There’s no question that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ were a big sales disappointment for Samsung. The smartphones launched around this time last year and right out of the gate, sales were lagging behind its predecessors, with at least one report suggesting that Galaxy S9 sales were the lowest of any Galaxy flagship since the 2012-era Galaxy S3. Fortunately for Samsung, it looks as though last year’s sales slide won’t carry over to 2019. That news comes courtesy of notorious leaker Ice Universe, who claims that during its 24-hour presales period in China, the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ doubled the presale performance of their Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+... Android 9 Pie was first released to the public on August 6th 2018, and was quickly made available for production devices including Google's own Pixel smartphones and OnePlus devices. However, the largest smartphone OEM in the world has been extremely slow with its public rollout of the major OS update. One would think that unlocked versions of Samsung devices would be among the first to receive Android 9 Pie, as they don't have carrier bloatware attached, but that just hasn't been the case for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Carrier-locked models (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, U.S. Cellular) began receiving the OS update earlier this month, and the update for unlocked... Read more...
All eyes may be pointing towards Samsung's Galaxy S10 family of smartphones that will launch next week, but that also means that there are some excellent deals to be had on the current Galaxy S9 family. Today, we've got a smokin' hot deal on the current flagship Galaxy S9+ by way of eBay. eBay seller never-msrp has listed the international version of the Galaxy S9+ complete with dual SIM slots, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage for just $549.99. The smartphone also comes factory unlocked, meaning that it should work with just about any carrier around the globe (although you will need to pay attention to the supported carrier bands to make sure that you'll be able to... Back in May of 2018, we talked a bit about the Visible pre-paid cellular service that is backed by Verizon. It's been a while since we have heard anything about Visible, which first launched with exclusive support for iPhones. Now, Visible has announced that it is extending support to Android devices, starting with the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. For $40 monthly paid up front, you'll get unlimited text, calls, and data. Right now, those are the only two Android phones that are supported by Visible, unfortunately. You can either bring your own unlocked Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ over to the prepaid service, or you can purchase a device direct from Visible. You can finance the phones at... Read more...
Samsung is offering up a holiday treat for Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ owners. The South Korean electronics maker had previously said it would deliver an Android 9 Pie update to the Galaxy S9 by January, but rather than wait another week (or longer), the update is starting to roll out now to both the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+. In case you pay attention to such things, the update for the Galaxy S9 changes the software version to G960FXXU2CRLI, and for the Galaxy S9+ it changes the software version to G965FXXU2CRLI. It appears that both are rolling out to users in Germany before the rest of the world. If you live in Germany and own either device, head to Settings > Software update and tap Download... Samsung's latest flagship Android smartphones include the Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, and the Galaxy Note 9, however, sales volume for the former two devices hasn't exactly been impressive. In July Samsung reported softer profits with the finger pointed directly at lower than expected sales of its flagship devices. Samsung has now stepped up to the plate and is doubling its Galaxy Note 9, S9, and S9+ trade-in offer on eligible smartphones. Samsung's double trade-in value deal runs from October 5, 2018, through November 3, 2018, and is valid at Best Buy, AT&T, Samsung.com, and other retailers. It's probably going to be best for those wanting to take advantage of this deal to buy directly via... Read more...
Earlier this month, Samsung issued guidance for Q2 2018, indicating that revenue and profit would be down compared to the previous quarter and that profit would be up slightly for the quarter, year-over-year. Samsung blamed this guidance on soft sales of its premier Galaxy S9 family. Today, the company released its official results for Q2, and they're right in line with the earlier guidance. Consolidated revenue for the quarter came in at KRW 58.48 trillion ($52.3 billion), which represented a 4 percent drop compared to the same period last year. However, operating profit rose by 6 percent to 14.87 trillion ($13.3 billion). According to Samsung, the drop in quarterly revenue was primarily... Read more...
