Samsung's latest flagship Android smartphones include the Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, and the Galaxy Note 9, however, sales volume for the former two devices hasn't exactly been impressive. In July Samsung reported softer profits with the finger pointed directly at lower than expected sales of its flagship devices. Samsung has now stepped up to the plate and is doubling its Galaxy Note 9, S9, and S9+ trade-in offer on eligible smartphones. Samsung's double trade-in value deal runs from October 5, 2018, through November 3, 2018, and is valid at Best Buy, AT&T, Samsung.com, and other retailers.... Read more...
Earlier this month, Samsung issued guidance for Q2 2018, indicating that revenue and profit would be down compared to the previous quarter and that profit would be up slightly for the quarter, year-over-year. Samsung blamed this guidance on soft sales of its premier Galaxy S9 family. Today, the company released its official results for Q2, and they're right in line with the earlier guidance. Consolidated revenue for the quarter came in at KRW 58.48 trillion ($52.3 billion), which represented a 4 percent drop compared to the same period last year. However, operating profit rose by 6 percent... Read more...
Samsung is just weeks away from launching its Galaxy Note 9 smartphone, which will serve as the company's ultimate flagship for 2018. However, could this be the end of the line for the long-running Galaxy Note series? It's possible according to a new report coming out of South Korea. As we all know, the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note families have been increasingly meeting parity with regards to features. And when looking at the Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 (and the Galaxy S9+ compared to the incoming Galaxy Note 9), there is very little to distinguish the two other than the inclusion of the... Samsung never misses an opportunity to throw some shade at Apple, its main rival in the mobile sector. There is no love lost between these two tech giants, and if anyone needs reminding of that, just check out Samsung's latest advertisement poking fun at the iPhone X. This time it's not over the infamous notch, however, but the phone's download speeds. The ad begins by spoofing the Genius Bar. It's titled "Ingenius: Speed" and it features what is supposed to be an Apple Store employee. A customer walks in, who the employee instantly recognizes as Rosie (from previous ads), and asks about the iPhone... Read more...
A man from Odessa, Florida claims that his girlfriend's Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphone started smoking and caught fire. Dave Warden III says the pair were wrapping up dinner when he noticed the Galaxy S9 starting to smoke on the kitchen counter.  "There was popping, cracking, tingling," said Warden. He says soon after the smoke started 12-inch flames began to spew out of the smartphone. He attempted to pick up the phone and throw it into the sink but missed the sink tossing the phone onto the floor instead. The man claims that his hands were burned while trying to move the phone. "It... Read more...
Shares of Samsung are down more than 2 percent today after the South Korean electronics posted its earnings guidance for the second quarter of 2018. The disappointing numbers suggest that Samsung's flagship handsets, including the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, are struggling to maintain strong sales momentum amid increased competition in the marketplace. Samsung reported that sales for the second quarter fell to 58 trillion won (~$52 billion), compared with 60.56 trillion won (~$54.3 billion) in the previous quarter, and 61 trillion won (~$54.6 billion) in the same quarter a year ago. The company also... Read more...
If you own one of Samsung's Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus smartphones a wild bug making the rounds is leaving customers on edge. Reports indicate that some users have seen the default messaging app randomly send photos from their gallery to contacts without their knowledge. One impacted user claims that the Samsung device sent the entire photo gallery to their girlfriend. Another user from reddit reported that the device had sent photos to his wife. The photos are being sent out over the stock Samsung messaging app. The particularly odd thing about this bug is that there is no record that the photos... Read more...
There's no question that Samsung's Galaxy series are among the most popular Android smartphones on the planet. The newest entries into the family -- the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ -- launched earlier the year and were most recently embiggened with larger storage capacities. Now, Samsung is adding a new color to the mix for those that haven't yet upgraded their smartphone: Sunrise Gold. Sunrise Gold joins the existing range of colors that include Lilac Purple, Coral Blue and Midnight Black. The gold-tinged Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will still have an all-black front like the other colors offered. ... Read more...
Apple has been involved in a few controversies over the past six months, most recently with butterfly keyboard failures on the MacBook Pro. However, prior to that, the company came under fire for the peculiar display notch on the iPhone X and performance throttling due to “well-seasoned” batteries on older iPhones. Samsung has of course been taking notice of what’s going on in the world of iPhones and has followed up with a new commercial that trolls Apple. The commercial follows the travails of a woman as she navigates through a busy airport, only to be literally slowed... Read more...
Samsung is known to shake things up with special color options for its high-end smartphones, sometimes offering them exclusively through Best Buy. To keep the trend going, Samsung is rolling out Sunrise Gold and Burgundy Red versions of its Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. There's good news and bad news there, though. The good news is both color options look snazzy, but the bad news is neither one will be available in the United States right off the bat. At least initially, the Burgundy Red edition will only be available in Korea and China starting sometime this month. Samsung will then launch the Sunrise... Read more...
Do you think you have a strong eye for photography? OnePlus aims to put that to the test as part of a clever (and fun) marketing strategy to promote the upcoming launch of its next flagship phone, the OnePlus 6. The company has assembled a collection of photographs taken with the OnePlus 6, iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9, and Pixel 2, and is asking users to vote on the best one in each category. What makes the challenge so interesting is that the photos are not labeled—there is no indication of which photo was taken with which phone. There is no identifying information in the metadata either,... Read more...
If you're a Verizon Wireless customer looking to purchase a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ in the near future, we've got some bad news for you. America's largest wireless carrier has just signed deal with Samsung that will see Verizon’s Oath subsidiary install bloatware across devices that are Bixby-enabled.  We don't know of many (or rather, any) people that enjoy having their mobile devices preloaded with unnecessary apps, but Verizon sees this as another way to drive revenue from customers that are increasingly turning away from traditional ways to view content. In this case,... Read more...
If 64GB of internal storage isn't enough for you (even though the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus offer micoSDXC slots for expansion), then Samsung has new storage options for you to choose from on its flagship Android Oreo smartphones. The company just announced that it will begin selling both 128GB and 256GB variants of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ starting on May 1st. The standard Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ with 64GB of internal storage cost $719.99 and $839.99 respectively direct from Samsung. Opting for the 128GB variant will up those prices to $769.99 and $889.99 respectively. The range-topping 256GB SKU will... Read more...
Samsung, don't give in!! We've seen a number of manufacturers embrace the "display notch" when it comes to the 2018 refresh of flagship smartphones. Up until this point, Samsung has stayed the course, delivering the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+with traditional Infinity Displays. However, a newly uncovered design patent shows that Samsung could be pulled to the Dark Side with future Galaxy smartphones. The images in the design patent show a device with minimal display bezels and a notched display at the top that houses the selfie camera, speaker and various other sensors. Out back, we...
