One of the first times we laid eyes on a curved monitor in the flesh was back at CES 2015 where Dell was showing off this 34-inch bad boy to the masses. Since then curved monitors have been cropping up all over the place, and even a few curved all-in-ones have made a showing here in Q4. Acer recently stepped up with its Predator line of displays including the 34-inch curvaceous Predator X34 that we immediately sat-up and took note of. The Predator X34 is not only a 34-inch curved panel targeted at gamers with refresh rate overclocking up to 100Hz, but it also comes with two flavors of Adaptive Refresh Rate (ARR) technology - either NVIDIA G-SYNC or AMD FreeSync. The G-SYNC enabled model sports... Read more...
For the last few years, NVIDIA has used the lead-up to the Consumer Electronics Show to announce new Tegra-related products and technologies. This year is no different. Earlier today, we got together with representatives from NVIDIA to talk about the company’s upcoming Tegra X1 system on a chip (SoC) and see the reference platform in action, running a variety of benchmarks and demos. NVIDIA Tegra X1 System On A Chip At last year’s CES, NVIDIA announced the Tegra K1 featuring a Kepler-derived GPU, which has since found its way into the excellent SHIELD Tablet, Google’s Project Tango device, and the Nexus 9. Microsoft, it seems, just can't catch a break. Days after a major hack took its servers offline on Christmas and after being lambasted in multiple stories for shipping games like Halo: The Master Chief Collection in nigh-unplayable condition, the company's Xbox One SDK has been leaked to the public by a group calling itself H4LT.  H4LT, which apparently objects to being called a hacker group, offered this explanation when asked why it was distributing the SDK. The group claims that:  We leaked it to the community because if something is shared then.. progress is achieved faster than alone. Something kept between us will not achieve anything. Share it with the community = creativity... Read more...
We first caught wind on the Alienware Alpha in the lead-up to Valve’s Steam Box announcements, prior to the Consumer Electronics Show. If you’re unfamiliar with the Alienware Alpha, it is a sleek, small form factor gaming PC, designed specifically for gamers. Valve is not quite ready with Steam OS or the Steam Controller, so the whole Steam Box angle is on hold for now, but that didn’t stop Alienware from re-tooling a bit and shipping the Alpha with Windows 8.1 instead. There are a number of Alpha configurations currently available. The machines have a starting price of $549 with the entry-level configuration featuring an Intel Core i3-4130T dual-core processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 500GB hard drive,... Read more...
In what could be one of the biggest violations ever, Honda Motor Co. admitted that it had failed to report more than 1,700 claims of injury or death to US regulators from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2014. Because of the company’s negligence, it could be fined $35 million.According to an internal review that was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Honda blamed its under-reporting of the incidents to “inadvertent data entry or computer program errors.” During the aforementioned time period, Honda had only reported 1, 144 serious injury claims with the omissions only being revealed due to the recent investigations focusing on the airbag recalls by Takata Corp.“The audit identifies... Microsoft’s Xbox One may be behind Sony’s PlayStation 4 in terms of sales, but that hasn’t stopped the company from trying to catch up. Microsoft has reduced the console’s price and, starting today, HBO Go is now available for Xbox One users in the US. Release of HBO Go app’s makes Xbox One the first system, of the current generation, to make it available for gamers. Xbox One owners will now be able to stream all of HBO’s shows such as Game of Thrones, The Newsroom, and Boardwalk Empire so long as they have an HBO subscription. The app also features Kinect voice and gesture controls for those who own Microsoft’s motion-sensing camera. “Xbox is one of our subscribers’ favorite ways to access HBO... Read more...
After several months of rumors, the HTC First emerged as the closest thing there is to a Facebook phone, only it doesn't appear long for this world. The fellas over at Boy Genius Report claim to have it on good authority that AT&T has already decided to flush the First from inventory and discontinue the short-lived experiment, though the writing was on the wall before today. Not even a full week ago, AT&T slashed the price of the HTC First from $100 down to $1 (subsidized with a two-year service agreement, of course), essentially giving it away to anybody who wanted one and was willing to pony up for 24 months of service. Having slept on it over the weekend, AT&T has now decided it's... Read more...
