Amazon has made a big announcement with regards to its Alexa Voice Service (AVS), which is used on all Alexa-compatible devices. Previously, the Alexa Announcements feature of AVS was only available to Amazon-branded devices, like the Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Show. However, Amazon announced this week that all Alexa-capable devices will now support the feature, which in effect works like a one-way intercom system. For instance, if you're downstairs in the kitchen and you have Alexa devices spread throughout all the bedrooms and shared spaces within the house, you could say "Alexa, tell everyone that dinner is ready", and your message will be broadcast through all of the devices within... Last December, Amazon rolled out a new wall clock that had some cool connectivity options with its voice assistant smart speakers. One of the things that people who cook like to do with Alexa devices is to set timers for the various dishes they are preparing. Since most Alexa speakers have no screen, it's hard to tell how much time is left on those timers. The Echo Wall Clock fixes that by showing the timer on the face of the clock. When it launched the Echo Wall Clock was $29.99. For the first time, the Echo Wall Clock is on sale with a 17% discount bringing the cost of the Echo Wall Clock down to $24.99. That's not a huge discount, but considering how cheap the clock was to start with, and... Read more...
It seems that Amazon is a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and in particular Commander Deanna Troi, the half-human, half-Betazoid that can sense emotions. Amazon wants its Alexa digital assistant to have the same capability. In a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Amazon describes an Alexa-powered wearable that can discern different human emotions. Think of it as the modern day mood bracelet, only instead of changing color to supposedly let you (and others) know how you're feeling, it simply listens. Well, it's not quite that simple—the wearable listens and processes the sound of your voice to determine your emotional state. It's what humans have been... Read more...
We might be living in a high-tech world these days, but the concepts of everyday living remain the same. Case in point—I remember when I was a kid visiting my aunt and uncle's house in Cambridge, Massachusetts, they had a timer for their living room lamp to give the appearance that someone was home, or awake, during late hours. Fast forward to today and Amazon is introducing a similar feature as part of its 'Alexa Guard' for Echo devices. As the name implies, the new Guard functionality enables Alexa to beef up the security in homes, for Echo device owners. It was previously available to users in the US through an invite system, in preview form, and is now being rolled out as a free update... Read more...
One of the biggest conveniences of using a digital assistant is hands-free operation. Thanks to a recent Alexa app update for Windows 10, Amazon has made that ability possible on Windows 10 systems, allowing users to invoke the digital assistant whether it is running in the background or foreground. It's a 'Look Ma, no hands!' moment. "Today, Amazon released a new version of the Alexa app for Windows 10 PCs that allows customers to access the experience hands-free on Windows 10 devices,” Amazon stated in an email. "This means you can easily invoke Alexa regardless of whether the app is running in the foreground or background—all you need to do is ask." This functionality is otherwise... Read more...

Amazon is doing very well in the booming smart speaker market with its popular Alexa-powered line of Echo devices. Amazon had moved 100 million Alexa devices as of January 2019, and as speakers gain popularity, more issues are arising that consumers should be aware of. A new report claims that Amazon has thousands of workers who have the sole task of listening to the audio recordings from Alexa devices. Amazon has teams around the world that listen to recordings, transcribe them, and send them onto the Echo team to fill gaps in the speech recognition capabilities of the devices. The report claims that sometimes the workers can hear chatter in the background of the recordings they are... Read more...
Amazon may be getting ready to inject its popular Alexa digital assistant into a pair of wireless earbuds. They would be similar to Apple's premium wireless AirPods, except users would be able to summon Alexa with their voice to play music, look up the weather, and of course order goods from Amazon's ever-expanding catalog of items. Alexa is finding itself in an increasing number of places these days—in January, Amazon SVP of devices and services, Dave Limp, revealed that over 100 million devices with Alexa on board had been sold. The digital assistant is also constantly being upgraded with new skills. Amazon's rumored wireless earbuds would sit in the ear without a hook, just like Apple's... Read more...
