The mechanics that Twitter's 'Direct Message' system has been using since launch fall into the category of 'love-it-or-hate-it'. The reason for that is that in order to receive a message from a follower, you must be following them. The problem here is obvious: You might not want to 'friend farm'; or, you may simply wish to keep your 'following' list clean so you only see posts on the site that you consider to be relevant. But picture a scenario where you're a legitimate user needing to get in touch with someone on the service - privately. Facebook's search for new sources of revenues continues unabated -- and this time, the company wants to target your own profile phtoos for inclusion in its database. That's a change from the previous system, in which users were only scanned if other people tagged them first. Your own profile photos weren't automatically added to the database in this fashion. According to Facebook, "Tag Suggest is a tool that helps Facebook users tag their friends in photographs more quickly and easily -- something people love to do on Facebook." Twitter has become a force all its own, and a recent partnership with Nielsen is proof that the social network has mainstream reach, too. Now, a Nielsen research report is suggesting that tweet count does indeed have a link to TV ratings. A new independent study by Nielsen provides, for the first time, statistical evidence of a two-way causal influence between broadcast TV tune-in for a program and the Twitter conversation around that program. The study used time series analysis to determine if Twitter activity drives increased tune-in rates for broadcast TV and if broadcast TV tune-in leads to increased Twitter activity. If you're an avid Twitter user, you're probably aware that a few kinks still exist in the system. In terms of apps, one is particularly glaring: Direct Messages that are opened and replied to on one device look as if they're unread on another device. As of today, that's changing. Oh Facebook - couldn't this have come at a better time? Mere weeks after news of NSA's PRISM project being leaked, which is said to involve tight integration with the likes of Facebook and other popular Web entities, we learn of a bug that caused six million user's worth of phone numbers and email addresses being exposed over the past year. The New York Times reports that the cause was a "technical bug", and so far, Facebook has seen no evidence that it was exploited or used maliciously. It would probably take most of us a few lifetimes to earn a billion dollars, but it evidently only takes a few days to officially spend it. The extravagant purchase of Tumblr by Yahoo has officially closed this week, making the site formally a Yahoo property. CEO Marissa Mayer is once again assuring users that Tumblr will continue to function as a separate business, led by CEO David Karp. According to Mayer, "Their product roadmap, their team, and tone will all remain the same as will their mission to empower creators and curators alike to do what they love best: create." Twitter has made no bones about its ambitions to become the go-to source when it comes to mapping out popularity of television programming, and now, Viacom + Twitter have announced a partnership to deliver social video advertising campaigns around the most popular shows and biggest events throughout Viacom's network portfolio. Remember that Yahoo! e-mail address you started in high school, but forgot to keep using as you entered the real world? Twitter has had more than its share of security breaches on its accounts of late, from the Wall Street Journal and New York Times to CBS to Burger King and Jeep, and now the social platform is addressing security by rolling out login authentication. In a blog post, Twitter’s product security team said, “We occasionally hear from people whose accounts have been compromised by email phishing schemes or a breach of password data elsewhere on the web. Of all the social networks that one might have expected to flop, Pinterest is probably in that list. But, what is lacks in convention it makes up for in uniqueness, and obviously the user base is just exploding. Now, those who use the service will find it to be even more useful. Nothing quite like a good, old-fashioned cat-fight between social networks, huh? That's evidently what's ongoing between Facebook and Path. If you haven't been watching, Path has been taking a lot of heat recently for spamming contact lists with invites to join. Essentially, Path users inadvertently spammed just about everyone in their address book in recent weeks, and Facebook took notice. Now, Facebook has blocked Path's access to FB's social graph, which will disallow Path's "Find Friends" feature from working with FB data. Do I look a little crazy to you? If I do, it's probably Facebook to thank, since I, and apparently many others, have "Internet addiction". Well, truth be told, I don't have an addiction to the extent that some do, as Dr. Uri Nitzan exposed in a paper published to the Israel Journal of Psychiatry and Related Sciences this past fall. Guess what? Instagram is getting more social. Hardly a surprise given that Facebook is the current parent, and there's hardly a better way to see that a piece of shared media goes viral than by enabling tagging. It wasn't too long ago that rumblings had Twitter pining for more users to simply use the Web instead of those third-party tools. Tweetbot, TweetDeck, etc. -- those aren't exactly Twitter's favorite things, strangely. Now, the social network has made it super difficult for new third-party clients to operate, thereby forcing users to either rely on a native tool (like the official Twitter iOS app), or the website. Believe it or not, Facebook is much more than a social network. It's an advertising company, a search company, a discovery company, and increasingly, an engineering company. It's quickly becoming obvious that one of Facebook's biggest strengths is its engineering muscle, and Facebook Home is proof of that. That's a huge, huge effort to fork Android, and while it was no doubt expensive to devote resources to doing it, it could grow the Facebook network tremendously in due time. In reality, it's of little surprise, as this is a group that lacks a typical hierarchy - it has no leader, and equal rights among all members. With every new boom on the Internet, there usually comes some sort of business that deals with it. In comes Facebook, and ads follow. In come sold-out arenas, and in comes StubHub. You get the gist. With Twitter, however, the business that has followed hasn't entirely been straight-and-narrow.
