Developers are making a big deal about "next-gen gaming," in large part because the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 are about to hit. Likewise, on PC we have new graphics card launches from AMD (Radeon RX 6000 series) and NVIDIA (GeForce RTX 30 series). One of the upcoming games that will attempt to make use of next-gen GPU goodness is Godfall, and the system requirements have been revealed. Godfall is based on Unreal Engine 4 running on the DirectX 12 Ultimate API, which it means it takes advantage of cutting edge graphics technologies like real-time ray tracing and variable rate shading. The better your hardware (and especially your GPU), the better the game will look, depending on the settings... Read more...
One of the big questions on many gamers’ minds is whether their favorite games will be playable on the next generation of consoles. Game offerings and availability can be a major factor for consumers. Borderlands 3 fans will therefore be thrilled to hear that the game will be available on the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5. There is even more good news for Borderlands 3 players. The Xbox Series X and the Playstation 5 will also support 4K resolution at 60fps in single-player mode. Those who enjoy playing the game with friends will not be able to run 4K resolution at 60fps, but they have not been left out entirely. Three- and four-player split screens will be available... Microsoft recently published a preview video of the Xbox Series X’s design. The upcoming console design has garnered both praise, concern, and confusion. Microsoft's next-gen game console appears to be rather large and bears many similarities to a PC. One critic included Gearbox executive Randy Pitchford, who took to Twitter to complain about the design and performance claims of the Xbox Series X. The Xbox Series X features a design that differs from its predecessors. Phil Spencer, executive vice-president of Gaming at Microsoft, claimed that the console’s design is due to the deceleration of Moore’s law. He tweeted, “As Moore's law slows down and our ambitions increase,... Read more...
The launch of Borderlands 3 has gone well for Gearbox and player engagement is the highest that the franchise has ever seen. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has said on Twitter that on launch day Borderlands 3 had concurrent players that were about two times higher than Borderlands 2 ever saw. Concurrent peak players for the game via the Epic Game Store is estimated to be around 248,000 players. Steamcharts says that Borderlands 2 peaked at 123,496 players at its launch with a similar tracking service called SteamDB saying 124,678 players were playing at its peak. Those figures are roughly half what estimates peg for Borderlands 3. Pitchford offered no insight into how the game was doing on consoles.... Read more...
Borderlands 3 is officially here and gamers are already customizing the skill trees of their favorite Vault Hunters. The game also includes a wide variety of weapon types. Today we will dig into the pros and cons of the Borderlands 3 eight basic weapon types.  First and foremost it is important to note that players only start out with two weapon slots in Borderlands 3. Gamers will need to play through the first hour or so of the game before they can equip a third weapon. Players will leave Pandora on a spaceship and will then unlock that third slot. Players will unlock their fourth and final slot after playing through a long quest of the planet of Promethea. Most players will likely be able... Read more...
Gamers all around the world know the frustration of a video game they want landing on a crowdfunding network. Many games have reached their funding goals only to see development delays and at times the games never get made. Gearbox has put a game that Homeworld fans have been wanting to play for a decade and a half, up on a crowdfunding platform called Fig. That game is Homeworld 3 but with any luck, it the long-awaited title will be seen through to fuition. Homeworld 3 is a full sequel to the 2003 Homeworld 2 game. The games Homeworld Remastered Collection from 2015 and Homeworld Deserts of Kharak were the other games in the franchise. The developers wrote on Fig that they were a few months... Read more...

Borderlands 3 is a highly anticipated co-op shooter that is coming later this year from Gearbox. One of the most oft-requested features gamers have requested of Borderlands 3 is the inclusion of cross-play support. Cross-play has become a hot topic in the gaming industry for quite some time, and Sony -- which has been reticent to jumping in on the bandwagon -- was dragged kicking and screaming into supporting cross-play with Fortnite. Now, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford has chimed in on potential cross-play for Borderlands 3. While many were hoping that support would be available at launch, Pitchford made it abundantly clear that this will unfortunately not be the case in a tweet: Some... Read more...
