We've always been somewhat skeptical of these so-called "surveys." With the proliferation of the Internet, it's pretty easy to fetch any kind of results you could ever want, but we tend to feel that these findings are at least somewhat substantiated. As part of a new 'Women & Digital Life' study, researchers found that Apple was the most popular technology brand in America amongst the ladies. Surprised? We doubt it.The results showed that Apple took the top spot, with Sony, Microsoft, Dell and HP following closely behind. And really, we can totally see why Apple and Sony would be ranked so highly. Last week Interbrand issued its 2008 Best Global Brands rankings. While most of the top 10 remained unchanged from 2007, with IBM and Microsoft swapping places (IBM rose from 3 to 2), one big change emerged: Google rose from 20 to 10, with Mercedes-Benz dropping to 11.  Interbrand produces this report annually, which is then used to produce a special report by Business Week.The report is generated from June 30th to June 30th annually, so while it does show quite a bit of financial firms dropping in global ranking from 2007, it doesn't show the full effect of the recent financial turmoil on Wall Street and elsewhere.  For example, Merrill Lynch dropped from 22 to 34, while HSBC dropped... The battle between Microsoft and Apple may have caused Microsoft to lose some of its luster in the global brand rankings.  The Redmond giant has slipped from number 11 to number 59 over the past three years."The effect of Apple's 'Hi, I'm a Mac' advertising campaign may have taken its toll on Microsoft," CoreBrand CEO James Gregory said in a statement. Lenovo just announced their second fiscal quarter results, ending Sept. 30th. Quarterly revenue jumped 20% to $4.4 billion, with pre-tax income of 125 million, up 177%. With results like these, Lenovo is convinced it no longer needs to rely on IBM branding for their Think series of products, and they plan to drop it two years earlier than planned."By making substantial progress on all of our critical priorities over the past few quarters, we're now a stronger, healthier company," said William Amelio, chief executive of Lenovo, in a press announcement relating to its quarterly results. Rumor has it that Intel will rebrand its processor line, beginning in January.  There is quite a bit of data, but it is still a rumor.At the moment, the Intel Centrino mobile platform has five different logos with brands like Centrino, Centrino Duo and Centrino Pro. Starting from January 1, 2008, Intel will consolidate the Centrino Duo and Centrino brands under the Intel Centrino brand, and rename the Centrino Pro as Intel Centrino with vPro Technology. According to our source, the new Intel Centrino with vPro Technology will be available in Q1, 2008. That was fast. Only a day after introducing their new line of aluminum and glass iMacs, Apple has released updates for them. The updates were only vaguely identified as providing "important bug fixes." Owners of the day-old 20-in. and 24-in. iMacs should install iMac Software Update 1.0, Apple said in a terse message accompanying the 5.1MB download, but it didn't spell out the exact fixes. Adtron announced that it is now shipping its new generation of Flashpak drives in both SATA and IDE interfaces in the 2.5" form factor. Here's a blast from the past.  The Inq is reporting that the Commodore brand could possibly re-emerge on a new line of high-end systems.  I don't know if slapping the old logo on a funky plastic case is enough to sway people away from today's current crop of boutique system builders, but with a little innovation and some good marketing, I'm sure some folks would buy a Commodore system for the nostalgia factor alone. "Now, the Commodore brand sits on a range of high-end PCs equipped with Nvidia's 7950 GX2 card and an AMD FX 60. Fudo over at The Inquirer reports that high-ranking ATI insiders are confirming that AMD will retain the ATI brand name for the next few years. Since AMD's acquisition of the company, the industry has run rampant with rumors that AMD would be discarding the ATI brand name though opting to keep the Radeon designation for GPU's. Should ATI's name remain in the industry, it will certainly make it easier for the company to continue selling chipsets for the Intel platform. Digitimes reports that Asustek will soon introduce a new brand, ASmobile, to be used by their whitebook products. The first notebook bearing the ASmobile brand will appear during the fourth quarter of 2006. Asustek is trying to repeat the success they enjoyed when they re-branded their low-price motherboards to ASRock. However, the ASmobile will not be tailored for the low end. Instead of low prices, the ASmobile brand will rely on high quality and customer loyalty, most likely targeting the mid to upper parts of the market. In a response to rumors of scrapping the ATi brand name, AMD has set the record straight with Ars Technica. AMD has said it plans to keep the ATi name, as well as the Radeon brand name. "Yesterday CustomPC claimed that AMD was going to scrap the ATI brand, inferring this in a most dubious manner. AMD's Gareth Cater had told them that AMD would, in fact, retain its name after the buyout was finished, meaning that AMD would remain AMD for the foreseeable future. Fudo over at The Inquirer reports that their industry sources are indicating that ATI has opted to name their highly-publicized RD500 chipset as "Crossfire 1600". Here, the 1600 designation is meant to imply the fact that this chipset only supports two PCIe 8x slots. For those waiting for two PCIe x16 slots, you will have to wait for ATI's RD600 chipset which is coming sometime down the road. Until then, the only other chipset options on the market for Conroe aside from RD500 would be Intel's own 975 and P965 chipsets. DigiTimes reports that Foxconn could be showing off their own branded graphics cards at Computex this year. With boards designed by Foxconn and manufactured by Flextronics, there should be no major barriers to entry into the GPU market for Foxconn. Flextronics has been a longtime manufacturing partner for NVIDIA and is responsible for producing a significant amount of graphics cards which are then re-branded as one of the more familiar graphics card vendor products. Given Foxconn's enormous size, it should be interesting to see how their products are differentiated.
