For a short period of time, it appeared as though OnePlus had scored a big victory in the smartphone wars, having apparently negotiated a deal to be the first phone maker to implement Qualcomm's new flagship Snapdragon 855 processor into an upcoming handset. OnePlus was to be the first to feature the new chip, the company's CEO Pete Lau announced on stage at Qualcomm's event in Hawaii. Unfortunately for OnePlus, something got lost in translation. The original slides that OnePlus put together for Qualcomm's Tech Summit said the handset OnePlus planned to release in 2019 would be "among the first"... Read more...
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit is currently underway in Maui, Hawaii, and we are lucky enough to be in attendance. During this yesterday’s opening keynote address, Qualcomm officially announced its upcoming Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform and today the company provided much more technical detail on the platform. In addition to showcasing its own technologies, however, Qualcomm also brought out an array of partners to talk about the impending 5G wireless roll-out. Over the last couple of days, representatives from AT&T, Verizon, BT Group, One Plus, and Samsung all took to the stage... Read more...
Yesterday in Maui, Qualcomm provided a few brief details on its upcoming Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform SoC. The Snapdragon 855 will be powering the majority of 2019's Android flagship phones and will pair with Qualcomm's first-generation Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem and the company's all-new 3D Sonic Sensor under-the-display fingerprint reader.  Today, Qualcomm is spilling nearly all the beans with respect to its new high-end SoC, and it's quite impressive. As previously rumored, the Snapdragon 855's Kryo 485 processor retains the octa-core hierarchy, but its makeup has changed. This... Read more...
The time has come for a new generation of Snapdragon SoCs for mobile devices, and Qualcomm used its Snapdragon Technology Summit to announce its latest flagship chip. Meet the Snapdragon 855, which is the latest mobile SoC to be built on 7nm process tech (following the Huawei Kirin 980 and the Apple A12/A12X), and promises unmatched performance and efficiency for the scores of flagship Android phones and other devices that will launch in 2019. Qualcomm isn't providing a lot of intricate details on the Snapdragon 855 today -- those specifics will come at a later date -- but the... Read more...
Performance figures for the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 SoC for flagship Android smartphones have been dripping from a leaky faucet in recent weeks. We've seen AnTuTu figures -- which even manage to outpace the might Apple A12 Bionic -- along with impressive AI scores thanks to the dedicated neural processing unit (NPU). Today, we're getting a look at raw CPU performance thanks to Snapdragon 8150 benchmarks that have been posted to Geekbench. WCCFTech was the first to discover the figures, which shows the Snapdragon 8150 pulling down a single-core score... While Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 may be the "new hotness" for 2018 smartphones, many are already turning their attention to the next chip in the pipeline. Up until this point, it's been rumored that the next entry into the flagship SoC line would be the Snapdragon 855. However, we're now learning this might not be the case after all and that Qualcomm is adopting a new naming scheme. While the chip still carries the codename "Hana", WinFuture is reporting that it will actually be called Snapdragon 8150 when it first hits smartphones in early 2019. So why the name change? Well, it's... Read more...
A company called Turing (not to be confused with the rumored name of NVIDIA's next-generation consumer GPU) is taking the concept of a dual-screen smartphone the next level. Turing introduced the HubblePhone, a futuristic device that it is aiming to release in a couple of years. To Turing's credit, the HubblePhone concept certainly looks unique. The HubblePhone is a modern take on an old concept, that being the flip phone from years past. It does not look dated, however, but sort of snazzy if you are into that sort of thing. The phone comes with a bunch of lofty promises too, with Turing saying... Read more...
Qualcomm is very much an active player in the mobile space with its Snapdragon chipsets, which are commonly found in Android phones and tablets. At present, the Snapdragon 845 is Qualcomm's flagship mobile processor. It is built on a 10-nanometer manufacturing process, is fast (for a mobile part), and has been around for several months. The chip might also be old news pretty soon—there is a listing on Geekbench that suggests Qualcomm is already mass producing its next flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 855. The database entry points to an unnamed Xiaomi handset with an "SDM855 for ARM64" underneath... Read more...
The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have been on the market for just a few months, and the Galaxy Note 9 has yet to be announced. However, the rumor mill is already churning, digging up information on the upcoming Galaxy S10, which should make its debut early next year. According to a new report coming out of South Korea, Samsung is planning something revolutionary for the Galaxy S10, which is being developed under the codename "Beyond". For reference, the Galaxy S8 held the codename "Dream", while the Galaxy S9 was codenamed "Star". The Galaxy S10 will mark the 10th anniversary... Read more...
We are still waiting for Samsung to officially launch its Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus handsets, but be that as it may, there is already chatter about what comes after in the company's flagship smartphone space. The Galaxy S10 rumors have begun in earnest, and word around the online water cooler is that it will wield a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC (system-on-chip) with a speedy Snapdragon X24 LTE modem. There is not a whole lot to go on at this early stage. However, a Twitter post by Roland Quandt, an active leaker (or "finder," as he prefers) of unreleased mobile devices claims that Qualcomm's... The ink has barely dried on the press release announcing Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845, and there are already rumors swirling about its eventual successor: the Snapdragon 855. The Snapdragon 845 is built on a refined version of Samsung's 10nm FinFET process (an evolution of the tech used for the Snapdragon 835), however, the Snapdragon 855 will be built on new 7nm process technology. Whereas Samsung has been responsible for manufacturing both the Snapdragon 835 and Snapdragon 845, Nikkei is reporting that Qualcomm has selected TSMC to produce the Snapdragon 855. TMSC is also reportedly being tapped... Read more...
