An as yet unidentified individual posted allegedly private & secure account information for approximately 1200 eBay users on eBay's own forums.  Thankfully the post has now been removed, but what kind of damage was done to those 1200 users?  We'll let the eBay spokesperson answer that:“Nichola Sharpe, an eBay spokeswoman, confirmed that on Tuesday morning someone the vendor describes as "a malicious fraudster" posted the names and contact information of 1,200 eBay members on the company's Trust & Safety discussion forum."This information could have been obtained as part of an account takeover. Since this time, our Trust and Safety team has been proactively addressing this situation,"... Read more...
The recent news that Ameritrade had been leaking sensitive customer data was enough to drive some investors away from Ameritrade for the time being, and possibly forever.  If you're an investor who is on the fence deciding when you might put your faith and financial security into Ameritrade's hands again, then you might want to know that Ameritrade was aware of some of their security breaches for over a year. The breach was so serious that Ameritrade found 'unauthorized code' in their systems, and have yet to be able to fully account for how it got there.  The breaches allowed for about 6 million customer records to be compromised, but the limits of what data was stolen hasn't been completely... The latest build of Windows Vista SP1 was distributed to its beta testers last week.  Naturally it was also distributed to the likes of BitTorrent and other P2P file-sharing networks, though of course without Microsoft's permission.  Unlike the first build that was released, this was a .EXE file, not an ISO image.   Build 6.0.6001.16633 (longhorn.070803-1655) weighs in at 684MB. However, Vista updates -- such as security patches and other hot fixes -- are normally packaged as .msu files, so the fact that the latest release is in .exe format may indicate that 6.0.6001.16633 is not a direct step toward a public release of SP1."Surprisingly, the update file is in the .exe format," a user identified... Guarding sensitive data is an extremely complex task and often requires a skilled IT team that stays on top of modern technology.  Of course, if your IT team does things like turning off firewalls in order to perform lengthy maintenance on servers (while leaving them connected to the internet), they might not really be a ‘good’ IT team to begin with.Sadly, this isn’t a hypothetical situation, but the true story of Verus, a Washington-based IT company that provides solutions for hospitals. Unprotected private data, which included names, addresses and social security numbers, soon became world-visible. At one point Google indexed the data. A woman searching for the details of a deceased friend... Read more...
While we wouldn't advise you to use a leaked copy of anything, that doesn't mean we wouldn't want to give you some insight into the upcoming Vista SP1 - which, as most of you should know, has had a beta leaked to the Internet.  APCMag took a close look at it, and found nothing earth-shattering (typical for most SPs, with the possible exception of XP SP2) - mostly bug fixes and performance enhancements. I made it my mission this weekend to trawl through the registry and file changes in SP1 to find out as best I could exactly what SP1 does. First up, I can say that there is a very noticeable performance increase. It is obvious that since Microsoft released Vista to manufacturing, it has... Read more...
As with any leaks of information from secret sources, take this with a grain of salt until you hear it from the source. That being said, ThinkSecret does have a very good track record for this kind of information, so it's possible this is at least very close to current plans. Read on: "Adobe plans to offer six bundles with various Creative Suite 3 applications: CS3 Web Standard, CS3 Web Premium, CS3 Design Standard, CS3 Design Premium, CS3 Production Premium, and the CS3 Master Collection. The least expensive of the six will be the CS3 Web Standard bundle, which will retail for $999 and includes Flash CS3 Professional, Dreamweaver CS3, Fireworks CS3, and Contribute CS3. For an additional... Read more...
Pictures of R600 have finally hit the net and boy, this card might be a bit on the large side. Supposedly, at launch the R600 will be available in two forms, the XTX and the XT. The XTX version of the card will sport 1GB of GDDR4 RAM and will be nearly 12" long consuming 275 Watts. The XT will have 512MB of GDDR4 RAM measuring in at 9.5" long and consuming 240 Watts. At the moment it looks like R600 is going to be a absolute monster in performance, size, and power consumption but we'll reserve our own commentary until we've actually tested the product.  For now, rumors and leaks are always fun to play with.  Just take them with a... New Scientist magazine's blog, Invention, is reporting that Seagate is filing a patent for a new self-lubrication technique to be used in hard drives. The new technology uses a material consisting of millions of carbon nanotubes to store the lubricant. As the hard drive spins, a lubricating vapor will "leak" out of the material and spread itself over the hard disk platter, protecting it against fatal head crashes. The read-write head(s) of a hard drive usually rides on a thin layer of fluid, such as air or lubricant. This layer prevents the head from touching the delicate surface of the hard drive platter. Such contact is often referred to as a "head crash".... Read more...
