Say it with us now, "Gold is best!" That's the line made hilariously famous by a TeamCoco (Conan O'Brien) skit mocking the gold iPhone, but in all seriousness, the gold color option has turned into, well, a golden egg for Apple. It's apparently so popular that Apple will reportedly offer a gold color option for its next generation of 9.7-inch iPad models. It's expected that Apple will announce the new iPad models this month, and according to Bloomberg, gold will be a color choice for the rear part of the chassis. This will be in addition to the same silver and gray options available on the current iPad Air. Companies like Goldgenie will sell you a gold iPad (or gold plate your existing one),... Read more...
Gilded phones seem to be all the all the rage lately, with Apple having released a gold colored iPhone 5S and Samsung reportedly following suit with a golden version of its Galaxy S4 device. Well, it looks like gold fever has struck HTC as well, though unlike its two aforementioned competitors, HTC is planning go all-out with its golden makeover. HTC's U.K. division today announced the release of the Gold HTC One using real gold. The company produced the handset to celebrate the 18th anniversary of the MOBO Awards, and the winner of the Best Newcomer category will receive one of these limited edition (and very expensive) handsets. There are only five Gold HTC One phones in existence, each one... Read more...
The HTC One is a nice-looking phone (our review here), and it’s shown up in black, red, blue, and sexy silver, but now HTC’s flagship phone may be donning a more audacious gown. According to leaked photos from Sina Weibo (it’s behind a login screen), there may be a gold-colored HTC One in the works, as well. Yes, gold, just like the gold-colored iPhone 5S that Conan O’Brien openly mocked (Gold is best! Best! Best! Best!), which means that if the leaked photos are accurate, at least two flagship smartphones will be available in the color of kings. Credit: Sina Weibo via PhoneDog Two phones coming in what is frankly an unprecedented smartphone color does not a trend make,... Read more...
Similar to Midas, nearly everything Apple touches these days turns to gold. Figuratively, of course, though also in a somewhat literal sense if the rumors about a gold iPhone 5S turn out to be true. A gold iPhone 5S is way on the opposite end of the spectrum of earlier rumors suggesting Apple may release a line of low-cost iPhone models made of polycarbonate plastic. Why gold? The obvious answer is that it's a symbol of luxury. Plus, it's apparently one of the "easiest colors to anodize onto an iPhone," according to Rene Ritchie of iMore. If Apple is indeed venturing away from offering just black and white models (the polycarbonate iPhones are rumored to ship in various color options similar... Read more...
There’s gold in them thar motherboards, or so the saying (sort of) goes. ASUS announced that its upcoming line of Intel Z87-based motherboards will sport a decidedly gold color scheme, from the heatsinks to the DIMM slots. The boards will also feature black PCBs and silver accents. For the record, we’re talking nearly the whole line, including ASUS’ TUF, and WS motherboards, so if you prefer the older blue scheme over the new gold one, you're out of luck unless you roll with an ROG board. ASUS Z87 WS ASUS says that the new “gold imbued” heatsinks actually do offer better cooling performance, with a larger surface area for better heat dissipation than its earlier... Read more...
Forget about the so-called Apple Tax and whether or not it exists, if you're really determined to spend more on your laptop than any of your friends and co-workers, get in touch with Computer Choppers about a 24K gold plated MacBook Pro with diamond accents. You'll have to buzz them on the horn or fire off an email to receive a quote, presumably because they're not looking to draw attention to themselves for exorbitant price tags, but would like to be known for luxurious finishes. Computer Choppers and the work they've done up to this point has been featured in several printed publications. As for the gold plated MacBook Pro, there aren't a ton of details to go on, but here's what we know so... Read more...

There's simply no denying that many tech enthusiasts love all things small.  As of late, with the likes of products such as the Asus Eee PC, Lenovo ThinkPad X200, Dell Studio Hybrid and other small form-factor systems; thin, small and light is definitely "in" and has become a fad of sorts.  What is this obsession with small?  What ever happend to big, clunkly and overbearing?  You can't turn around these days without bumping into something that looks like it was designed to work best in Munchkin Land or Gary Coleman's gym bag.  Regardless, it seems Super Talent isn't about to give us manly men, who like big, nasty, in-your-face computer gear, a break from the... Microsoft's security updates for June seem to be having a profound effect in the ongoing battle against crooks who steal passwords and usernames, then use their ill-gotten info to cash in the imaginary gold MMORPG players accumulate for real money. One password stealer, called Taterf, was detected on 700,000 computers in the first day after the update. That's twice as many infections as were spotted during the entire month after Microsoft began detecting the notorious Storm Worm malware last September."These are ridiculous numbers of infections my friends, absolutely mind-boggling," wrote Matt McCormack, a spokesman with Microsoft's Malware Response Center, in a Friday blog posting.Between June... Various companies and even the RIAA have either settled with or won numerous law suits against pirates and/or networks that allow piracy such as the old Napster or Kazaa.  We're talking at least 9-figures worth of damages awarded and/or settlements paid off, but yet the artists don't seem to be getting paid:"Artist managers and lawyers have been wondering for months when their artists will see money from the copyright settlements and how it will be accounted for," said lawyer John Branca, who has represented Korn, Don Henley, and The Rolling Stones, among others."Some of them are even talking about filing lawsuits if they don't get paid soon."It would be an incredibly ironic end to the music... Having just gone out for some last minute stocking stuffers for my significant (very significant if I know what's good for me) other, I can totally relate to this headline and story.  I purchased 6 cartridges in total for an HP Photosmart 8450 printer and it cost me over $170.  Now mind you, the printer itself, almost a full year ago now, cost me like $110. PopPhoto comments on HP's (and many others) racket in the ink business.  You think it's about selling printers?  Guess again.  The ink biz pulls in more profit than a high-end Cat House a when ship full of Navy boys pulls up to port.   "$10,000 per gallon of ink? OPEC, EAT YOUR HEART OUT!... Read more...

In the need for some low latency ram that's just begging to be overclocked? Overclockers Online takes a look at OCZ's 1024-3200 Gold Edition XTC. It's some great ram to have if your motherboard supports DIMM Voltage of 3.0 of higher. "For the suicide-shot overclockers, this is the memory for you because nothing will be able to touch it at 250+ with timings of 2-2-2-5. The gamers out there with higher end CPUs that also have higher multipliers will fall in love with the tight timings at moderate overclocks as well. It is hard to say whether the XTC heatspreaders are any better than the standard ones but the theory behind them is solid and they... Read more...
