Apple is slow to admit that its devices have any problems, but occasionally iPhones have serious issues. The iPhone X has had problems with Face ID that required some devices to have a rear camera replacement, for instance. Apple has announced that it has found an issue in some iPhone 8 smartphones that could be causing some users to be very frustrated. If your iPhone 8 is experiencing unexpected restarts, frozen screen, or won’t turn on you may have a bad logic board. Apple says that it has found that a "very small percentage" of iPhone 8 smartphones contain logic boards with a manufacturing... Read more...
Two weeks ago, we brought you a report that that confirmed that the iOS 11.3 update was bricking certain iPhone 8 smartphones. To be more specific, the update disabled touch functionality on iPhone 8s that were fixed using third-party displays. Without touch support, these smartphones were pretty much useless. “A lot of people crack their phone screens. Yet, Apple doesn’t make the replacement screens available to the thousands of repair shops that people take those phones to in order to be fixed," said U.S. PIRG’s Nathan Proctor, Director of their campaign for the Right... Yet another day, yet another report of Apple prematurely sending an iPhone to an early grave. Last month, Apple released iOS 11.3, which brought a number of feature updates including a new battery health meter and new Animoji. However, some iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus users were greeted with an unexpected and infuriated side effect of the iOS 11.3 update: touch support on their devices immediately ceased to function. The problem stems from users that sought third-party repairs for their broken iPhone 8 displays. It's almost an inevitability that you will at some point drop your smartphone,... Read more...
Yesterday, Virgin Mobile UK let it slip that Apple would be announcing new, limited edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhones today. And right on cue, the folks in Cupertino this morning revealed (PRODUCT)RED versions of both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Unlike previous releases of Apple's (PRODUCT)RED iPhones, the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus ditch the white front in favor of black. After all the complaining that Apple endured with last year's (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 7 release, it's good to see that the company actually listened to its critics. We must admit, it does look farbetter with the red/black... Read more...
It appears that Apple has a bit of a problem on its hands when it comes to one of its repair centers. The repair facility, which is located in Elk Grove, California, has reportedly made 1,600 "false alarm" phone calls from its location since October 2017. To put that in perspective, 911 operators have been fielding as many as 20 calls per day from the facility that repairs and refurbishes Apple devices. “We’re able to see quickly where the call is coming from, so when we get one from Apple, the address will come up with their location,” said police dispatcher Jamie Hudson. Given... Read more...
Analysts have been sour on Apple's flagship iPhone X device, slashing their sales forecasts on reports of lower-than-expected demand. Whatever the official tally, however, it did not stop Apple from posting another record quarter. The Cupertino company raked in $88.3 billion in revenue during its fiscal 2018 first quarter ended December 30, 2017, a jump of 13 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago and an all-time high. Quarterly earnings hit $3.89 per diluted share, up 16 percent and also a record. Apple's new iPhone handsets drove those record-setting figures, including its iPhone 8,... Read more...
Over the past few weeks, iOS enthusiasts that have clung to the practice of jailbreaking have anxiously awaited a public software release to "unleash the beast" so to speak. The first proof-of-concept untethered jailbreak was announced earlier this month by Alibaba’s Pandora Labs, which was based on the work of Google Project Zero researcher Ian Beer. Today, there's a fully-fledged jailbreak that has been released for Apple's current generation of smartphones, which include the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X (and all other 64-bit iOS devices for that matter). The jailbreak, which is... Read more...
The iPhone X might be the flagship of Apple's smartphone family, but that doesn't mean that it comes out on top in Consumer Reports' latest round of testing. In fact, the iPhone X ranked behind two current generation flagship smartphones from Samsung and two of its newer iPhone siblings. First, let's start off with the iPhone X's positives, which include its gorgeous 5.8-inch OLED display (which is manufactured by Samsung). It was praised for its deep black tones and minimal clarity degradation when viewing the display from off angles. Although the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were also deemed to... Read more...
If you're looking to score a couple of today's hottest flagship smartphones, T-Mobile just might have an offer right up your alley. The company is running a massive Buy One, Get One Free (BOGO) campaign, which is kicking off tomorrow, November 17th. The third-place wireless carrier in the United States has some of best, newly-released smartphones available if you don't mind dealing with a rebate. Under T-Mobile's new promotion, you have to purchase both smartphones using an Equipment Installment Plan (you also have to add at least one new line), and you will receive the price of the second smartphone... When it comes to Apple's latest flagship smartphone, the iPhone X, it feels like in many respects, the company is catching up to features that have long been featured on Android devices. Minimal display bezels, OLED display panels and wireless charging have all been in the Android domain for a few generations (or more). One particular feature that is just now being exploited by the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X is wireless charging. Apple went with the Qi wireless standard when it comes to wireless (inductive) charging, but only supports 5W charging in the most current public builds of iOS... Read more...
Best Buy did not earn itself any brownie points by overcharging customers for Apple's newly minted iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X handsets, each of which carried a $100 premium for the privilege of buying one from the electronics chain instead of direct from Apple, and its explanation as to why it has now pulled the unlocked SKUs from its store shelves is just lame. Summed up, the marked up phones did not sell in part because of "noise in the media" and "confusion" with its customers. Really, Best Buy? "Although there was clearly demand for the un-activated iPhone X, selling it that way... Read more...
Apple's iPhone X was making news well before the device was anywhere close to official, with speculation on what features the smartphone would offer running rampant. Now that we know all about the device down to its cost and when it will launch, the real story is just how many people will fork over the loot to buy what is one of the most expensive smartphones ever sold at $999. A new survey had made the rounds that claims iPhone X demand will be substantial, but that survey says demand won't be exceptional. The report comes from a survey by brokerage Bernstein, and it found that about a quarter... Read more...
Apple generally sees a significant uptick in iPhone sales after releasing a brand new model, which is usually reflected in quarterly earnings reports. We will know in time if that is the case with its iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models. In the meantime, wireless carriers in the United States and Canada have noted a slowdown in upgrades to the iPhone 8 series, with one carrier even deeming demand as being "anemic." Joe Natale, chief executive officer of Rogers Communication, the largest wireless carrier in Canada, is the one who said that about the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. However, Natale also... When Apple announced the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in September, it was just more of the same for many people. While it features a faster processor and wireless charging, it still offers pretty much the same experience that you would expect from the year-old iPhone 7 family, while looking much like 2014's iPhone 6. It looks as though much of the Apple faithful are holding out for the upcoming iPhone X, and a new report suggests that the folks in Cupertino know this to be the case. Taiwan-based Economic Times says that Apple will dramatically cut iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus production by as much... Read more...
