AMD made a number of platform and processor related announcements a few weeks back at the Consumer Electronics Show, but we already have some additional updates from the team to share with you today. At CES, the company revealed the upcoming A10-7890K APU, as well as its plans to move all next-gen processors to a single socket, dubbed socket AM4, and the new Wraith cooler. Intel has made a habit of launching enthusiast versions of previous generations processors after it releases it a new architecture. What that means for system builders currently in need of an upgrade, is deciding between putting together a PC around Skylake parts or waiting for Intel's inevitable Broadwell-E launch To help make that decision a bit easier, some juicy information about the Intel's next gen high-end desktop chip has been leaked to the web. When Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) introduced its Bulldozer architecture, it talked about the design being a "third-way" approach between symmetric multithreading (SMT), like Intel's Hyper Threading, and true multi-core processing where multiple discrete cores reside on a single die. Now AMD will have to defend its design and the way it was marketed because of a class-action lawsuit.The lawsuit, filed by Tom Dickey in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, alleges that AMD deceived customers by overstating the number of cores on its Bulldozer processors. Intel has refreshed its line-up of processors in a number of categories over the last few months. Late last year, Intel’s current flagship desktop processors based on Haswell-E arrived, followed shortly thereafter by the low-power Core M series for ultra-mobile devices, and then 5th Generation Core processors for notebooks and all-in-ones. We know that many manufacturers are refreshing their chromebooks soon as Intel is pushing its Bay Trail-M SoC and Intel Core i3 (Haswell) chips, and you can count Acer among those companies. Acer announced that it will have two new SKUs in its chromebook stable, both of which will run on Intel Core i3-4005U (1.7GHz) chips. It’s intriguing that a new spate of chromebooks are getting actual Core series chips--Acer won’t be the only one--but it begs a couple of questions. There’s a little mess of wires and solder that started it all--the world’s first microchip for which its creator, Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments, eventually won the Nobel Prize in physics. And although at auction, the thing stirred up bids as high as $850,000, it failed to reach the reserve bid nor hit the $1 million to $2 million range expected by auction house Christie’s. According to AMD, there are 3 billion personal computers worldwide and some 30 million servers, and they consume approximately 1% and 1.5% of all energy consumed annually. The cost for all that juice is between $14-$18 billion, and the company believes it can do better--25 times better, actually. Xiaomi announced a new, relatively inexpensive Android tablet yesterday called the MiPad, and NVIDIA has made sure to bang the drum for the new device as it has the company’s Tegra K1 SoC inside, and NVIDIA talked up Xiaomi as a company, too. “Fast. Xiaomi does everything fast,” wrote NVIDIA’s Will Park in a company blog post. “Its Tegra 4-powered Mi3 was the world’s fastest phone at launch. You have to love these financials reports; they treat every bit of data with roughly equal weight, even though there are parts that are uninteresting and parts that make you do a double-take. Case in point, buried halfway down the page on AMD’s press release about its Q1 results is the tidbit that its Graphics and Visual Solutions revenue jumped a whopping 118% year-over-year. Unsurprisingly, that’s largely due to the company’s semi-custom APUs which are found in, for example, both the Xbox One and the PS4. Intel’s first quarter earnings report shows some uneven results across the company’s market segments and vast product portfolio, with a particular drop on the mobile side. Intel’s Mobile and Communications Group had a revenue of $156 million, but that was 52% from last quarter and down 61% year-over-year. In fact, sequentially, Intel’s revenue was down in most areas: its PC Client group was down 8%; the Data Center group was down 5%; the Internet of Things group was down 10%; and software and services dropped 6%. The Internet of Things is coming, and there are increasing numbers of products designed to make the IoT reality more feasible and easier to build for. Enter The HIO Project, which offers an open hardware platform that features a tiny mainboard rocking Freescale i.MX6 ARM Cortex A9 processor technology. Intel used the backdrop of the Game Developers Conference currently taking place in San Francisco to make a handful of interesting announcements that run the gamut from low-power technologies to ultra-high-end desktop chips. AMD announced its new AM1 platform, which consists of dual- and quad-core Kabini APUs that slot into motherboards using the FS1b socket. The idea is that AM1 gives users a powerful but compact and affordable--not to mention upgradable--system. AMD has released its annual earnings report, and the news for the chipmaker is mixed but looking up. For the year, AMD saw revenue drop 2% from 2012 (from $5.42 billion to $5.3 billion), but the company had a solid fourth quarter in 2013 with $1.59 billion revenue which marked a 38% year-over-year jump from 2012. Much of that revenue came from sales of Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4. (Lest anyone forget that both of those very popular consoles run on AMD semi-custom hardware, that was a big win for the company.) Intel may seem like an unmovable juggernaut, but the company is actually in the midst of major changes. The PC industry is shifting, and the old Wintel paradigm isn’t what it used to be. The company has a new CEO in Brian Krzanich, and the new boss is tasked with captaining the turning ship; unfortunately, he’s doing so in part by cutting a lot of jobs. Intel announced that it’s cutting 5% of its workforce, which is more than 5,000 jobs. The casualties are coming as Intel realigns some of its business segments, moving more resources to focus on data center tech (which is a big cash cow for the company), more low-power processors, and tablets. Qualcomm is developing NPUs, or “neural processing units”, which would present a different and powerful way for machines to handle information by more closely mimicking the way that the human brain works. Essentially, Qualcomm and its partners are trying to artificially create neurons, and NPUs are designed for parallel processing and high efficiency. The company has apparently been successful enough in that endeavor that it’s ready to start designing and manufacturing these NPUs commercially. Although Intel is Chipzilla, the company can’t help but extend its reach just a bit into the exciting and growing world of DIY makers and hobbyists. Intel announced its Galileo development board, a microcontroller that’s compatible with Arduino software and uses the new Quark X1000 SoC processor (400MHz, 32-bit, Pentium-class, single- core and thread) that Intel announced at the IDF 2013 keynote. The board makes use of Intel’s architecture to make it easy to develop for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but it’s also completely open hardware. It appears that Intel, long an enabler of overclocking processors, wants to overclock everything, starting with SSDs. At September’s Intel Developers Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, Intel scheduled a session that covers a number of overclocking topics, including “Demonstrating overclocking SSD technology”. There’s virtually no information available as to what exactly that means, but Alan Frost, marketing communications manager for Intel told ComputerWorld that “"This is a product we're looking into but we have not released yet.
