Apple can’t be happy about how leaky its supply chain and its own internal operations are right now. Thanks to supplier leaks and slow drips from its own HQ, nearly every aspect of its next generation iPhones has been revealed. The latest pieces of the puzzle that has been confirmed by the iOS 11 Gold Master (GM) leak are the names of the three smartphones that will be announced on Tuesday: iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (confirming previous rumors). As you might expect, iPhone X is what we have all been referring to as the iPhone 8 for the past year. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are what have been previously referred to as the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus. This bit of name sleuthing... Read more...
The iPhone rumors and leaks are coming in hot and heavy, even more so lately as we get closer to Apple's official unveiling next week. One of the biggest reveals dropped as we headed into the weekend. Someone at Apple (presumably) leaked out the company's forthcoming iOS 11 GM code. This is the same version that is being installed on whatever iPhone devices Apple is planning to launch, and it tells us quite a bit about what to expect. To prevent confusion, from this point forward we will refer to Apple's next flagship as the iPhone 8. This could also end up being called the iPhone X (pronounced iPhone ten), as was previously rumored, to honor the 10-year anniversary of the iPhone. But since most... Read more...
It's looking more and more likely that the next flagship iPhone will have a price tag that starts at around $1,000. This shouldn't come as a surprise given the rising costs of flagship smartphones, and expensive components (like the OLED display panel) that Apple has to factor in and still enjoy its enviable profit margins. Now, some analysts are suggesting that Apple might go the bundle route to make those who might otherwise be averse to spending $1,000 on a smartphone more receptive. Analysts for Barclays claim that Apple might include a one-year subscription to Apple Music and 200GB of iCloud storage bundled in with the iPhone 8. One-year of Apple Music costs $120, while 200GB of iCloud storage... Read more...
It is widely expected that Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 (or iPhone X, depending on who you ask), will be one of the most expensive flagship smartphones ever released by a major manufacturer (the new Galaxy Note 8 retails for roughly $950). Reports peg that starting price of the iPhone 8 at around $1,000, and today, we're being clued in to at least one contributor the lofty price tag: the OLED display panel. According to well-respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Samsung is the sole supplier of the OLED display panels that are used by Apple on the iPhone 8. The only other major manufacturer of OLED panels for smartphones is LG, but that company reportedly doesn't have the capacity nor the... Read more...
Confirming reports from earlier this month, Apple sent out invites this afternoon to the press confirming that its next keynote address will take place on September 12th. The event will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater, which is situated on the brand-new Apple Park campus. This is expected to be a packed event, as Apple will not only pull the wraps off the highly anticipated iPhone 8, but also new version of the Apple TV and Apple Watch. This will also be the launching point for Apple’s iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra releases. But of course, most eyes will be on the iPhone 8, which is expected to feature a near bezel-less OLED display that is larger than iPhone 7 Plus, but with a form-factor... Read more...
Is that an iPhone 8 in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me? That seems to be question on the minds of many Apple watchers today. It’s not often that people would examine or even care about what Apple CEO Tim Cook is wearing, but his tweet this morning announcing his visit to manufacturing partner CTS had people focused on the bulge in his pants. No, not that kind of bulge, but the one in his right pants pocket. You can see what appears to be the outline of a narrow and tall smartphone — one that adheres closely to the overall shape of the iPhone 8 that we’ve seen making the rounds on the internet in renders for the past six months. The proportions seem to favor that of an iPhone... Read more...
Today is Samsung’s time to shine in the spotlight with the launch of the Galaxy Note 8 Android flagship. However, that isn’t stopping the Apple rumor mill from working overtime, with the latest report hinting at three new storage tiers for the upcoming iPhone 8. For a little background information, the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are available in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB storage capacities, with the iPhone 7 Plus 256GB SKU topping out at $969. According to a Weibo posting, the iPhone 8 will double up those storage capacities across the board to 64GB, 256GB and 512GB respectively. That’s right, half a terabyte of storage on a smartphone is absolutely bonkers. However, some might ask why the... Read more...
