Acer has been unveiling some cool gear at CES 2018, and the latest is a massive monitor designed specifically for gamers. It's a massive display that measures 65-inches and has NVIDIA G-Sync technology integrated in conjunction with NVIDIA's new Big Format Gaming Display (BFGD) initiative. The display also has NVIDIA SHIELD hardware built-in for streaming movies and TV shows in 4K HDR resolution. We’ve come to expect over-the-top gaming goodness when it comes to ASUS’ Republic of Gamers (ROG) family, and the company doesn’t disappoint with the announcement of the new ROG Chimera gaming notebook. The fact that this massive machine features a 17.3-inch display is nothing new, but it is the world’s first notebook panel to sport a refresh rate of 144Hz. Dell announced some pretty impressive gaming PCs this morning, and is rounding out its lineup with two new 34-inch Alienware gaming monitors. There are some clear similarities between the AW3418DW and AW3418DW including quad-zone AlienFX lighting, super-thin bezels and NVIDIA G-SYNC technology to smooth out gameplay and reduce screen tearing. For ages, a 1ms response time has been the de facto standard for serious gamers, although we think most would agree that up to 4ms isn't too bad. 8ms is outright ridiculous. Well, both 4ms and 8ms seem real lackluster when compared to AOC's upcoming offerings: a couple of monitors sporting a 0.5 ms response time; or in other words, a response time that's 1/2,000th of a second. Whether or not most gamers would even notice the perceived difference between 1ms and 0.5ms is hard to gauge, but many serious gamers are likely to take this kind of release seriously simply because every little bit helps. EVGA is well known in the enthusiast community for its motherboards, video cards, power supplies and countless other PC peripherals (among other things). The hardware company just announced its upgraded SC17 1080 G-SYNC Gaming Laptop (which is quite a mouthful), but we’ll just call it the SC17 for brevity’s sake. Acer is known for its outrageous gaming monitors, and that is even more apparent today with the new Predator Z35P. The company announced that the Predator Z35P is available for pre-order right here in the United States, and that it will hit retail shelves later this month. At its heart is a hulking 35-inch 21:9 UltraWide WQHD (3440x1440) panel. If that wasn’t enough, the Predator Z35P features a 1800r curvature to make gaming more immersive at it slightly wraps around your field of view. If refresh rate matters a lot to you in gaming, then you might want to pay attention to the brand-new S2417DG from Dell: a monitor spec'd at 165Hz. Well, as long as you're willing to cough up for a graphics card that can reliably deliver 165 FPS in your games! Microsoft is angling to make Windows 10 “the” destination for gamers, as we’ve witnessed with increased crossover between PC and Xbox One gaming. The software giant is taking another step towards appeasing hardcore gamers by finally supporting a few features that have been missing from games purchased via the Windows Store. Universal Windows Program (UWP) games can finally have the option to disable v-sync, which will help to boost frame rates instead of being tied to your monitor’s refresh rate. Disabling v-sync can of course introduce artifacts, but gamers should be given the choice to do so, so it’s nice to see that Microsoft is finally making that happen. Acer has been on a roll recently with a string with high-profile gaming monitors, one of which is the Predator X34 that Dave just reviewed for HotHardware. Today, the company has announced yet another curved display, the Predator Z35, which measures 35 inches across. The Predator Z35 has a lot going for it including a 21:9 WFHD (2560x1080) display with a curvature of 2000R. One of the first times we laid eyes on a curved monitor in the flesh was back at CES 2015 where Dell was showing off this 34-inch bad boy to the masses. Since then curved monitors have been cropping up all over the place, and even a few curved all-in-ones have made a showing here in Q4. New processor architectures inevitably lead to a flurry of refreshed product lines from PC makers. That's how things have been playing out with Skylake, a "tock" in Intel's tick-tock design cadence and its 6th generation Core processor family. As usual, ASUS is on the bleeding edge with new Skylake systems ready to go, one of which is the ROG G752VT. The last time we visited Acer’s Predator family, the company unleashed the X34 with a 34-inch ultra-wide curved display, 100Hz refresh rate and NVIDIA G-SYNC technology. Acer is back at it with two more gaming monitors, both of which feature 27-inch displays and are members of the Predator XB1 Series. First up is the Predator XB271HU, which includes a zero-frame, edge-to-edge design and a WQHD (2560x1440) IPS panel. Thanks to the emergence of NVIDIA’s G-SYNC, AMD’s FreeSync, i.e Adaptive Sync, 4K resolutions and various other display technologies, we’ve had the pleasure of evaluating a number of new monitors recently. One of our favorites from this past year was the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q. Although it featured a resolution of “only” 2560x1440, and employed a TN panel, the monitor’s design language, support for G-SYNC, and ultra-fast (at the time) 144Hz peak refresh rate made it a real pleasure to use, especially for gaming.If you had asked us what we’d change on the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q at the time, we would have said upgrading to a higher-quality IPS panel, without sacrificing on the refresh rate. Just when you thought that Acer had produced its crown jewel, the impressive XR341CK 34-inch curved monitor complete with a 3440x1440 IPS screen and AMD FreeSync support. But Acer, of course, wasn’t content and had to class the joint up a bit with the new Predator X34. And as its name implies, this gaming monitor is out for blood! Laptops are mostly static devices. What we mean by that is, for the vast majority of laptops, what you get at the time of purchase is what you get, and that's that. Unlike a desktop system, in which each individual component is upgradeable without too much fuss, only certain parts of a laptop are user replaceable, at least without some serious deconstruction and maybe even a bit of modding . We were first given a taste of NVIDIA G-SYNC technology over a year and a half ago and it was definitely quite a sweet dish. Like competing solutions from AMD (FreeSync), G-SYNC aims to rid gamers of synchronization-related maladies like VSync input lag, stuttering and screen tearing, providing instead a buttery smooth gaming experience.
