If you're looking for a swanky new accessory to increase the productivity of your new Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+, Samsung has announced that its DeX Pad will ship next month (May 13th). The DeX Pad in effect turns your relatively small Galaxy S9 into a near-desktop class computing machine.

You will of course need to attach a monitor, keyboard and mouse to the DeX Pad to access the desktop mode, which still runs the Android interface. However, with the added real estate of a desktop monitor, you can enjoy big-screen gaming, movies and multitasking that you would otherwise need a PC to achieve.

The DeX Pad connects to your Samsung smartphone's USB-C port (which means that you'll need a Galaxy S8/S8+, Galaxy S8 Active, Galaxy S9/S9+ or a Galaxy Note8) and includes two USB 2.0 (Type-A) ports for connecting a mouse and keyboard. There's also an HDMI port for hooking up your monitor. The dock supports resolution of 1600x900 (HD+), 1920x1080 (HD) and 2560x1440 (QHD), and Samsung has a number of apps that are already optimized for the DeX UI so that you can get the most out of your "desktop" computing experience. As an added bonus, when your smartphone is plugged in to the DeX Dock, its display can function as a touchpad.

Dex Pad

“The Samsung DeX Pad bridges the gap between smartphone and desktop. With its desktop interface, and easy connection to a mouse, monitor, and keyboard, DeX Pad helps you get the most out of your favorite apps,” said Alanna Cotton, SVP for Samsung Electronics America. “DeX Pad is more than an accessory, it is reflective of our philosophy of mobile technology: innovative devices and services, working together seamlessly, to help consumers do more.”

The DeX Pad is available for pre-order right now via Samsung.com for $99. However, customers that purchase a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ direct from Samsung can get the DeX Dock for free for a limited time. We should also note that that DeX Pad is only compatible with Samsung smartphones running Android 8.0 Oreo, so you'll want to make sure that you've gotten all of the latest updates from Samsung before using the accessory.
