As one of the most anticipated games of the year, Battlefield 4 also has the distinction of being one of the most buggy releases, and that's regardless of platform. Even worse, Electronic Arts and DICE can't seem to catch a break. To wit, there's a new patch available for the PC version, and the main reason it exists is to fix a bunch of issues introduced in a previous update. Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back! Those of you wielding multiple graphics cards will be happy to know that the latest patch issues a fix for terrain flickering when running BF4 on a SLI or CrossFire configured system. Applying the patch is also supposed to resolve "three of the top crash issues on the... Read more...
The suits on Wall Street took notice of rumors that Electronic Arts had put a freeze on DICE from working on future projects such as Star Wars: Battlefront and a new Mirror's Edge title due to ongoing problems with Battlefield 4. EA shares dipped more than 8 percent as reports of halted production pranced through cyberspace. In a statement to Polygon, an EA spokesperson earlier this week acknowledged that there's much work to be done to fix Battlefield 4's persistent problems. "The team at DICE is working non-stop to update the game. Since Battlefield 4 China Rising expansion pack was already in the final states of development by the time issues began with Battlefield 4, we decided to fulfill... Read more...
The hits have been coming (and coming, and coming) from AMD’s Hawaiian press event today, and here’s one more.  AMD has also announced Mantle, a “low-level high-performance console-style” graphics API for the PC. Mantle will ostensibly allow developers to work “closer to the metal”, like they do with console GPUs. And wouldn’t you know it--it’s AMD GPUs that will be powering ALL next generation consoles, so the whole concept flows out of AMD’s experience with both consoles and PCs. AMD’s angle is that PC graphics present several challenges that hamstring both performance and programmability. For instance, you have to support a huge... Read more...
Battlefield fans, rejoice: EA has just announced a couple of dates worth paying attention to. On October 1, the company will launch the game's open beta, affecting the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. By all appearances, no pre-order is required to gain access. As previously planned, the game will launch on October 29. Along with this news, EA has also revealed the street dates for this game and others (FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25) for next-gen consoles: November 19th for Xbox One (21st for Europe), and November 12th for PlayStation 4 (29th for Europe). As we covered last month, Battlefield 4 is one of EA's titles that qualifies for $10 upgrade pricing if you happen to want to pick up the game for... Read more...
Sure, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, which was built on the Frostbite 3 game engine, looks great, but it’s nothing compared to the Frostbite 3 engine-equipped Battlefield 4. In a YouTube video, gamemaker DICE and Frostbite developers discuss the breath-taking features of the game engine with scenes from Battlefield 4, and it’s the kind of thing that makes you want to put your chin in your hands, sigh dreamily, and watch in awe. In an effort to offer realism and believability, the Frostbite 3 engine handles features such as trees swaying in the breeze; the game engine produces “weather”, and the rules of the weather affect the movement of the trees, the ocean, and... After playing through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's single-player campaign and spending some solid time with the game in multiplayer, we can attest that MW3 is the latest well-executed title in the long-running Call of Duty franchise.
