Less than five months after it debuted for iOS, Vine is now available for Android, Twitter announced in a blog post today. In case you haven't been following, Twitter snagged the video sharing service last year before it launched. The two are a natural fit, as Twitter encourages succinct posts by limiting tweets to 140 characters or less, while Vine limits videos to 6 seconds or less, which are then continuously looped. "Android owners: Welcome to Vine. Starting today, you can begin to shoot, share and watch short looping videos. We’ve been looking forward to this day, and we’re excited to get the app into your hands," Twitter said. Many of the same features that more than 13 million... Read more...
All it takes is for one bad apple to spoil the bunch, and when a Twitter staff member inadvertently selected a pornographic Vine video as an Editor's Pick, all hell broke loose and it was suddenly "Game over, man!" for teens under the age of 17 years old. Twitter quickly yanked the video and apologized for what it deemed "human error," but to prevent something like that from happening again, the microblogging site now requires that users certify they are at least 17 years old before downloading the app. Vine is a relatively new app, having only launched a month ago. At the time, it carried a 12+ rating, but that's not been bumped to 17+ due to a laundry list of adult themes, including: Infrequent/Mild... Read more...
It’s way too early to see if Vine is going to mean long-term success for Twitter, but it’s certainly getting off to an auspicious start. The video service, which lets users embed 6-second videos in their tweets, has already broken into the top 15 apps in the iTunes App Store. On top of that, Vine may have already made enemies with Facebook, as evidenced by an “error” now preventing Vine users from copying their Facebook friends into their Vine directory. Right now, Vine is only available for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Android versions out soon. After all, Vine is killing it in the iTunes App Store. At the moment (and only a... Read more...
If you think 140-character tweets are restrictive, try a six-second video. After picking up Vine late last year, Twitter decided the time was ripe to launch Vine as an app that complements Twitter’s text-based messages with short, looping videos. “Posts on Vine are about abbreviation – the shortened form of something larger,” writes Vine co-founder Dom Hofmann on Vine’s blog. “They’re little windows into the people, settings, ideas and objects that make up your life. They’re quirky, and we think that’s part of what makes them so special.” If you want to try the Vine app out, you’ll need to do so on an iPhone or iPod Touch, as those... Read more...