The lead-up to the launch of the iPhone 8 has been especially fruitful this year. In fact, we would say that the design and feature leaks of upcoming products has been unprecedented thanks in part to Apple’s own HomePod firmware leak. Today, we’re getting further confirmation about the arrival of an Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE. Venerable Apple insider Mark Gurman first revealed the existence of the LTE Apple Watch earlier this month. The very next day, references to the next generation Apple Watch with LTE were found in the leaked HomePod firmware. Today, CNBC has corroborated those reports, saying that instead of using a traditional nanoSIM like the iPhone, the Apple Watch will instead use... Read more...
How much secret information can you siphon out of one accidental firmware leak? Apparently, a lot according to prominent iOS developers that have been hammering away at the HomePod firmware that was mistakenly posted to Apple’s servers. The unreleased iPhone 8 has been the most frequent target of developers’ attention, and two fresh leaks have sprung. For starters, it is believed that Apple has completely give up on its Touch ID fingerprint authentication with the iPhone 8. That means that Apple will have to rely on the infrared cameras to scan your face to unlock the device, and manage passwords used for logging into apps and websites. Developer Guilherme Rambo has also discovered hooks that... Read more...
It has often been rumored that the iPhone 8 will ship with a front-facing 3D sensor to replace the Touch ID button, which would bring facial recognition to Apple's next flagship handset. However, that is not the only thing the 3D sensor could be used for. While digging around some source code, a Twitter user found lines of text suggesting that the iPhone 8 will silence notifications when peering at the OLED display. Silencing notifications would be a subtle feature upgrade, but also one that makes a lot of sense if and when the technology is available. It is an example of the kinds of doors having a 3D sensor with facial recognition technology can open. Whether or not it comes to fruition remains... Read more...
Apple is going to have to pull out something major from its sleeve in order to surprise anyone with its forthcoming iPhone 8. Leak after online leak has revealed almost everything there is to know about the iPhone 8, except for what it might look like when surrounding by a protective case. Oh wait, that has now been leaked too, and from a highly reliable source (Evan Blass, otherwise known by his Twitter handle @evleaks), no less! Make no mistake, Apple is a master at controlled leaks, as it drums up hype and excitement. It gets people talking about a handset long before its launch, including chatter from industry analysts. Apple is not alone in using this strategy, but perhaps no other company... Read more...
Remember when mobile phones were used primarily for making actual voice calls while on the go? Pshaw! These days we use our handsets for all kinds of things, and for some, they are used most often for snapping pictures and recording videos. Smartphone makers have responded by using higher quality camera sensors, and with the iPhone 8 that is just around the bend, there is evidence to suggest that both the front and rear cameras will be able to record 4K resolution video at 60 frames per second. Image Source: Forbes via Gordon Kelly and Nodus Apple has not said a peep about the iPhone 8's camera capabilities, though the possible upgrade in functionality was discovered by digging through lines...   Apple’s uncharacteristic HomePod firmware leak continues to bear fruit pertaining to the upcoming iPhone 8 release. We’ve already learned quite a lot about Apple’s next-generation flagship including the shape of the device (at least from the front) and its front-facing infrared cameras that are used for facial recognition, but now we’re learning a little bit more about the cameras that will be employed on the back of the smartphone. Developer Guilherme Rambo has uncovered references to a feature called “Smart Camera” lurking within the HomePod’s firmware. This feature is expected to use artificial intelligence (AI) and object recognition to determine what type of scene is being represented... Read more...
In what is likely the biggest internal Apple leak prior to release since the iPhone 4, developers are still uncovering details on the iPhone 8 thanks to a premature firmware release. In this case, Apple accidentally posted the firmware of the unreleased HomePod AI smart speaker to its developer site, after which it was quickly dissected. The newest details uncovered regarding the iPhone 8 include references in iOS to a split status bar. Previous iPhones have a traditional status bur that runs the length of the top edge of the screen where you’ll find information like the current wireless carrier, signal strength Wi-Fi/Bluetooth status and battery indicator. However, the iPhone 8 has a... Read more...
