Apple and Qualcomm are locked in an extended legal battle right now that has seen the latter party attempt to block production and sales of the iPhone in China. Rumors had swirled that in response, Apple was looking to shed Qualcomm hardware from its phones. People claiming to be familiar with Apple’s plans are now saying that Cupertino is working on iPhones and iPads for next year that would be free of any Qualcomm hardware. The reports indicate that Apple is considering using LTE modems that are sourced from Intel and/or possibly MediaTek. Yesterday at IoT World 2015 in San Francisco Samsung debuted ARTIK, a set of new technologies centered on tiny circuit boards crammed with processing and communications components that they designed to juke developers to create and configure new Internet of Things (IoT) devices, such as personal trackers, drones, robots, security systems, and the like. According to a press release that crossed the wire today, IBM researchers have been able to develop prototype processors that function less like current CPUs and more like a human brain. The experimental chips are reportedly designed to emulate a brain’s abilities for perception, action and cognition. The so called neurosynaptic computing chips were designed to recreate the relationship between spiking neurons and synapses in biological systems, like the human brain. The chips do not contain any biological elements, however, but rather function using advanced embedded algorithms and custom silicon circuitry. During AMD's conference call last week, company CEO Dirk Meyer stated that he expected Global Foundries to announce its first customer "within 30 days." We now know that first customer will be STMicroelectronics, which is a major semiconductor player and manufacturer in its own right. Global Foundries has stated that it will partner with ST to produce products based on 40nm Low Power (LP) bulk silicon. Intel already holds a strong position in the personal computer and server market. But, like other companies, Intel wants more. Moving forward, Intel’s executives believe there’s a good potential to increase Atom's traction in adjacent markets by targeting these low-cost, energy-efficient chips at various multifunctional consumer gadgets including smartphones and other portable devices that access the Internet. “Atom is Intel's growth engine,” said Intel spokesman Bill Calder.Breaking into the smartphone market won’t be easy, however. When microprocessor manufacturers ran into increasing complications as they tried to make chips runs faster, they shifted gears, and started building more powerful processors using multiple cores. We're still at the early part of the multi-core revolution, but researchers at the University of Rochester claim that microprocessor manufacturers will eventually run into similar challenges with today's multi-core processor design because of the "limits of miniaturization." At the conclusion of their NVISION 08 visual computing conference, NVIDIA pulled together a few members of the press the reveal some very interesting news regarding SLI and Intel's upcoming X58 chipset platform for future Nehalem microarchitecture-based processors, aka Core i7.Up until this announcement, NVIDIA had only planned to support SLI on the X58 with motherboards that also featured their NF200 chip, much as they did with Skulltrail, as NVIDIA had no plans to produce chipsets for Intel's QuickPath Interconnect (QPI).  But as of now, NVIDIA will be supporting SLI natively on the X58 chipset as well, provided the motherboard goes through an NVIDIA certification process. ... Whoah there. That would be news. Santa Clara-based NVIDIA, makers of graphics processors that are near and dear to the heart of computer gamers everywhere, has been making quite a bit of news lately -- most of it bad. On the plus side, they were rumored to be working on a deal with Apple to supply a custom platform using Intel processors. But as we told you here earlier, they've also been stung by a $200 million charge to replace laptop chips that were damaged by packaging material. Now Digitimes is reporting that NVIDIA is planning to stop making chipsets altogether, and concentrate solely on their GPU business. Samsung has started spreading the word to its customers that NAND flash memory chips are going to be harder to come by for a little while as Samsung diverts much of its available supply to Apple. When Apple places an order for 50 million 8Gb NAND chips, it shouldn't be a surprise that Apple gets to cut the line and is offered a spot at the front of the queue. NAND flash memory chips are used in USB flash drives, MP3 players, cell phones, and other small-form-factor consumer electronics devices. According to Digitimes, AMD isn't going to bother releasing two 65 nanometer scale dual core chips they had in the development pipeline. AMD originally planned to launch two 65nm dual-core Phenom processors codenamed Kuma for the desktop PC market in May or June this year, however the company has recently suspended the plans and will let its Athlon X2 5600B processor cover the market until the company enters 45nm production, according to sources at motherboard makers.AMD realizes they must get down to the 45nm scale architecture to effectively compete with Intel, whose 45nm Penryns have been out for a while now. Researchers at IBM's Zurich Research Laboratory have developed a new technique that gives a whole new meaning to water cooling: Circulating water inside the chip itself. The concept is not meant for today's CPUs, but actually for the chips of tomorrow. Historically, CPU performance improvements have largely been a function of generating faster computational speeds. But higher speeds require smaller manufacturing processes and generate more heat--thus trying to eke out more MHz from CPU design advances becomes increasingly difficult and less efficient. As many of you are no doubt aware, Intel is planning to officially release a new mainstream chipset in a few weeks, the P45.  From a feature standpoint, the new P45 is somewhat similar to last year's P35.  The P45, however, will have official support for PCI Express 2.0, with a more flexible lane configuration for multi-GPU graphics, and the chipset itself is being manufactured at 65nm as opposed to 90nm.  Using the more advanced process to build the chips should result in lower power consumption and lower operating temperatures as well.  The P45 will also be paired up with a new ICH10-series southbridge, which is similar to the ICH9 sans a few legacy features. AMD has released its product roadmap for the next two years and the company appears to have gone core crazy. Plans for several multi-core chip releases over the next two years will culminate in a 12-core CPU to be released in the first half of 2010. The first new product from AMD will be code-named "Shanghai," and is expected to see the light of day in the second half of this year. This will be AMD's first 45nm sever processor, and will support HyperTransport 3.0 as well as sporting a whopping 6MB of Level-3 cache. Rumor has it that the Intel's next generation P45 chipset has hit a snag that will cause boards to ship in June instead of May.“The delay of the chipset is due to problems over compatibility between the chipset's PCI Express x16 port and graphics cards, noted the sources, adding that Intel has notified them that the problem should be solved and ready to launch 2-4 weeks behind the original launch schedule.”Despite the delay Intel and their partners are still expected to demo or at least display P-45 based boards at Computex....