The developers at Gearbox have one final update in store for Battleborn, and then no more. Randy Varnell, creative director of Battleborn at Gearbox and self-proclaimed senior nerd, made the announcement in a blog post while simultaneously apologizing to fans for the delay in pushing out what will be the last update. "As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update. Details of any future changes or news will be made on our forums or through social media, so keep your radars on," Varnell said. The announcement comes just a little over three months since Battleborn's multiplayer went to free-to-play, and around 15 months since the... Read more...
When word spread last September that Battleborn would go the free-to-play route, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford fired up his Twitter account and cast a wet blanket on the rumors, calling them "reckless" and downright "false." Well, fast forward not quite a year later and Battleborn is now free to experience, at least partially. Gearbox announced that effective immediately gamers can download a free trial of Battleborn and play unlimited competitive multiplayer. There are no time limits in the free trial, nor are there level caps to worry about. Furthermore, the trial includes access to all of the multiplayer game modes and maps, and all 30 heroes through weekly rotations of six. "Progress... Read more...
If you’re a fan of the Borderlands franchise, you’ll be happy to know that Borderlands 3 is the next game in the pipeline for developer Gearbox. After leaving development duties to 2K Australia for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, it’s definitely good news to hear that the folks who originated the series are firmly back in the driver’s seat. "We don't even know if we're going to call it [Borderlands 3]. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know," said Gearbox CEO and President Randy Pitchford while speaking at PAX East 2016 (which our fearless leader Dave Altavilla attended). Plot ideas are currently being tossed around for Borderlands 3, but what’s confirmed is that Gearbox “Chief Creative... Read more...
Ever since the release of its SHIELD Android TV device last spring, NVIDIA hasn't slowed down in its attempt to bring as many hot games to the platform as possible. While many of the top-tier game releases have been tied to the company's GeForce Now streaming service, Android-native titles do come along every once in a while. In the past, we've seen NVIDIA help usher in Half-Life 2, Portal and Trine 2 on Android. Now, it brings us Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. The Pre-Sequel is the third entry in the Borderlands series, although it's more of an "in-between" release than a sequel to Borderlands 2. It's also quite unlike that second-last... Read more...
Gearbox Software, maker of the popular Borderlands series, is back with a new title that promises some of that exciting genre-bending fun the company has made successful. In tandem with 2K, Gearbox announced a futuristic shooter called Battleborn. “If Borderlands 2 is a shooter-looter, Battleborn is a hero-shooter,” said Gearbox president Randy Pitchford in a press release. “As a genre-fused, hobby-grade, co-operative and competitive FPS exploding with eye-popping style and an imaginative universe, Battleborn is the most ambitious video game that Gearbox has ever created.” Battleborn is set up in a multiplayer battle arena where you can be any number of clever and interesting... Depending on how big a fan of the Borderlands series you are, the latest news out of Gearbox might depress or excite you. Company CEO Randy Pitchford spoke out late last week that Borderlands 3 isn't in development; instead, Gearbox is focusing on not one, but two new IPs. It should be stressed that Pitchford isn't writing-off the idea of another Borderlands game. Rather, this just isn't the time for one. He states, "We have more to do in the franchise", which makes it clear that we will see another title down the road. Ultimately, given the unbelievable success of the last game, that shouldn't strike anyone as a surprise. Fans of the series are not out of luck between now and Borderland 3's... Read more...
Do you like Borderlands 2? Do you like killing stuff in Borderlands 2? Well, if you happen to live in the US, you'll want to head on over to the special site seen at the bottom of this post to sign-up and enter Gearbox's '$100,000 Loot Hunt' contest. Taking part is simple: Beginning on October 11th, hop into Borderlands 2 and, as Claptrap states, "do what comes naturally". Each day, you'll have to meet a target in order to qualify for that day's prizes, and even if you don't manage to win a real-life prize, you will still reap the benefits of improved in-game loot. Prizes include PSP Vitas for week 1, Turtle Beach headsets for week 2, NVIDIA SHIELD + Falcon Northwest PC for week 3 (that sure... Read more...
