When it comes to iPhone leaks, we typically expect to obtain unreleased information from Apple’s supply chain or from case manufacturers that are happy to share design details and specifications. However, it’s very rare that the leak come from within Cupertino itself, which is exactly what happened this time around. It all started when Apple accidentally published the firmware for its upcoming HomePod AI smart speaker yesterday. Developers were quick to capitalize on Apple’s error and downloaded the code to start sniffing for any hidden treasures (HomePod runs a version of iOS). Well, it didn’t take long for developers to spot references in the device’s code to other Apple products — namely... Read more...
We have been keeping count of the number of combined rumors and leaked photos showing Apple's unreleased and unannounced iPhone 8 model, which is now more than four million. Just kidding, we have no idea what the actual number is, only that it is not small. Adding to the pile is a collection of iPhone renders that are based on leaked CAD files for the final design of the iPhone 8.Gordon Kelly, a contributing writer for Forbes, has been collaborating with case designer Nodus on the iPhone 8 renders. Nodus shared with Kelly CAD files that Apple has been distributing to the supply chain so that accessory makers can be ready with compatible products, such as cases, skins, and so forth. But of course... Read more...
It looks as though Apple is coming down to the wire with regards to resolving issues surrounding its upcoming iPhone 8. The iPhone 8 is expected to make a big splash for the company and will mark the most dramatic departure in design for the smartphone family since it was first introduced over 10 years ago. But at least two lingering issues are giving Apple engineers pause according to fresh reports. Last week, Apple acolyte John Gruber reported that an inductive “wireless” charger would not be including in the box, and that the feature would not be ready until the iOS 11.1 update is made available: I’ve heard that inductive charging will (a) be sold separately, and (b) might be late,... Rumors and speculation are swirling over what features will make their way into the iPhone 8, the next flagship from Apple and the one that will represent a decade of iPhone design evolution. Much of the chatter has been focused on login security—following a note from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that Apple may ditch plans to integrate a Touch ID sensor beneath the display, word on the web is that Apple is working on a 3D face scanning feature that will allow you to unlock the iPhone 8 with your mug.Citing people who are supposedly familiar with the iPhone 8's design, Bloomberg says Apple is currently testing the improved security system. Much the way Touch ID works now, users would be... Read more...
The upcoming iPhone 8’s fingerprint sensor is turning out to be one of the biggest unknowns about the smartphone. Most rumors have centered around the iPhone 8 featuring a Touch ID sensor that is embedded within the OLED touch display. Less frequent reports suggest that the Touch ID sensor will be moved to the rear of the device, like the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. However, well-regarded KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that another path is possible with the iPhone 8: the complete lack of Touch ID. That claim seems rather unfathomable at this point considering how Touch ID is so tightly integrated into iOS, iPhone/iPad security and the Apple Pay system. But Kuo cites “weakened... Read more...
Even though Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 8 won’t make its official debut until this September, it seems as though the supply chain and the accessories market that coalesces around Cupertino’s latest smartphones have made their minds up. One accessory maker, Olixar, seems so confident in the final design of the iPhone 8 that it has already produced three different style cases for the device. In fact, UK phone accessories retailer Mobile Fun is already listing Olixar’s iPhone 8 cases for sale on its site, and even brags about the products in a blog post. The X-Duo is a traditional-style TPU case, providing full coverage around the perimeter of the device and the back (save for cutouts that... Read more...
More leaked images of what is purported to be the iPhone 8 have found their way to the web. The latest batch comes courtesy of a Reddit forum member who claims to have received the snapshots from a "friend in the industry." According to the unnamed friend, manufacturers in China received front and back panels of the unreleased iPhone 8 last week, presumably so they could start making compatible accessories, such as iPhone 8 cases. Here is a look at what is supposed to be the front and back panels of the iPhone 8:One of the things that is notable in the above shot is how thin the bezel is on the iPhone 8. There is hardly any bezel visible at all on the sides, bottom, and top of the handset. You... Read more...