Samsung is just weeks away from launching its Galaxy Note 9 smartphone, which will serve as the company's ultimate flagship for 2018. However, could this be the end of the line for the long-running Galaxy Note series? It's possible according to a new report coming out of South Korea. As we all know, the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note families have been increasingly meeting parity with regards to features. And when looking at the Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 (and the Galaxy S9+ compared to the incoming Galaxy Note 9), there is very little to distinguish the two other than the inclusion of the S Pen on the latter.  In an effort to reduce R&D costs, the two lines could be merged in... Samsung never misses an opportunity to throw some shade at Apple, its main rival in the mobile sector. There is no love lost between these two tech giants, and if anyone needs reminding of that, just check out Samsung's latest advertisement poking fun at the iPhone X. This time it's not over the infamous notch, however, but the phone's download speeds. The ad begins by spoofing the Genius Bar. It's titled "Ingenius: Speed" and it features what is supposed to be an Apple Store employee. A customer walks in, who the employee instantly recognizes as Rosie (from previous ads), and asks about the iPhone X's download performance. "Okay, so the ten doesn't have the fastest download speeds?," Rosie asks.... Read more...
A man from Odessa, Florida claims that his girlfriend's Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphone started smoking and caught fire. Dave Warden III says the pair were wrapping up dinner when he noticed the Galaxy S9 starting to smoke on the kitchen counter.  "There was popping, cracking, tingling," said Warden. He says soon after the smoke started 12-inch flames began to spew out of the smartphone. He attempted to pick up the phone and throw it into the sink but missed the sink tossing the phone onto the floor instead. The man claims that his hands were burned while trying to move the phone. "It burned for so long that we actually had enough time to grab my phone and actually get video of it... Read more...
Shares of Samsung are down more than 2 percent today after the South Korean electronics posted its earnings guidance for the second quarter of 2018. The disappointing numbers suggest that Samsung's flagship handsets, including the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, are struggling to maintain strong sales momentum amid increased competition in the marketplace. Samsung reported that sales for the second quarter fell to 58 trillion won (~$52 billion), compared with 60.56 trillion won (~$54.3 billion) in the previous quarter, and 61 trillion won (~$54.6 billion) in the same quarter a year ago. The company also a sequential decline in operating profit, which dropped from 15.64 trillion won (~$14 billion) to... Read more...
If you own one of Samsung's Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus smartphones a wild bug making the rounds is leaving customers on edge. Reports indicate that some users have seen the default messaging app randomly send photos from their gallery to contacts without their knowledge. One impacted user claims that the Samsung device sent the entire photo gallery to their girlfriend. Another user from reddit reported that the device had sent photos to his wife. The photos are being sent out over the stock Samsung messaging app. The particularly odd thing about this bug is that there is no record that the photos are being sent out left on the phone according to the Reddit user. There is a record, however, in... Read more...
There's no question that Samsung's Galaxy series are among the most popular Android smartphones on the planet. The newest entries into the family -- the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ -- launched earlier the year and were most recently embiggened with larger storage capacities. Now, Samsung is adding a new color to the mix for those that haven't yet upgraded their smartphone: Sunrise Gold. Sunrise Gold joins the existing range of colors that include Lilac Purple, Coral Blue and Midnight Black. The gold-tinged Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will still have an all-black front like the other colors offered.  It should be noted that if you have a hankering for gold, it will be an exclusive via Best... Apple has been involved in a few controversies over the past six months, most recently with butterfly keyboard failures on the MacBook Pro. However, prior to that, the company came under fire for the peculiar display notch on the iPhone X and performance throttling due to “well-seasoned” batteries on older iPhones. Samsung has of course been taking notice of what’s going on in the world of iPhones and has followed up with a new commercial that trolls Apple. The commercial follows the travails of a woman as she navigates through a busy airport, only to be literally slowed down by her iPhone 6, which is experiencing performance throttling issues. By the time that she gets... Read more...
