Imitation might be the sincerest form of flattery, but that doesn't mean companies take kindly to others infringing on their intellectual property (IP) or otherwise ripping off their products. Whether Lenovo did that to Sony with its Mirage Solo VR headset, which looks strikingly similar to the PlayStation VR, is now moot. Why? Sony and Lenovo signed a two-year patent licensing agreement that renders it so. Lenovo Mirage Solo "We are pleased to announce that we have licensed the PS VR headset design to Lenovo," said Riley Russell, Chief Legal Officer at SIE. "The industrial design for PS VR has been widely acclaimed, and that was the result of years of hard work by PlayStation engineers. This... Read more...
Up until this point, VR headsets haven't exactly taken the gaming world by storm with respect to sales. Despite the masses not yet getting on the VR bandwagon, Sony has managed to sell quite a few PlayStation VR headsets around the world thanks in part of aggressive price discounts and a bold move last Christmas to allow some PS4 owners to order up a headset with games and pay for them only if they liked it. Sony has announced that globally it has now sold over 3 million PS VR units. Along with the 3 million headsets sold, Sony has also moved 21.9 million PS VR games and experiences. To celebrate the milestone Sony is announcing the launch of a pair of new PS VR games that will land this fall.... Read more...
One of the barriers to VR gaming is the cost of entry. It's generally been cheaper to dive into VR on the console side of things versus buying an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive for use with a PC, but it is still not a cheap endeavor. In an effort to bring more people into the fold, and as a natural progression of niche market seeing some maturation, Sony is the slashing the starting price of its PlayStation VR bundles to $299.99 in the United States and Europe. "This new pricing provides an even greater value for PlayStation fans at a perfect time, with must-play PS VR titles like Moss and Sprint Vector. There is also plenty to look forward to this year like Firewall Zero Hour, Rick and Morty: Virtual... Read more...

Anticipating demand is not easy. Just ask Nintendo, which grossly underestimated how many gamers would be interested in its NES Classic Edition console. And then there is Sony with its PlayStation VR. Not only did Sony have to anticipate demand for a new product, but it had to factor in how popular VR gaming would be at this early stage. It turns out that Sony was a bit conservative in its thinking as well.Andrew House, global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told The New York Times that he had doubts about the VR market catching on so quickly and being a draw in the mass market. He along with some others within Sony had advised the company to temper its expectations and to... Read more...
Virtual reality (VR) is starting to slowly take off on PC and console gaming platforms, but that also means that there is plenty of fragmentation going on as each platform looks to stake its claim on early adopters. This was especially the case during the early days of the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, when attempts to “unify” the gaming experience on the VR headsets by the hacking community were initially thwarted. However, as least one game publisher, Ubisoft, is looking to allow all gamers using the three major VR platforms to engage in online multiplayer sessions together. That means that PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift users will no longer be relegated to playing in their own minuscule... Read more...
Sony's now an official contender in the VR gaming space with its PlayStation VR, which as the name implies is a VR headset designed for the PlayStation 4 console. Naturally, the teardown specialists at iFixIt wasted no time getting their nimble fingered mitts on one for a complete deconstruction. That's to be expected, but what we didn't expect was the level of praise they showered on Sony and its headset. "The verdict: Sony just won the war. Regardless of resolution and actual games, this thing is really well-constructed, cheap, pretty accessible, and has the entire PlayStation marketplace backing it." iFixIt said. "We were able to use one screwdriver for the whole teardown and found just a... Read more...
It’s a great time to be a console gamer. There are plenty of hot titles that have recently been released or are on the horizon, Microsoft just rolled out its Xbox One S, Sony will soon be dropping the PlayStation 4 Neo, and virtual reality is coming to current generation Sony consoles via the PlayStation VR. Needless to say, the folks at Electronic Arts are delighted about these latest developments in the console market. The company is confident that it can deliver games that will not only look great on current generation hardware (like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4), but will also take advantage of the increased horsepower of mid-cycle replacement like the Xbox One S and PlayStation 4 Neo along... While PC virtual reality (VR) gaming fans have the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to play around with (priced at $600 and $800 respectively), console gamers have largely been left out of the loop. That will change on October 13th, which is when the PlayStation VR will launch in the United States for the PlayStation 4 (and likely also the PlayStation 4 Neo). Leading up to the PlayStation VR’s release, more details about the accessory are starting to leak to the internet (via a leaked PlayStation VR brochure). We’ve learned that gamers will need roughly 60 square feet of unobstructed space for the accessory to function optimally. Sony is also keen to point that you will need to remain seated while playing,... Read more...
Although Rise of the Tomb Raider started off life on the Xbox One in November, it was always intended to make its way to other platforms. It landed on the PC in January and today, we’ve learned that PlayStation 4 owners will be able to purchase the game on October 11th. The launch on the PS4 culminates with Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, which includes Rise of the Tomb Raider and new premium DLC chapters entitled “Blood Ties” and “Lara’s Nightmare.” Also on tap is co-op support for the existing “Endurance” mode and a new “Extreme Survivor” setting that not only jacks up the difficulty mode, but also removes those handy save checkpoints. “The only way to save your game is to forage... When Sony first announced its PlayStation VR headset a few months ago, the company said it would ship in the United States sometime in October with a price tag of $399. Now we have an exact release date to share—Sony updated the status of its PlayStation VR during its E3 press conference, saying it will launch to retail on October 13, 2016.Other details remain the same, including the price. That's not a bad deal compared to the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which sell for $599 and $799, respectively, and require a relatively high powered PC with at least a GeForce GTX 970 graphics card. However, the base price of the PlayStation VR only includes the headset and not the PlayStation 4 Camera, a requirement... Read more...
There are very few game titles on the horizon that are as hyped-up as No Man's Sky, an adventure survival game that takes place in a beautiful procedurally-generated world. While the game is going to be available on the PC (and will support NVIDIA Ansel, no less), the bulk of the game's hype is tied to the PlayStation community. To say that people have been excited for this game for a while would be an understatement. We do mean understatement. The NMS community is clearly passionate about the game, and so when a delay is even suggested, sorrow quickly ensues. For one game writer, merely being the first to report on it led to death threats, and general bashing all-around on NMS's various communities.... Read more...

The world of PlayStation gaming is ready to enter a new chapter. On Friday, Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment were dissolved to create a new company: Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). SIE, which is headquartered in San Mateo, California, is placing a huge emphasis on the PlayStation brand and the future of gaming. Some may see this as little more than changing the name of the company — even SIE acknowledges that “probably not a whole lot” will change at first — and perhaps some exec shuffling. However, this new transformation will allow SIE to “more quickly to meet the needs of the gaming community, innovate with digital services like PlayStation Vue and PlayStation... Read more...