All of the major wireless carriers in the United States have been upgrading their networks and trying to obtain more spectrum in attempts to offer the fastest and most robust connectivity. The next big thing is 1 gigabit downloads. Unfortunately for Apple and fans of the iPhone, a legal dispute with Qualcomm could leave the iPhone 8 behind the competition in this regard. Qualcomm sells an LTE modem chipset for smartphones that is capable of downloading content at up to 1Gbps. Intel is currently working on a modem chipset of its own that will offer the same performance, but it does not look like it will be ready in time for Apple to start mass producing its next flagship handset. That leaves Apple... Read more...
As the launch of the iPhone 8 draws nearer with each passing day, the rumors surrounding Apple’s next-generation flagship are starting to hone in on single design theme and feature set. This is becoming more apparent thanks to some new leaks that have made their way to the internet. The first leak compares the new iPhone 8 not only to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, but also with Samsung’s red-hot Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. Compared to its siblings, the iPhone 8 is slightly larger than the iPhone 7, but much less of a behemoth than the iPhone 7 Plus. However, the iPhone 8’s screen is still larger than that of the iPhone 7 Plus, which shows just how much screen real estate is wasted... Read more...
It’s springtime, which means that iPhone rumors and leaks are ramping up at quickening pace. Last week, we were treated to speculative renders of the incoming iPhone 8 flagship, and today we are getting a look at alleged molds for the smartphone in comparison to its rumored iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus siblings. The molds that have been presented are used by manufacturers that produce cases for iPhones. They of course need device specifications well in advance so that they can have cases ready to go as soon as a new Apple product is launched. The molds show that the iPhone 8 is just slightly larger than the iPhone 7s (which is expected to be identical in size to the current iPhone 7). The iPhone... Read more...
The iPhone 8 speculation train is well underway and it shows no signs of slowing down until the flagship smartphone is officially unveiled later this year. Today, we’re getting a glimpse at new renders of the smartphone which are reportedly based on highly-detailed, leaked CAD files. According to Engadget, which is presenting these renders, its source is highly credible and this perhaps gives us our best look at what Apple has in store for us. The renders confirm the vertically-oriented rear camera setup that has been rumored for the past few months. Despite the fact that the iPhone 8 is said to gain a little in thickness compared to the iPhone 7 (we’re hoping to beef up the battery), the camera... Read more...
Apple’s flagship iPhone models have never been thought of as “affordable”, and that may be even more apparent with the upcoming iPhone 8. According to research note from Goldman Sachs analyst Simona Jankowski, the iPhone 8 could start at a wallet-busting $999. Not surprisingly, this isn’t the first time that we’ve heard that the iPhone 8 would flirt with the $1,000 mark. According to Jankowski, the base iPhone 8 will come with 128GB of storage, forgoing the 32GB SKU currently present on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. This is understandable, as it would be a crime for Apple to release a $1,000 smartphone with 32GB of onboard storage and no way of expanding capacity via a microSD slot.iPhone 8... Read more...
Sometime this year (likely in October), Apple will launch the iPhone 8. This will be an important product release not just because it is another flagship phone, but it marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, the handset that transformed the market for cellular devices. Apple is expected to make a splash to celebrate the occasion, the question is how? According to a J.P. Morgan report, bundled AirPods could be Apple's big play, or at least one of them.Apple famously (and controversially) eliminated the 3.5mm audio jack with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, calling it a courageous act in its mission to push wireless technologies. To that end, it also introduced a set of Bluetooth-enabled AirPods.... Read more...
Apple announced its fiscal Q2 2017 earnings yesterday, and the company reported $52.9 billion in revenue against a Wall Street consensus of $53.1 billion. The company also experienced a downturn in iPhone sales, as it shipped 50.8 million units for fiscal Q2 compared to 51.2 million during the same quarter in 2016. Everyone has been focusing on that figure for iPhone shipments, even if it’s down ever so slightly from the year before. Some are wondering if Apple has lost its mojo, or if Apple’s iPhone boom in China has lost its sizzle. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, there’s another explanation for weaker sales. Cook is blaming this downturn on a product that hasn’t even been released. “I only... Read more...
