” wrote Stål.

The lone affected user’s password and financial information were not accessed, and there is no apparent increased risk to any other users at this time.

Still, Spotify will be contacting some users about resetting usernames and passwords this week. “As an extra safety step, we are going to guide Android app users to upgrade over the next few days. If Spotify prompts you for an upgrade, please follow the instructions,” added Stål. Note that when you update, you’ll have to re-download your offline playlists.

Spotify’s reaction to this breach may be much ado about nothing, but we’ll give the company brownie points for taking any threat seriously.
