CybertronPC CLX Osiris 14 Gaming Laptop Review

Introducing The CybertronPC CLX Osiris 14

CybertronPC is hoping to hit a sweet spot for gamers with its new 14-inch laptop, the CLX Osiris 14. The system is light and slim for a gaming laptop, but it packs an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M and Intel Skylake quad-core CPU under its hood, so this machine is clearly not messing around.

The Osiris 14 is a member of CybertronPC’s CLX family, which is so decidedly different than CybertronPC’s other product offerings, that the line has its own website. If you visit CybertronPC.com, you’ll need to choose the CLX site to find the Osiris 14.

It’s not unusual for PC makers to create or buy distinct brands for their gaming systems. (Think Dell and Alienware, for example.) CybertronPC’s main website offers a range of systems, including home and business PCs. It has gaming computers, too, but these rigs lack the luxury options and semi-custom features that define the CLX brand. When potential customers shop CLX, just as if they shopped Alienware, they're looking for an experience, and hopefully a more premium product.

And CLX is, indeed, an experience. CybertronPC opted for an Egyptian theme with the series, naming its systems Anubis, Horus, Ra, Scarab – and Osiris. The systems all feature the CLX icon and have special packaging to make for a better unboxing experience than you’ll get when buying a traditional PC. Some CLX systems even feature slick paint jobs. Of course, none of this matters if a system can't deliver top-notch performance in a quality design. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the hardware in the CLX Osiris 14.

The 14-inch display on the CLX Osiris 14 has a 1920x1080 resolution (16:9 aspect ratio). There are plenty of laptops with higher resolution panels, but FHD is respectable for a gaming laptop of this size. CybertronPC opted for an Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor, which has a clock speed of 2.6GHz (3.5GHz Turbo). The CPU seems to be a popular choice for system builders right now; it also appeared in the ASUS ROG Strix machine that we recently took for a spin. And, like ASUS, CybertronPC selected an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M for graphics muscle. CybertronPC also opted for two 8GB modules of Kingston’s HyperX Impact DDR4-2400 memory.

As for storage, the Osiris 14 looks well-equipped. It features a 256GB Samsung 950 Pro SSD for the operating system, which is Windows 10 Home. (You can upgrade to Pro when configuring the laptop online.) The laptop’s bulk storage drive is a spacious 1TB hard drive from Western Digital.

CybertronPC rounded out the package with Gigabit LAN and a Killer Wireless-AC 1535 wireless adapter, which is a 2x2 MU-MIMO-compatible chip with game-friendly features. Bluetooth 4.0 is also on-board.

The company's website configuration engine is easy to use and has several options for most hardware, but you’re out of luck if you want to change the processor or GeForce GTX 970M. The engine also has an array of gaming-oriented accessories from Logitech and Razer.

It also has a packaging option that makes a fairly depressing statement about the state of the shipping industry: You can pay $100 to encase your Osiris 14 in a protective “CLX Sarcophagus” crate for the trip to your door. That said, our review laptop arrived in the standard CLX packaging and was thankfully unscathed.

The price tag of $1,599.99 (for a model configured like the one we tested) is going to be out of range for some mainstream users, but it doesn't strike us as unreasonable for buyers who want a compact, luxury gaming notebook with good firepower.
