One rumor that absolutely refuses to die is the pending launch of a successor to the original iPhone SE (Special Edition), which came out in 2016 and was discontinued a year later. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reckons it will finally see the light of day in early 2020, and he has some interesting predictions about the hardware makeup of the unannounced handset. His time frame for the iPhone SE 2 matches a report from Nikkei earlier this month—as the story went, Apple hopes a lower cost iPhone model will scoop up some market share in China, where Huawei and other companies are doing well. The report said Apple had not settled on a name, but was viewing it internally as a successor to the iPhone... Read more...
Apple is now having to face the music with respect to iPhone sale in Germany. Earlier this year, Qualcomm won an injunction against Apple for patent infringement due to the Intel 4G LTE modems used in its iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8/iPhone 8 Plus devices. The injunction resulted in Apple having to pull the iPhones in question off store shelves in Germany. Now, we're learning that Apple will be allowed to sell the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 in Germany, but there's just one big stipulation: the company has to use Qualcomm modems instead of its favored Intel counterparts. This is an excruciating blow to Apple, as the company has purposely avoided using Qualcomm components... Read more...
Yesterday, Qualcomm put up €1.34 billion in security bonds in order to enforce a German court ruling in its favor made in late December regarding a bitter patent dispute with Apple. The patents pertained to "power savings technology" used in modern smartphones call envelope tracking. Today, Apple has been forced to pull its iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 from its own stores in Germany. Apple's German website was the first to boot the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8, but it remains to be seen if/when other retailers will follow suit. For its part, Qualcomm claims that the court order also covers third-party retailers: Apple was ordered to cease the sale, offer for sale and importation for sale of... Read more...
If you're firmly entrenched in the Apple camp and just so happen to be part of the T-Mobile family, the third-place wireless carrier is currently running an offer that will get you up to $750 off the price of a new smartphone. Although T-Mobile hasn't announced an end-date for the promotion, it's likely not going to last too far into the new year. As is currently stands, you can get either the iPhone 8 or the iPhone XR for free with the current promo. With more expensive phones like the iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max, you'll get a maximum of $750 off the purchase price. For example, you can get an iPhone XS for $999 minus $750 in monthly bill credits bringing your... Read more...
Qualcomm is looking to box Apple in with regards to the ongoing legal battle between the two companies. Earlier this month, Qualcomm won an injunction in China, which should have resulted in an import/sales ban on every iPhone made dating back to the iPhone 6S/iPhone 6S Plus. However, Apple has largely ignored that ruling, saying that a new iOS 12 update provides a workaround for the two Qualcomm patents in question. Today, however, Apple was dealt another blow, this time in a German court. In this latest chapter in the legal drama, Qualcomm successfully argued that 4G LTE modems produced by Intel and components produced by Qorvo for the iPhone infringe... Read more...
Apple is slow to admit that its devices have any problems, but occasionally iPhones have serious issues. The iPhone X has had problems with Face ID that required some devices to have a rear camera replacement, for instance. Apple has announced that it has found an issue in some iPhone 8 smartphones that could be causing some users to be very frustrated. If your iPhone 8 is experiencing unexpected restarts, frozen screen, or won’t turn on you may have a bad logic board. Apple says that it has found that a "very small percentage" of iPhone 8 smartphones contain logic boards with a manufacturing defect. That defect causes the aforementioned problems, and Apple says that if your device is eligible,... Read more...
Two weeks ago, we brought you a report that that confirmed that the iOS 11.3 update was bricking certain iPhone 8 smartphones. To be more specific, the update disabled touch functionality on iPhone 8s that were fixed using third-party displays. Without touch support, these smartphones were pretty much useless. “A lot of people crack their phone screens. Yet, Apple doesn’t make the replacement screens available to the thousands of repair shops that people take those phones to in order to be fixed," said U.S. PIRG’s Nathan Proctor, Director of their campaign for the Right to Repair. It appears that Apple has heard that message loud and clear, and has resolved... Read more...
