You knew it would happen at some point, didn't you? With mobile operators offering subsidized netbooks in order to advance adoption of mobile broadband services, Sprint has become the first of the US-based carriers to reach all the way down to free. Or almost free, if we're being precise. While AT&T and Verizon Wireless currently offer the HP-Compaq Mini 110c for $199 with a 2-year data plan, Sprint has teamed up with Best Buy in order to sell the machine for just $0.99 with a 2-year agreement on the company's "Now Network." If one were to buy this machine straight-out, you'd pay $389.99, but before you whip out the credit card for that sub-$1 charge, take a look at the full costs. The 2-year... Read more...

Things are set to get even more serious this summer with the introduction of the Brammo Enertia, an $11,995 electric... Read more...
A new survey by Best Buy Mobile reveals some interesting ways in which users interact with and value their mobile phones. For example, according to the survey, one in three Americans would give up television in order to keep their mobile phones and 60% of those surveyed would be willing to abstain from alcohol for a week rather than give up their mobile phone. The poll of 1,000 Americans, half men and half women over the age of 18, also revealed some barriers to smartphone ownership, including confusion about the assortment of models and features, difficulty with the shopping experience, and notions that smartphones are too expensive. Despite these barriers, the survey notes that a sizable segment... Read more...

The information coming out of Microsoft and Intel camps regarding the “Vista Capable” class action law suit has certainly been interesting.  At first glance some of the data might look damaging, such as documents alleging that Intel wanted the WDDM loosened a bit so that their integrated graphics chipsets such as those in the i915 family would be eligible for a sticker. But all of this happened well after Best Buy apparently gave the thumbs up to a confusing, two-tier marketing plan that seems to have been cooked up by a small group of Microsoft executives -- Vista product manager Shanen Boettcher, marketing director Rajesh Srinivasan and quite possibly Will Poole. In an e-mail dated Aug.... Selling Macs at a limited number of Best Buy locations seems to have turned out to be a good idea for both companies.  That's why Best Buy executives have leaked word of a new plan that would test the waters in other markets.“The plan would effectively double the number of Best Buy stores carrying Apple's computer line at the end of 2007, where rough figures placed a healthy array of Macs in approximate 230 to 270 locations."Even with prospects for a slowing economy, we believe Mac demand can keep going strong given new products," Reitzes wrote in his note to clients. On February 18, 2009, broadcasters will stop transmitting analog signals. As such, this move should not surprise anyone, but Best Buy is the first consumer-electronics retailer to indicate it has pulled the plug on analog TVs. The Richfield, Minn.-based electronics retailer said it has pulled all remaining analog television products from store shelves and will only sell digital video tuners. Best Buy said it is the first retailer to exit the analog television business. Last month, the retailer released a survey it conducted that showed that almost 90 percent of Americans don't understand HDTVs. The retailer then launched a campaign to educate consumers about the high definition/digital products.... Read more...

"A faithful reader informed us that he went into his local Best Buy store and managed to buy an ATI-branded X1900 GT retail card. We note that the card is clocked at 574MHz core, and works at 500MHz in 2D, while the memory is clocked at 594MHz. The chip was heating up to 63 Celsius... Read more...
