Better late than never, right? Despite demonstrating the ability to simply speak searches to the Chrome browser at the I/O 2013 conference, Google has just now perfected it to the point where it feels comfortable with a release. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Google has announced a plug-in that will enable Chrome browser users on laptops and desktops to simply start speaking to their PC, and have Chrome respond. Moto X users are already familiar with how this works, but it'll be a new learning experience for practically everyone else. You can simply speak "Ok Google," followed by a question or a command to set a reminder, and the Chrome browser will follow. To access hands-free search on your... Read more...
Wait, wait, Barack, it's a game.  They're not wasting real gasoline.  Oh, wait, that's not his point.Obama's comments came during a campaign stop in Indianapolis. He told the crowd, "I was just catching the news this morning about Grand Theft Auto, this video game, which is gonna break all records and make goo-gobs of money for whoever designed it."Now, this isn’t intended for kids, although I promise you there are kids who are playing it, but these video games are raising our kids," Obama continued. "Across the board, middle-class, upper-class, working-class kids, they’re spending a huge amount of their time not on their studies, but on entertainment. "While he has some good points,... A Pew Internet and American Life Project study shows that not only has text message speak reached schoolwork, so has Jerry Yang-ish lack of capitalization!Teens may spend a lot of time texting and IMing, but they don't consider those short exchanges to be writing. If it's not assigned to them through school, they have a hard time thinking about it as legit. These are among the findings of a national phone survey of 700 young people (ages 12 to 17) and their parents conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project and the National Commission on Writing last fall, the results of which were released Thursday. Eight focus groups in four cities also were questioned in the summer of 2007.The... Read more...
With all the buzz around VIA's recent announcement of their next generation low power Isaiah mobile processor, we thought it would be a good idea to get together with some of VIA's top architecture and design brass in a "fireside chat" sort of venue.  The idea was to provide a little more insight into what the team at VIA feels will be the real value proposition of their ultra low power Isaiah mobile X86 processor and how the product will differentiate versus current and future offerings from the likes of Intel, AMD and others.  Our direct line of contact was with VIA's Centaur design center president, Glenn Henry.  Former Dell CTO and IBM Engineering Fellow, Glenn founded Centaur... Specifically, Intel President Paul Otellini offered insight into Intel's next-gen multi-core processor, code named Nehalem and much more.  Snip:  “Nehalem will feature 8-cores on a single die and each core can process two threads, for a total of 16 threads per 8-core CPU. Nehalem processors will be comprised of roughly 731M transistors and feature a number of new technologies.”   HotHardware's coverage is here.... Read more...

AMDZone has a summary of Carmack's two hour heart-to-heart at Quakecon.  In that time he gave his thoughts on a broad range of industry topics, from Physics Cards, Multi-Core CPUs and the ATI/AMD merger to name a few.   "Multicore/multithreading he does believe that there is more benefit to it than widening SIMD. He sees the end to the great CPU clock up, and that threading is the way to go. They have had success to using threading with graphics renderer, but can improve it. Sound is another good possibility. The process of multithreading is difficult, but there are benefits. But when you can only thread 20% of a game you do not get a huge increase in peformance. Multicore... Read more...

FiringSquad has posted some interesting comments from Havok concerning the physics in Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter and how it relates to Ageia's new physics card. Havok does not seem to be pulling any punches as they claim that the use of Ageia's discrete PPU does not offer any significant visual differences and typically offers a few hundred additional particles. They strengthen their grip around the neck of Ageia by claiming that the PPU actually slows down framerates as the CPU/GPU are now burdened with handling the added debris and effects. Rest assured, Hot Hardware will have the exhaustive review of the Ageia PPU in the very near future and Havok's claims... Read more...

Sapphire Radeon X300SE HyperMemory & Leadtek WinFast PX6200 TC TDH @ Bjorn3D: "To make a respectable profit in the video card industry, a company cannot rely on its flagship cards to bring in high margins. Instead, a graphics card company must produce mid-level and low-end cards that will sell in big lots to OEMs. That's where the big money is. Several months ago, ATI and NVIDIA decided to spice up the low-end segment with their HyperMemory and TurboCache technologies, respectively." Good morning all!  Most of us in the States are at the beginning of a 3-day weekend.  While I know I look forward to it, I also welcome the extra time to work on a couple of sweet pieces of hardware. Speaking of hardware, AMDZone has the X850XT Platinum on tap, an impressive looking card.  Make sure you check out Marco's take on this card too. ATI Radeon X850XT Platinum Edition Review @ AMDZone: "As you can see the card is equipped with a copper heat sink and large red exhaust fan. The fan helps to reduce overall system temperature by drawing internal air over the heat sink and expelling it from the back of the computer. On the back of the card you will notice the metal band... Hey folks, it's late but I've come to bring you the news while I still have a little brain activity left. Goodnight and peace out ;) Slipstreaming Office 2003 SP1 @ Viper Lair "Quite a few folks out there have a tendency or need to reinstall their systems on a regular basis and whilst many have got this down to an art, finding a shortcut that can reduce the overall re-install time is always a boon. I personally like to reinstall from scratch rather than making disk images, since I can update my applications along the way, but in the case of Microsoft Office we do have an option for a shortcut."