For many users, smartphones are tools that are more about the software and user experience than the hardware. Of course, you still need adequate hardware and smooth performance to ensure a good experience, but beyond that, there are plenty of users who are attracted more to software and easy-to-use features than anything else. As the first phone to ship with Facebook Home preinstalled, the new HTC First is hoping to attract customers who care most about the Facebook experience on their phones. Facebook Home is deeply integrated with Android and offers notifications, status updates, photos, messages, and more directly from the phone's home screen... HTC First With Facebook Home Review... Mark Zuckerberg took the stage at Facebook’s Menlo Park headquarters to announce Home, which as expected is not a new piece of hardware nor a completely new operating system, but a deep Facebook integration with Android that goes beyond what an app can do. Zuck put it in a nutshell by saying that instead of phones being designed around apps, Facebook wanted to design around people. More to the point, Home is designed to make communicating and Facebooking easier to do. The first main feature is the Cover feed, which functions as both a lock screen and a home screen. Your lock screen has sliding pictures that displays what amounts to your Newsfeed, only one story at a time. You can comment... Read more...
If the world came to end tomorrow because of a nuclear war, all that would remain are cockroaches and Facebook phone rumors. Lighting up more speculation on the latter, Facebook has started inviting members of the press to an event at its headquarters on April 4. It's headlined, "Come See Our New Home On Android." That doesn't necessarily mean a smartphone is in the works -- especially after Mark Zuckerberg recently went on record saying he has no interest in building such a device -- but according to TechCrunch's un-named sources, that's going to be the big reveal. Well, sort of. The sources say Facebook will unveil a modified version of Android with native Facebook functionality on the homescreen,... Read more...
After having its Google+ profile removed for community standards violations, hacker collective Anonymous has decided to try the social networking thing for itself. The site, currently running under the temporary name of AnonPlus, is only a splash page at this point, with a message explaining the intent and goals of the site. Primarily, Anonymous wants a site where there will be no fear of "censorship," "blackout," or "holding back." They also mention that the site will be open to anyone that wants to join and not just to members of Anonymous. "This project is not overnight and will take many of those out there who simply want a better internet," notes the message. "We will not be stopped by those... Read more...
Well, these aren't quite "Facebook phones," but the rumors were at least somewhat true. HTC was indeed working on a Facebook-centric phone (two, actually), and while these do a lot more than just check and update statuses, there's no question that social networking comes first on the ChaCha and Salsa. The Latin-inspired phones are designed to be featurephones with some sophisticated features usually reserved for smartphones. But clearly, the target market here are teens who are simply obsessed with checking their profiles. These two were also launched at Mobile World Congress, and the highlight feature on both is the dedicated Facebook key. Each one features Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread), and HTC's... Read more...
And people wonder why making money in the stock market is a crap shoot. A hedge fund will open in February that uses "Twitter sentiment" to predict the stock market. The British hedge fund is named Derwent Absolute Return. Its founders say they have an algorithm that can analyze sentiments on Twitter. A trading model will highlight when the number of times words on Twitter such as “calm” rise above or below average. A paper by the University of Manchester and Indiana University... Read more...
It seems we can't go a month without talking about privacy concerns surrounding one of today's popular social networking sites. Whether it's a new Facebook setting or other security breach, keeping one's private information private isn't always easy. A recent poll by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion claims that half of all US residents who use a social-networking site are concerned about privacy. Of this group, close to half describe themselves as very concerned. As one might expect, fears concerning privacy increased as the age of survey respondents went up: only 43 percent of respondents between 18 and 29 said they were concerned compared to 63 percent of those over 60. In terms of gender,... Read more...