Samsung is known to shake things up with special color options for its high-end smartphones, sometimes offering them exclusively through Best Buy. To keep the trend going, Samsung is rolling out Sunrise Gold and Burgundy Red versions of its Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. There's good news and bad news there, though. The good news is both color options look snazzy, but the bad news is neither one will be available in the United States right off the bat. At least initially, the Burgundy Red edition will only be available in Korea and China starting sometime this month. Samsung will then launch the Sunrise Gold version next month in Australia, Chile, Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Spain,... Read more...
Do you think you have a strong eye for photography? OnePlus aims to put that to the test as part of a clever (and fun) marketing strategy to promote the upcoming launch of its next flagship phone, the OnePlus 6. The company has assembled a collection of photographs taken with the OnePlus 6, iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9, and Pixel 2, and is asking users to vote on the best one in each category. What makes the challenge so interesting is that the photos are not labeled—there is no indication of which photo was taken with which phone. There is no identifying information in the metadata either, and every shot is the exact same size. You can enlarge each image for a closer look at the details,... Read more...
If you're a Verizon Wireless customer looking to purchase a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ in the near future, we've got some bad news for you. America's largest wireless carrier has just signed deal with Samsung that will see Verizon’s Oath subsidiary install bloatware across devices that are Bixby-enabled.  We don't know of many (or rather, any) people that enjoy having their mobile devices preloaded with unnecessary apps, but Verizon sees this as another way to drive revenue from customers that are increasingly turning away from traditional ways to view content. In this case, Samsung devices bought through Verizon Wireless will come preloaded with Yahoo Sports, Oath Newsroom,... Read more...
If 64GB of internal storage isn't enough for you (even though the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus offer micoSDXC slots for expansion), then Samsung has new storage options for you to choose from on its flagship Android Oreo smartphones. The company just announced that it will begin selling both 128GB and 256GB variants of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ starting on May 1st. The standard Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ with 64GB of internal storage cost $719.99 and $839.99 respectively direct from Samsung. Opting for the 128GB variant will up those prices to $769.99 and $889.99 respectively. The range-topping 256GB SKU will raise the prices to $819.99 and $939.99 respectively. The smartphones will be available in Lilac... Read more...
Samsung, don't give in!! We've seen a number of manufacturers embrace the "display notch" when it comes to the 2018 refresh of flagship smartphones. Up until this point, Samsung has stayed the course, delivering the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+with traditional Infinity Displays. However, a newly uncovered design patent shows that Samsung could be pulled to the Dark Side with future Galaxy smartphones. The images in the design patent show a device with minimal display bezels and a notched display at the top that houses the selfie camera, speaker and various other sensors. Out back, we see dual cameras and an LED flash, but no apparent signs of a fingerprint reader. That leads us to... Read more...
If you're looking for a swanky new accessory to increase the productivity of your new Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+, Samsung has announced that its DeX Pad will ship next month (May 13th). The DeX Pad in effect turns your relatively small Galaxy S9 into a near-desktop class computing machine. You will of course need to attach a monitor, keyboard and mouse to the DeX Pad to access the desktop mode, which still runs the Android interface. However, with the added real estate of a desktop monitor, you can enjoy big-screen gaming, movies and multitasking that you would otherwise need a PC to achieve.  The DeX Pad connects to your Samsung smartphone's USB-C port (which means that you'll... We have probably said it a million times by now, but Samsung's Super AMOLED displays are some of the best looking panels on mobile, bar none. The same is true of the company's newest flagship phones, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, though unfortunately the experience is being marred for some due to an unknown issue that is causing the parts of the touchscreen to be unresponsive. "Does anyone else have issues with the Galaxy S9 touchscreen? I've got a few dead spots on the bottom half of my screen. Getting a replacement phone shipped but do wonder if it is bad luck or a more common issue with the phone," a user asked on Samsung's community forums. Other have chimed in with complaints of the same... Read more...