Yet another day, yet another report of Apple prematurely sending an iPhone to an early grave. Last month, Apple released iOS 11.3, which brought a number of feature updates including a new battery health meter and new Animoji. However, some iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus users were greeted with an unexpected and infuriated side effect of the iOS 11.3 update: touch support on their devices immediately ceased to function. The problem stems from users that sought third-party repairs for their broken iPhone 8 displays. It's almost an inevitability that you will at some point drop your smartphone, resulting in a cracked display -- iPhone 8 users aren’t immune from these realities. According... Read more...
Yesterday, Virgin Mobile UK let it slip that Apple would be announcing new, limited edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhones today. And right on cue, the folks in Cupertino this morning revealed (PRODUCT)RED versions of both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Unlike previous releases of Apple's (PRODUCT)RED iPhones, the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus ditch the white front in favor of black. After all the complaining that Apple endured with last year's (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 7 release, it's good to see that the company actually listened to its critics. We must admit, it does look farbetter with the red/black color scheme. The only odd design choice is the silver Apple logo on the back -- perhaps black would... Read more...
It appears that Apple has a bit of a problem on its hands when it comes to one of its repair centers. The repair facility, which is located in Elk Grove, California, has reportedly made 1,600 "false alarm" phone calls from its location since October 2017. To put that in perspective, 911 operators have been fielding as many as 20 calls per day from the facility that repairs and refurbishes Apple devices. “We’re able to see quickly where the call is coming from, so when we get one from Apple, the address will come up with their location,” said police dispatcher Jamie Hudson. Given the number of calls that have emanated from the location, 911 operators are able to ascertain that... Read more...
Analysts have been sour on Apple's flagship iPhone X device, slashing their sales forecasts on reports of lower-than-expected demand. Whatever the official tally, however, it did not stop Apple from posting another record quarter. The Cupertino company raked in $88.3 billion in revenue during its fiscal 2018 first quarter ended December 30, 2017, a jump of 13 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago and an all-time high. Quarterly earnings hit $3.89 per diluted share, up 16 percent and also a record. Apple's new iPhone handsets drove those record-setting figures, including its iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. And with regards to the iPhone X specifically, Apple CEO Tim Cook said... Read more...
Over the past few weeks, iOS enthusiasts that have clung to the practice of jailbreaking have anxiously awaited a public software release to "unleash the beast" so to speak. The first proof-of-concept untethered jailbreak was announced earlier this month by Alibaba’s Pandora Labs, which was based on the work of Google Project Zero researcher Ian Beer. Today, there's a fully-fledged jailbreak that has been released for Apple's current generation of smartphones, which include the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X (and all other 64-bit iOS devices for that matter). The jailbreak, which is called LiberiOS, was developed by Jonathan Levin. There are some downsides to this jailbreak, however,... Read more...
The iPhone X might be the flagship of Apple's smartphone family, but that doesn't mean that it comes out on top in Consumer Reports' latest round of testing. In fact, the iPhone X ranked behind two current generation flagship smartphones from Samsung and two of its newer iPhone siblings. First, let's start off with the iPhone X's positives, which include its gorgeous 5.8-inch OLED display (which is manufactured by Samsung). It was praised for its deep black tones and minimal clarity degradation when viewing the display from off angles. Although the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were also deemed to have excellent displays, the iPhone X was shown to have a "significant difference" in quality (in its... Read more...
If you're looking to score a couple of today's hottest flagship smartphones, T-Mobile just might have an offer right up your alley. The company is running a massive Buy One, Get One Free (BOGO) campaign, which is kicking off tomorrow, November 17th. The third-place wireless carrier in the United States has some of best, newly-released smartphones available if you don't mind dealing with a rebate. Under T-Mobile's new promotion, you have to purchase both smartphones using an Equipment Installment Plan (you also have to add at least one new line), and you will receive the price of the second smartphone (of equal or lesser value) in the form of a rebate. T-Mobile isn't discriminating against its... Read more...
