Halloween is now upon us as the spooky season comes to an end. To get into the spirit before October 31st, you will not need an Ouija board, just an AR capable device to summon ghosts and skeletons wherever you please. NASA has also joined the festivities by releasing a new sun image that looks suspiciously like a jack-o-lantern. Google is bringing spookiness to life with its new augmented reality features in Google Search. Using Google Search in app or browser on Android or iOS, users can use keywords in search such as “Halloween” or “Skeleton” to summon 3D augmented reality models of a ghost or skeleton. They will not always show up and are not in once place, so you... Read more...
Happy Halloween! Would it truly be a holiday in 2019 without a Google Doodle? The Halloween 2019 Google Doodle features an interactive game with “creepy” creatures. If you go to the Google homepage today, you will be taken a neighborhood that is all dressed up for Halloween. Each of the six orange doors reveals an animal that is associated with Halloween or tends to give people the creeps. The animals include an owl, bat, tarantula, wolf, octopus or a jaguar. Once the user has clicked on the door, they can choose between a “trick” or a “treat”. The “treat” includes an interesting fact about the animal, while the “trick” is accompanied... Read more...
If a major holiday looms, then you can be sure that Facebook has something up its sleeves. With Halloween right around the corner, the company has decided to infuse the reactions we use to express our thoughts on posts, and give us virtual masks to wear while broadcasting through Facebook Live. As seen in the shot above, Facebook Live's interface now features a carousel of different masks to wear, which based on the examples given, look to be quite natural when applied (it's just a matter of time before we see if that translates to real use). Fortunately, the fun doesn't have to end after Halloween; Facebook says that while some of the masks are here just for a limited time (the witch and pumpkin,... Read more...

Is there anything not to like about Halloween? The correct answer is an emphatic, "No!" Think about it for a second --after spending an evening stocking up on free candy and watching horror movies while munching on roasted pumpkin seeds, you can then head over to Steam and stock up on discounted games as part of the service's annual Halloween sale. Ah, life doesn't get any better. No need to wait until tonight if you don't want to, Steam's Halloween sale is taking place right now, and there are some big savings to be had. For example, you can pick up Contraption Maker for $1.49, down 90 percent from its normal selling price of $14.99. Or save 80 percent on The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct,... Read more...
I don't care what you're planning to dress up as for Halloween, Tyler Card has you beat. Who exactly is Tyler Card and why is his costume so epic that I can feel confident dismissing all others? He's a photography nerd who took some scraps of cardboard and built a working -- yes, WORKING -- Nikon DSLR camera costume, complete with a giant LCD screen! It also has a built-in flash, shutter-release button, and is capable of wirelessly triggering his Alienbees strobes, he says. This is why I'm convinced Tyler's costume is better than yours, mine, and anything else I'm likely to see between now and October 31st. His "Making of the Camera Costume" video (embedded above) doesn't go into quite as much... Read more...
It's a typical scenario: your young child is convinced there's a monster under his bed, and showing him Monsters, Inc. doesn't calm him down. That's when you whip out your iPhone and pull up the Monster Meter app. The Monster Meter app is designed to convince your child there are no monsters in his room. There are four monster detection "technologies." Radar – classic radar screen that uses the camera on your device Grid – this scanner also uses the camera on your device Green Meter – playful yet serious meter Metal Meter – more serious looking meter for serious monster finding There is no iPad specific version (as yet), and obviously 1) and 2) above are not going to work...
