Earlier this month, OnePlus was busted for throttling the performance of its OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro smartphones in a wide variety of Android applications. The revelation was only brought to light by extensive research by AnandTech, after which OnePlus came clean to the tech community. The incident led to Geekbench delisting OnePlus devices from its popular benchmark, while OnePlus tried to explain that it took these actions to improve battery life for customers. "Our R&D team has been working over the past few months to optimize the devices' performance when using 300 of the most popular apps, including Chrome, by matching the app's processor requirements with the most appropriate power," said... OnePlus' behavior with its smartphones running OxygenOS came under scrutiny earlier this week. According to a new report, the company's flagship OnePlus 9 Pro has its performance throttled – on purpose – in hundreds of popular Android apps. AnandTech performed an exhaustive investigation into the throttling behavior on the OnePlus 9 and found that OxygenOS – OnePlus's flavor of Android 11 – includes a special blacklist of apps that are forbidden from using its fastest "Prime" core or can only use it with a much lower clock speed. As a result, performance takes a noticeable nosedive on the OnePlus 9 Pro compared to other flagship Android devices using the Qualcomm Snapdragon... Read more...
The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro were first announced just over a week ago, and we followed up with our review of both smartphones. Today, however, marks the flagship Snapdragon 888 devices' official launch, and here's where you can purchase them in both unlocked and carrier-locked form. You can get the base OnePlus 9 unlocked direct from OnePlus, or you can choose to go with Amazon or Best Buy. Amazon only offers the OnePlus 9 in Winter Mist, while both OnePlus and Best Buy offer Winter Mist and Astral Black. The price at each store is $729.99, which is value-priced for a Snapdragon 888-powered flagship smartphone. OnePlus 9 $729.99 8GB RAM 128GB Unlocked @ Amazon OnePlus 9 $729.99 8GB RAM 128GB... When the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro were first announced last week, it was confirmed that the smartphones would support 4G LTE across all three major U.S. networks: AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. However, when it came to 5G support, things were definitely more limited. When announced, the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro only supported 5G connectivity on T-Mobile. At the time, OnePlus said that 5G support on Verizon's wireless network would be coming at a later date. Well, Verizon announced late last week that both smartphones are now certified to work on its "Nationwide 5G" network. Nationwide 5G in Verizon parlance refers to its sub-6GHz 5G network, in case you were wondering. Since I’m... Read more...
By now, you’ve read the leaks, rumors, buzz and hype. The OnePlus 9 series is finally here, and as always, there’s a lot to talk about. 2020 saw OnePlus launch three flagships, the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro in the spring, and the 8T (basically an updated OnePlus 8) in the fall. But OnePlus also went down-market with three more handsets last year -- the mid-range Nord and the affordable Nord N10 5G and N100. If that seems like a lot of devices, it is -- not to mention the TVs, earbuds, and watch. OnePlus is basically following Oppo’s playbook. And after years of obviously sharing tech, the two companies recently consolidated their hardware research teams under one name: OPlus. Yes,... Read more...
Over the past week, the OnePlus 9 Pro's final form was revealed in leaked renders. Today, however, OnePlus is going one step further by providing us with official renders of its upcoming flagship sans the watermarks from typical early leaks.  OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took to Twitter to release a bevy of renders of the OnePlus 9 Pro in a new silvery color called Morning Mist. According to Lau, "it takes 30 steps and more than 25 days to create the final finish on this extraordinary glass." Although users probably aren't that interested in how long it takes for the final product, as long as it's durable, we can't argue with mirror-like good looks. Also clearly visible is the... The cat is out of the bag, in terms of what the upcoming OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro smartphones will look like, courtesy of some leaked renders. Not surprisingly, the overall design language is fairly consistent with past iterations, and premium smartphones in general. However, the press renders do highlight that OnePlus is tapping Hasselblad for the rear cameras. Camera performance is a primary consideration for many people when shopping for a smartphone. By and large, these sleek pocket computers have mostly replaced point-and-click cameras. They are still not on the level of a digital SLR shooter, but smartphone cameras are continually improving, with advanced capabilities to boot (like nighttime... Read more...
It's no secret that the OnePlus 9 family of smartphones is blasting off soon, and in recent weeks we've learned more details about the devices. One recent rumor was that at least the OnePlus 9 Pro would come packing a Hasselblad-branded camera system on the rear, which was later bolstered by OnePlus' "Moonshot" teaser. Today, OnePlus officially announced that it entered a 3-year partnership with Hasselblad to develop a next-generation camera system for the OnePlus 9 Series. Some of the fruits of this new collaboration include technology branded as Natural Color Calibration with Hasselblad. This new feature aims to bring more "accurate and natural-looking" colors to the cameras... Read more...
Last April, OnePlus launched the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, which brought Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 brawn to the brand. Since then, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 888, a new mobile platform SoC for 5G flagships, including the rumored OnePlus 9. Now, it is nearly time for OnePlus to make an announcement, and we are starting to hear rumblings of a OnePlus device launch on March 8th. Today, founder and CEO of OnePlus, Pete Lau, told people to “Stay tuned for March 8th” with a link to a new OnePlus webpage called “Moonshot.” That webpage says, “Something new is on the horizon,” with another notice to stay tuned to the webpage. We can only speculate that March... Read more...
Things have been relatively quiet on the OnePlus 9 leak front for the past few weeks. However, we're getting our best look yet at the upcoming flagship OnePlus 9 Pro, if these latest images are indeed accurate. YouTuber Dave2D claims to have obtained images of the upcoming OnePlus 9 Pro from an anonymous source, and it's quite an interesting device. The first thing that pops into focus is the rear camera pod, which features Hasselblad branding. Hasselblad is well-known for its high-end professional cameras, and it on occasion lends its expertise to "lesser" consumer electronics devices. The camera systems on previous OnePlus smartphones have been competent, but usually aren't at the... Read more...
According to previous leaks, OnePlus has two smartphones geared up for launch during the first quarter of 2021: the flagship OnePlus 9 Pro, which will be joined by the lesser OnePlus 9. Both smartphones are expected to incorporate Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 888 5G Mobile Platform, which as we've seen from new benchmarks, will provide quite a boost over the outgoing Snapdragon 865. However, there's fresh news today that claims that a third member smartphone will also launch in Q1 2021 to take up a lower price point. It's rumored that the OnePlus 9 Lite will join its higher-end siblings, and will make a few sacrifices to reach a lower price point. For starters, according... Read more...
Smartphone OEMs are gearing up for the next round of flagship smartphones that will be based around Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 875 SoC. OnePlus is normally among the first to announce new designs based on Qualcomm's newest flagship chips, and that tradition is expected to continue with the OnePlus 9 Pro. First and foremost, we can see that the OnePlus 9 Pro features a 6.7-inch curved 120Hz QHD+ display. There are slim bezels at the top and bottom of the smartphone along with a hole punch cutout for the selfie camera in the top left-hand corner of the display. The familiar OnePlus alert slider and power button are located on the left side of the chassis, while the back is predictably made... Read more...
