Let the holiday shopping season begin! With Black Friday just a day away, we're seeing plenty of announcements from various retailers trying to convince us to get up early and walk through their doors. Like other retailers, Best Buy is ready to get in on the action this year. One of the retailer's hot offerings this year is sure to be a $197 HP laptop that will be available in stores on Friday. The $197 HP laptop features an Intel Celeron 900 processor (2.2GHz), 2GB memory, and a 160GB 7200 rpm hard drive. The machine comes with integrated Intel X4500M graphics which will get the job done for HD video but not much in terms of gaming.  For those who miss out on the deal or who want something... Now that Windows 7 is officially here, Best Buy wants to help you make the transition to the new operating system. In addition to selling the new platform and many Windows 7-equipped PCs in store, the company's Geek Squad is offering Windows 7 upgrade services for just $39.99, excluding the price of the software. Normally, Geek Squad's operating system install service charge is $129.99. Of course, Best Buy is also selling a variety of PCs that come preloaded with Windows 7. A new exclusive bundle from HP is dubbed “PC Home Makeover.” For $1,199.99, you'll get an HP desktop, monitor, laptop, netbook, wireless router, and Geek Squad setup and networking. This offer will be available until mid-January.... Read more...
As margins on actual wares grow slimmer, many retailers are looking to soak up more cash in the form of services. Granted, that's increasingly tough in the DIY universe that we live in, and even tougher in a retailer that looks to save people money. In an odd move aimed to rival Best Buy's Geek Squad, Wal-Mart has announced plans to offer its own form of tech support for shoppers. The mega-retailer has confirmed that it has started up a partnership with N.E.W. Customer Service Companies in order to offer in-home setup services to those who buy their gear from Wally World. In fact, the new offering will be in place prior to the holiday season getting fully underway, so there's a good chance things... Read more...
Oh, wow. What in the world is this? Insignia's Little Buddy Child Tracker, which absolutely has the worst product name we've ever seen, it a GPS tracker that's designed specifically to track kids and help parents keep their worrying in check. Of course, there are plenty of benefits to having this, but it's the approach here that bothers us. Marketed under Best Buy's in-house label, the tiny GPS-enabled stick has an integrated battery in it and continually tracks location as it moves. The idea here is for parents to shove this into backpacks, notebooks or lunch containers in order to keep tabs on their child's location. Granted, it'd be far more effective if put directly within a pocket or jacket... Read more...
It's a crazy world we live in. While some industries are shutting retail locations down to cope with a slower economy, the consumer electronics realm seems to be ramping up for growth. While Apple has already made the (smart) decision to open a 24/7 location in the Big Apple, Best Buy still has yet to open a single store that remained open around the clock. But all that changes in a month. On the ever-so-spooky Friday the 13th in November, the company's first-ever 24-hour location will open in the heart of New York City. The 48,000 square foot store will be located on the corner of 14th Street and 4th Avenue, right smack dab in the midst of historic downtown Manhattan’s Union Square. If our math... Read more...

Assuming a mole from Best Buy is correct, the retailer is going to be a busy place on August 23rd. The mole has provided Boy Genius Report with a screenshot that shows Best Buy’s plans to begin offering a number of anticipated feature phones that day. Although it’s no iPhone, the Samsung Omnia 2 is definitely one of the hot upcoming phones that will soon be available on Verizon’s network according to the leaked screenshot. Other popular phones include the Samsung Rogue, LG Chocolate Touch, and Samsung u450 Intensity, all for Verizon. T-Mobile is said to be getting the Samsung Gravity 2, while AT&T users will be able to enjoy the Samsung Solstice and the LG Xenon. Sprint users will have a... Read more...
All those who were angry on Sunday, please calm down. Despite the fact that the sales force and the computers seemed to think it was a one-week promotion, that price drop to $99 for the Palm Pre on Sunday was nothing more than a glitch. The confusion began when a picture of an in-store banner promoting a week long special of a $99 Pre with a 2-year contract was posted online. While it turns out it was a mistake, and announced as such via Twitter by Best Buy marketing manager John Bernier on Sunday afternoon, the deal somehow got programmed into vendor systems and people were able to walk into retail stores and get the price, or even a price match, if they had purchased the Pre recently enough.... You knew it would happen at some point, didn't you? With mobile operators offering subsidized netbooks in order to advance adoption of mobile broadband services, Sprint has become the first of the US-based carriers to reach all the way down to free. Or almost free, if we're being precise. While AT&T and Verizon Wireless currently offer the HP-Compaq Mini 110c for $199 with a 2-year data plan, Sprint has teamed up with Best Buy in order to sell the machine for just $0.99 with a 2-year agreement on the company's "Now Network." If one were to buy this machine straight-out, you'd pay $389.99, but before you whip out the credit card for that sub-$1 charge, take a look at the full costs. The 2-year... Read more...
Best Buy: it's the place you go when you need a new GPU, a new HDD, a new stick of RAM or a new notebook when time is tight and you can't bother to shop around. Soon, however, it'll be the go-to place for electric vehicles. You read right, electric vehicles. As the big box retailer looks to broaden its horizons, it will soon begin offering "green vehicles" in select stores. In fact, it has already started the program up in a few locations, with 19 stores in west coast states (Oregon, Washington and California) offering up electric scooters, electric bicycles and Segway transporters. Things are set to get even more serious this summer with the introduction of the Brammo Enertia, an $11,995 electric... Read more...
A new survey by Best Buy Mobile reveals some interesting ways in which users interact with and value their mobile phones. For example, according to the survey, one in three Americans would give up television in order to keep their mobile phones and 60% of those surveyed would be willing to abstain from alcohol for a week rather than give up their mobile phone. The poll of 1,000 Americans, half men and half women over the age of 18, also revealed some barriers to smartphone ownership, including confusion about the assortment of models and features, difficulty with the shopping experience, and notions that smartphones are too expensive. Despite these barriers, the survey notes that a sizable segment... Read more...

It appears that Microsoft is doing a lot more than having Jerry Seinfeld munching churros and going shoe shopping with Bill Gates to help bolster the company's image. Part of Microsoft's $300 million marketing campaign includes placing Microsoft customer service representatives in select consumer electronics retail outlets across the U.S. Similar in nature to "Apple Geniuses," Microsoft will be placing 155 "Microsoft Gurus" at Best Buy, Circuit City, and similar stores before the end of this year--presumably in time for the holiday shopping season. While the Microsoft Gurus will "be answering questions about PCs and Microsoft products, as well as giving demos of how the company's products work... Read more...

The information coming out of Microsoft and Intel camps regarding the “Vista Capable” class action law suit has certainly been interesting.  At first glance some of the data might look damaging, such as documents alleging that Intel wanted the WDDM loosened a bit so that their integrated graphics chipsets such as those in the i915 family would be eligible for a sticker. But all of this happened well after Best Buy apparently gave the thumbs up to a confusing, two-tier marketing plan that seems to have been cooked up by a small group of Microsoft executives -- Vista product manager Shanen Boettcher, marketing director Rajesh Srinivasan and quite possibly Will Poole. In an e-mail dated Aug....
