When it comes to Apple's latest flagship smartphone, the iPhone X, it feels like in many respects, the company is catching up to features that have long been featured on Android devices. Minimal display bezels, OLED display panels and wireless charging have all been in the Android domain for a few generations (or more). One particular feature that is just now being exploited by the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X is wireless charging. Apple went with the Qi wireless standard when it comes to wireless (inductive) charging, but only supports 5W charging in the most current public builds of iOS 11. That will change, however, with the arrival of iOS 11.2. MacRumors was able to confirm via representatives... Read more...
Best Buy did not earn itself any brownie points by overcharging customers for Apple's newly minted iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X handsets, each of which carried a $100 premium for the privilege of buying one from the electronics chain instead of direct from Apple, and its explanation as to why it has now pulled the unlocked SKUs from its store shelves is just lame. Summed up, the marked up phones did not sell in part because of "noise in the media" and "confusion" with its customers. Really, Best Buy? "Although there was clearly demand for the un-activated iPhone X, selling it that way cost more money, causing some confusion with our customers and noise in the media," Best Buy spokeswoman... Apple's iPhone X was making news well before the device was anywhere close to official, with speculation on what features the smartphone would offer running rampant. Now that we know all about the device down to its cost and when it will launch, the real story is just how many people will fork over the loot to buy what is one of the most expensive smartphones ever sold at $999. A new survey had made the rounds that claims iPhone X demand will be substantial, but that survey says demand won't be exceptional. The report comes from a survey by brokerage Bernstein, and it found that about a quarter of the respondents planned to buy the iPhone X. There has been anticipation for sure surrounding the... Apple generally sees a significant uptick in iPhone sales after releasing a brand new model, which is usually reflected in quarterly earnings reports. We will know in time if that is the case with its iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models. In the meantime, wireless carriers in the United States and Canada have noted a slowdown in upgrades to the iPhone 8 series, with one carrier even deeming demand as being "anemic." Joe Natale, chief executive officer of Rogers Communication, the largest wireless carrier in Canada, is the one who said that about the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. However, Natale also noted that anticipation for Apple's iPhone X with an all-screen organic light emitting diode (OLED)... Read more...
When Apple announced the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in September, it was just more of the same for many people. While it features a faster processor and wireless charging, it still offers pretty much the same experience that you would expect from the year-old iPhone 7 family, while looking much like 2014's iPhone 6. It looks as though much of the Apple faithful are holding out for the upcoming iPhone X, and a new report suggests that the folks in Cupertino know this to be the case. Taiwan-based Economic Times says that Apple will dramatically cut iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus production by as much as 50 percent in November and December to leave resources available for the more expensive and likely... Last month, Apple introduced a new family of smartphones to appease the legions of iPhone users around the globe. The first products to take the stage with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which are enhanced versions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus that debuted last year. The real "star" of the show, however, was the iPhone X, which is an all-new model with minimal bezels, Face ID and an OLED display. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were first made available in the retail market on September 22nd, and according to industry analysts, customers haven't exactly been won over by the new phones. KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst John Vinh says that surveys conducted with wireless carriers show that... Read more...
The ongoing debate between Apple and Samsung might never be settled—some people prefer iPhone handsets and iOS, others are big time fans of Galaxy devices and Android. Each side has their pros and cons, though if you purchased a Galaxy Note 8 and are looking for bragging rights over the iPhone 8, you can point to durability. After putting both hands through a series of drop tests, the folks at PhoneBuff found Samsung's handset to be the tougher of the two...barely. What makes this face off interesting is that both the iPhone 8 and Galaxy Note 8 are using an all-glass back design. Samsung has actually been using glass backs for quite some time now, while Apple introduced it as a highly touted... Read more...
Back in the good old days, it used to be rather trivial to replace components on many smartphones. If your battery was dead, you just popped off the back panel and installed a fresh one. Cracked display? Loosen a few screws, lift up the display panel, remove a few flex cables and you're good to go (i.e., iPhone 4/4s). However, as smartphones have become more complex (and laden with glue and more intricate components), those easy repairs have become more difficult to complete on your own. With that in mind, Apple is telling users that they are better off not trying to fix new smartphones like the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus using components that they source. This is probably not the kind of commentary... Read more...
It looks as though the higher costs of today’s flagship smartphones are being complemented by repair/replacement costs that are also soaring through the roof. In Apple land, the AppleCare+ extended warranty program received a price hike to coincide with the launch of the new iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. AppleCare+ costs $129 for the iPhone 8 and $149 for the iPhone 8 Plus. If you purchase an iPhone X next month, AppleCare+ will cost a staggering $199. But what is really baffling some Apple fans is how much glass replacements will cost under AppleCare+. Apple will replace the front glass on your damaged iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus for $29 under AppleCare+, which is already rather tenuous... Read more...
The iPhone 8 is out and that means it is time for a teardown. To ensure a timely dissection of Apple's latest generation smartphone, the technology surgeons at iFixIt hopped on a plane and headed to the Circuitwise headquarters in Sydney, Australia, where the local time is a full 14 hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone, and 17 hours in front of the Pacific Time Zone. Talk about commitment! While the location of this latest smartphone operation may have changed, the process of tearing into an iPhone device has not, at least for the most part. It starts with the removal of pentalobe screws and then heating up the display to loosen the adhesive and free up the waterproof seals. After slicing through... Read more...
In the aftermath of Apple's introduction of three new iPhone models early last week, we got our first taste of Apple’s A11 Bionic processor domination via a leaked Geekbench score. The results showed a device with six cores and a "mere" 3GB of RAM absolutely killing it with single- and multi-core scores of 4061 and 9959 respectively. Now that the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X are no longer a secret, benchmark scores for all three are beginning to make their way to Geekbench. These new results confirm what we all witnessed last week, and prove that all three devices pack considerable more processing muscle than what is available from the current Qualcomm Snapdragon 835-powered Android competition.... A little less than a week ago, Apple introduced the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which bring meaningful upgrades to their immediate predecessors, and the all-new iPhone X, which represents a complete rethink of iPhone flagship design. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus retail for $699 and $799 respectively, while the iPhone X hits a new high (for Apple) with a base price of $999. Sprint understands that many of its customers would probably love to upgrade to a new iPhone 8, but have sticker shock at the price tag (even when split into monthly payments). So, the fourth-place wireless carrier is looking to soften the blow if you have a newer smartphone to trade-in (and meet all of the requirements for... Read more...
With all the hoopla surrounding the iPhone X yesterday, it's easy to forget that Apple also announced two additional smartphones: the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. While the iPhone X has a starting price that is higher than any iPhone before it -- $999 -- the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are priced more in "normal" flagship territory, starting at $699 and $799 respectively.Of course, there are some trade-offs, but not enough to keep these smartphones from being out of contention if you're already invested the Apple ecosystem. For starters, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus use the same A11 Bionic processor that powers the iPhone X (along with its Apple-designed, tri-core GPU). As you can see from our... Read more...
After months of anticipation, the moment has finally arrived for Apple fans around the globe. The iPhone X (pronounces iPhone Ten) has just been announced, and for better or worse, it's just as we expected. If you've been following HotHardware at all over the past few months (and especially during the past week), then you already know much about the flagship smartphone that was supposed to remain a closely guarded secret until today. For starters, the new iPhone X features a 5.8-inch OLED display called Super Retina Display, with a resolution of 2136x1125 (458ppi), which is a nice upgrade from the LCD panels used on all iPhones to date. This dwarfs the 4.7-inch display on the iPhone 7 and... Read more...
