The Vivo V15 Pro is a perplexing smartphone; one that takes some of the intriguing design features of Vivo's previous flagship designs and applies them to a more budget-friendly device.  The most obvious feature of the V15 Pro is a large 6.4-inch OLED display this is unbroken by unsightly notches or punch-hole cutouts. Instead, the smartphone gets around these design crutches by placing the selfie camera on a module that pops out from the top of the smartphone. It's not the most elegant solution -- and it is a mechanical system that could be prone to malfunction -- but it does at least look cool. Speaking of the selfie camera (which we have previously talked about),... Read more...
All eyes are on Samsung and its upcoming Unpacked event as February 20 rolls into view, as the company is expected to announced its Galaxy S10 lineup and a new folding smartphone. Be that as it may, Samsung is not the only company with something up its sleeve. Vivo's social media team has been flailing about on Twitter, drawing attention to its V15 Pro smartphone with a pop-up camera. Like Samsung, Vivo is planning a full reveal of its upcoming handset on February 20, which is now just a week and a half away. In the meantime, Vivo confirmed that the V15 Pro will sport a pop-up camera for taking selfies, which means no bezel, no notch, and no punch-hole design—just a clean, full-front display... Forgot about bezels, notches, so-called 'punch holes', and anything else smartphone makers might come up with to accommodate a front camera while maintaining maximum screen real estate. Vivo took things in a different direction. The Chinese technology company formally introduced its Apex 2019 handset, and it boasts an impressive 98 percent screen-to-body ratio. The descriptor that is going around is "seamless," as in the Apex 2019 is a seamless fusion of glass and metal without any openings. It has an in-display fingerprint sensor, and if you run your fingers around the edges, you will not find any ports, not even a USB charging port—it charges wirelessly via a magnetic connector called... It appears that notches that were all the rage in 2018 flagship Android smartphones are either quickly shrinking or disappearing completely. Now, it looks as though physical buttons may be the next smartphone staple to get kicked to curb if Vivo has anything to say about it. This is the new Apex 2019, which is a smartphone concept from Chinese OEM Vivo. The Apex 2019 takes minimalistic design to the max by getting rid of any physical buttons. That's right, you won't find a power button or rockers for controlling the volume. Instead, you will discover a completely smooth body and rounded edges that said to be like a pebble. What's even more intriguing is that the Apex 2019 won't even include a... Read more...
The Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition is now official, which means that we're getting confirmation of some rather interesting design choices for a flagship Android phone. The original Nex avoided the whole notched display craze by using a fussy pop-up mechanism for the selfie camera, but the Nex Dual Display Edition goes in an entirely different direction. Instead of a pop-up mechanism that could be prone to damage, Vivo has opted to put two displays AMOLED displays on the device. There's a large bezel-free 6.39-inch display on the front (2340x1080), and another smaller 5.49-inch display on the back (1920x1080). By having a functional display panel on the back, it can... Smartphone makers are starting to experiment with new designs in order to stand out from the crowd, and we've seen some interesting concepts emerge. One of them is Samsung's upcoming folding phone—it turns into a tablet when opened. Vivo, meanwhile, seems to be readying a new smartphone with two displays, one on the front and one on the back. Image Source: Twitter via Ben Geskin (@VenyaGeskin1) Leaks and teasers all point to the Vivo Nex 2 being a dual-screen handset, which could be great for taking selfies. How so? For whatever reason, smartphone makers typically (not always) put a higher quality camera sensor on the rear of the phone. The Vivo Nex 2's backside display would make it easier... Read more...
After plenty of months of teasing (starting with a concept that was unveiled at CES 2018), Vivo has finally pulled the wraps off its next smartphone: the Nex. The Nex is the production version of the previous Apex concept and manages to achieve the holy grail when it comes to smartphone design: a near bezel-less display. The Nex has a tiny bezel at the bottom, but is otherwise a near bezel-free exercise along the sides and the top. We'll forgive the minuscule bottom bezel given that Vivo hasn't joined the "trendy" display notch bandwagon. Vivo says that the screen-to-body ratio of the smartphone stands at an impressive 91.24 percent. Oh, and the Ultra FullView display measures... Read more...
Smartphone manufacturers are going all-in when it comes to larger displays these days. In the case of devices like the iPhone X and the OnePlus 6, OEMs have taken to minimizing bezels all around and leaving a display notch in the top-center of the display to accommodate the front-facing camera and other sensors. Vivo, however, is going a different route with its next production smartphone. Vivo's smartphone will have tiny bezels all around and no notch. Well, what about the selfie camera you might ask? Vivo gets around that with a front-facing camera that pops out from the top of the phone. The result is what Vivo reckons will result in a smartphone that will have the world's best screen-to-body... Sing it with us now—'Vivoooo Las Vegas!' Wait, that doesn't sound right. However, Vivo is a name to pay attention to, assuming you are not already familiar with the Chinese brand. That's because Vivo just unveiled the world's first smartphone to sport a fingerprint sensor embedded into the display. No small feat, that is something that both Apple and Samsung having been working to achieve. In fact, it was largely assumed that Apple or Samsung would be the first to embed a fingerprint scanner into the display, rather than having it be part of a home button or on a dedicated spot on the back of the device. However, getting to that point has perhaps proven more difficult that either company... Read more...
When it comes to flagship smartphones, the new trend seems to be near bezel-less edge-to-edge displays. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is probably the best example of this, and the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 is expected to feature a similar design. Since there is little room on the front of the display to house a dedicated home button with an integrated fingerprint sensor on these new designs, Qualcomm is pushing its new solution which can be embedded within a display, metal or glass. For smartphone applications, these new ultrasonic-based fingerprint sensors can scan through an OLED display stack up to 1.2mm thick. In addition to being able to detect a heartbeat and blood flow (to improve the accuracy... Read more...