With the release of Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, we were led to believe that Borderlands 2 would be seeing no more DLC. As it turns out, we're just not going to be seeing more DLC that introduces vast new worlds. At PAX Australia, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who just last month showed us around the Gearbox offices and his humble abode, announced that the biggest piece of upcoming DLC is called Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2, which increases the level cap by 11, adds a "Digistruct Peak Challenge", and allow gamers to "over level" the game, in order to continue getting a challenge that "Ultimate" would imply. That "over level" feature is one I'm curious about, because the Borderlands series... Read more...
As sad as it might be for Borderlands 2 fans that the fourth and final DLC is to be issued soon, it seems extremely likely that it's going to be the best one yet. Titled Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, this DLC features the one-and-only super-energetic Tina, who forces the entire crew to play a board game called "Bunkers & Badasses". The premise sounds odd, but because of its design, this DLC will offer a lot of variety. As the five-minute gameplay video below will show, you effectively play inside of Tina's boardgame, which on the surface appears totally blank. While inside, what you'll actually be playing through is her imagination - whatever she dreams up at that point in time. Given... Read more...
They say it’s not usually a good idea to see how and where the sausage is made, but Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford gave a tour of the Gearbox Studios and his own home for an NVIDIA Project SHIELD showcase video to show how all the places and people involved in creating (and playing) the company’s games. In the Gearbox offices tour, we see some the development studio, the motion capture studio, and the animation put where animators work up the eye candy, and there’s also a focus tester room where regular joes and janes off the street get to test unreleased titles for free (and receive nifty swag in return). We also get a peek into the top floor offices, which is usually the realm... Read more...
It's hard to tell if this is a semi-elaborate publicity stunt, or if it's a warning to those who decide to catch a few Zs at work. Gearbox's Steve Gibson was allegedly found sleeping on a couch by a co-worker who quickly snapped-up a photo and posted it to Twitter. As far as Gibbie is concerned, we hope that Gearbox assumes his nap was due to the long hours he was putting in. One thing the picture-snapper didn't notice (again, allegedly - I have a hard time believing this) is that in the background, a perfectly-placed poster board for Borderlands 2's forthcoming (and fourth) DLC sits behind a cage. Its name? "Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep". It's since been confirmed by Gearbox,... Read more...
The original Borderlands was a surprise smash hit, selling millions of copies more than its developer, Gearbox, ever thought it would. The first game's randomized weapon generation, unique cell-shaded graphics, steep difficulty, and excellent co-op was a potent combination -- more than enough to overcome complaints about its thin story. Borderlands 2 launched this morning, and early reviews paint it as a further improvement on its predecessor. The dark humor, crazy NPCs, and frenetic combat of the original game are faithfully replicated and the story is better; Kotaku's Tina Amini writes "The story in Borderlands 2 occasionally gets serious, dark even, and it was something I felt and believed... Brian Burke, Nvidia's rockstar PR manager who once held the same position at 3dfx (moment of silence...) and is not to be confused with the Toronto Maple Leafs' GM, is calling attention to someone who he believes is an under-appreciated gaming great who deserves to be mentioned in same breath as John Carmack (co-founder of id Software), Tim Sweeney (founder of Epic Games), Cliff Bleszinski (Unreal franchise), Gabe Newell (co-founder of Valve), Will Wright (Sims - 'nuff said), Shigeru Miyamoto (of Nintendo fame), Cevat Yerli (founder, CEO, and President of Crytek), and yes, even John Romero (renowned programmer and another co-founder of id Software). Who is Mr. Burke talking about? Randy Pitchford,... Read more...
As hard as it might be to believe, forever is nearly here. Duke Nukem Forever, the long-awaited an long-delayed sequel to Duke Nukem 3D has a launch date: May 3. Duke Nukem Forever was once the property of 3D Realms. However, that company folded in 2009, and it seemed like Duke Nuke Forever was going to be renamed Duke Nukem never. Instead, the franchise was picked up by Take-Two Interactive ("Grand Theft Auto" franchise), as the publisher, and Gearbox Software ("Brothers in Arms") as the developer. Of course, as one might have expected, those two and 3D Realms fought over who truly owned Duke Nukem. That was eventually settled, and now, with a press release being issued and pre-orders being...
