When Apple announced the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in September, it was just more of the same for many people. While it features a faster processor and wireless charging, it still offers pretty much the same experience that you would expect from the year-old iPhone 7 family, while looking much like 2014's iPhone 6. It looks as though much of the Apple faithful are holding out for the upcoming iPhone X, and a new report suggests that the folks in Cupertino know this to be the case. Taiwan-based Economic Times says that Apple will dramatically cut iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus production by as much... Read more...
Last month, Apple introduced a new family of smartphones to appease the legions of iPhone users around the globe. The first products to take the stage with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which are enhanced versions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus that debuted last year. The real "star" of the show, however, was the iPhone X, which is an all-new model with minimal bezels, Face ID and an OLED display. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were first made available in the retail market on September 22nd, and according to industry analysts, customers haven't exactly been won over by the new phones. The ongoing debate between Apple and Samsung might never be settled—some people prefer iPhone handsets and iOS, others are big time fans of Galaxy devices and Android. Each side has their pros and cons, though if you purchased a Galaxy Note 8 and are looking for bragging rights over the iPhone 8, you can point to durability. After putting both hands through a series of drop tests, the folks at PhoneBuff found Samsung's handset to be the tougher of the two...barely. What makes this face off interesting is that both the iPhone 8 and Galaxy Note 8 are using an all-glass back design. Samsung has actually... Read more...
Back in the good old days, it used to be rather trivial to replace components on many smartphones. If your battery was dead, you just popped off the back panel and installed a fresh one. Cracked display? Loosen a few screws, lift up the display panel, remove a few flex cables and you're good to go (i.e., iPhone 4/4s). However, as smartphones have become more complex (and laden with glue and more intricate components), those easy repairs have become more difficult to complete on your own. With that in mind, Apple is telling users that they are better off not trying to fix new smartphones like the... Read more...
It looks as though the higher costs of today’s flagship smartphones are being complemented by repair/replacement costs that are also soaring through the roof. In Apple land, the AppleCare+ extended warranty program received a price hike to coincide with the launch of the new iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. AppleCare+ costs $129 for the iPhone 8 and $149 for the iPhone 8 Plus. If you purchase an iPhone X next month, AppleCare+ will cost a staggering $199. But what is really baffling some Apple fans is how much glass replacements will cost under AppleCare+. Apple will replace the front glass... Read more...
The iPhone 8 is out and that means it is time for a teardown. To ensure a timely dissection of Apple's latest generation smartphone, the technology surgeons at iFixIt hopped on a plane and headed to the Circuitwise headquarters in Sydney, Australia, where the local time is a full 14 hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone, and 17 hours in front of the Pacific Time Zone. Talk about commitment! While the location of this latest smartphone operation may have changed, the process of tearing into an iPhone device has not, at least for the most part. It starts with the removal of pentalobe screws and then... Read more...
In the aftermath of Apple's introduction of three new iPhone models early last week, we got our first taste of Apple’s A11 Bionic processor domination via a leaked Geekbench score. The results showed a device with six cores and a "mere" 3GB of RAM absolutely killing it with single- and multi-core scores of 4061 and 9959 respectively. Now that the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X are no longer a secret, benchmark scores for all three are beginning to make their way to Geekbench. These new results confirm what we all witnessed last week, and prove that all three devices pack considerable more... Read more...
A little less than a week ago, Apple introduced the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which bring meaningful upgrades to their immediate predecessors, and the all-new iPhone X, which represents a complete rethink of iPhone flagship design. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus retail for $699 and $799 respectively, while the iPhone X hits a new high (for Apple) with a base price of $999. Sprint understands that many of its customers would probably love to upgrade to a new iPhone 8, but have sticker shock at the price tag (even when split into monthly payments). So, the fourth-place wireless carrier is looking... Read more...
With all the hoopla surrounding the iPhone X yesterday, it's easy to forget that Apple also announced two additional smartphones: the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. While the iPhone X has a starting price that is higher than any iPhone before it -- $999 -- the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are priced more in "normal" flagship territory, starting at $699 and $799 respectively.Of course, there are some trade-offs, but not enough to keep these smartphones from being out of contention if you're already invested the Apple ecosystem. For starters, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus use the same A11 Bionic processor... Read more...
After months of anticipation, the moment has finally arrived for Apple fans around the globe. The iPhone X (pronounces iPhone Ten) has just been announced, and for better or worse, it's just as we expected. If you've been following HotHardware at all over the past few months (and especially during the past week), then you already know much about the flagship smartphone that was supposed to remain a closely guarded secret until today. For starters, the new iPhone X features a 5.8-inch OLED display called Super Retina Display, with a resolution of 2136x1125 (458ppi), which is a nice upgrade... Read more...
Apple can’t be happy about how leaky its supply chain and its own internal operations are right now. Thanks to supplier leaks and slow drips from its own HQ, nearly every aspect of its next generation iPhones has been revealed. The latest pieces of the puzzle that has been confirmed by the iOS 11 Gold Master (GM) leak are the names of the three smartphones that will be announced on Tuesday: iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (confirming previous rumors). As you might expect, iPhone X is what we have all been referring to as the iPhone 8 for the past year. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are what... Read more...
The iPhone rumors and leaks are coming in hot and heavy, even more so lately as we get closer to Apple's official unveiling next week. One of the biggest reveals dropped as we headed into the weekend. Someone at Apple (presumably) leaked out the company's forthcoming iOS 11 GM code. This is the same version that is being installed on whatever iPhone devices Apple is planning to launch, and it tells us quite a bit about what to expect. To prevent confusion, from this point forward we will refer to Apple's next flagship as the iPhone 8. This could also end up being called the iPhone X (pronounced... Read more...
It's looking more and more likely that the next flagship iPhone will have a price tag that starts at around $1,000. This shouldn't come as a surprise given the rising costs of flagship smartphones, and expensive components (like the OLED display panel) that Apple has to factor in and still enjoy its enviable profit margins. Now, some analysts are suggesting that Apple might go the bundle route to make those who might otherwise be averse to spending $1,000 on a smartphone more receptive. Analysts for Barclays claim that Apple might include a one-year subscription to Apple Music and 200GB of iCloud... Read more...
It is widely expected that Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 (or iPhone X, depending on who you ask), will be one of the most expensive flagship smartphones ever released by a major manufacturer (the new Galaxy Note 8 retails for roughly $950). Reports peg that starting price of the iPhone 8 at around $1,000, and today, we're being clued in to at least one contributor the lofty price tag: the OLED display panel. According to well-respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Samsung is the sole supplier of the OLED display panels that are used by Apple on the iPhone 8. The only other major manufacturer...
