915P Chipset Roundup: ABIT AG8, ASUS P5GD2 Premium, and Foxconn 915A01-P

SiSoft Sandra Quick Take Performance

We began our testing with SiSoftware's SANDRA, the System ANalyzer, Diagnostic and Reporting Assistant. SANDRA consists of a set of information and diagnostic utilities that can provide a host of useful information about your hardware and operating system. We ran three of the built-in subsystem tests that comprise the SANDRA 2004 suite (CPU, Multimedia, and Memory). We ran all of these tests with the ASUS P5GD2 Premium, ABIT AG8, and Foxconn 915A01-P set to 3.4GHz on our 90nm P4. The ASUS and Foxconn boards ran DDR2-533 speeds, while the ABIT board employed DDR400.

The ASUS board, with all of its optimized timings between the processor and memory, manages to deliver in excess of 5.1GB per second, while the Foxconn board leverages its DDR2 memory to surpass 4.9GB per second. Meanwhile, ABIT's AG8 peaks at just over 4.6GB per second running DDR400 memory speeds. The ABIT and ASUS boards perform similarly in the arithmetic test, while the Foxconn 915A01-P turns in surprisingly low results that proved to be consistent. Again, in the multimedia test, Foxconn's board lags slightly for some reason. ASUS and ABIT's products perform neck and neck, with the ASUS board taking the narrow lead.
