Tell me if you've heard this one before -- Apple is developing its own Mac processors in an effort to bring more hardware design in-house and to avoid Intel's oft-delayed product roadmaps. That rumor is once again making the rounds, and this time it's coming from Intel employees. A new report from Axios is suggests that Intel officials have privately confirmed to it that Apple will begin making the shift to its own ARM processors starting in 2020. Intel has a lot to lose if/when Apple begins shifting from Core and Xeon processors to its own designs, as Apple is one of its biggest customers. Raspberry Pi developer boards have proven to be very popular with folks looking to build a project that needs a power-efficient and modest performing single-board PC. Raspberry Pi unveiled its Raspberry Pi Model 3 A+ last month for $25. The success of Raspberry Pi has spawned similarly designed products from a number of competitors looking to cash in. The Raspberry Pi developer board has been around for a long time and one of the best things about it has always been its low price. The last new major model that we talked about was in March when the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ turned up featuring a 1.4GHz processor, integrated WiFi, and Gigabit Ethernet port onboard selling for $35. It seems as though every few months we hear of a new report claiming that Apple is close to releasing Macs powered by its own homegrown ARM processors. The rumor frequently pops up because the popular opinion is that Apple is tired of being beholden to Intel's processor roadmaps and relatively slow progression in performance over the years. ARM is teaming up with Samsung's foundry to design and manufacturer the recently announced Cortex-A76 core on a 7-nanometer low power plus (LPP) processor. Sometime down the line, they will extend this collaboration to 5nm low power early (LPE). This collaborating is expected to enable processing speeds in excess of 3GHz for the next-generation of mobile devices. Among the many market segments that Samsung competes in, the company builds its own custom processors based on ARM's architectural designs. You know these as "Exynos" chips and they are often found in the international versions of Samsung's flagship smartphones. Mobile chip designer ARM today announced a brand new Mali Multimedia Suite of video, display, and graphics processors for mid-range and entry level mobile devices, and also the digital television (DTV) market, a category that is demanding more graphics performance these days. The new graphics architectures integrate seamlessly with ARM's existing Cortex CPUs to enable 3D gaming, mixed reality, and 4K experiences on a range of devices. Apple is allegedly far along in development on a trio of upcoming Mac computers that will feature custom ARM co-processors. These new ARM chips will work in conjunction with the Intel processors that already power the machines according to the new report, and these Macs will include two new MacBook models along with an unnamed desktop (presumably the iMac). If you've been following the tech or security news for the past few days, then you no doubt know of a security vulnerability that reportedly affects all Intel processors. OS vendors have been working to mitigate the issue with kernel patches, but those software Band-Aids can come with some performance handicaps as a side effect. Yesterday, Qualcomm announced that its Centriq 2400 Series processors are now shipping to its customers, nearly a year after it began sampling the chips. Available in 40-, 46- and 48-core versions, the Qualcomm is positioning Centriq 2400 as a worthy competitor to Intel's Xeon processors in the data center server market. Up until this point, Qualcomm has contended that the 48-core Centriq 2460 offers a 4x improvement in performance-per-dollars versus the Intel Xeon Platinum 8180. Today, Qualcomm officially announced that it has begun shipping its Centriq 2400 server processors to its OEM partners. This marks a big step for Qualcomm, which is no stranger to the mobile market with its Snapdragon processors, but is a lesser known quantity in the server market. Intel's Xeon processors have already seen a credible challenge in the form of AMD's Zen-based EPYC family, and Centriq promises to be a low-power, high-density alternative that can run with the big dogs in the cloud infrastructure market. There's no question that our connected devices are increasingly coming under attack, as we witnessed with the Mirai botnet that made the rounds late last year. In an effort to shore up the defenses of these IoT devices, ARM is pushing forwards with what it calls its Platform Security Architecture (PSA). ARM has developed a new generation of mobile chips that will empower smartphones and tablets of tomorrow with machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities, along with claimed significant increases in power efficiency and performance. With all the attention surrounding Windows 10 S right now, it’s easy to forget that Microsoft has another variant of Windows 10 arriving later this year.
