We've covered Elon Musk's proposed Hyperloop before, including some speculation on what kind of system he might propose. The mass transit concept unveiled today is similar, in some respects, to the evacuated vacuum tube first proposed by the Rand Corporation in 1972, but varies in a number of key areas. It doesn't rely on maintaining a full vacuum, but instead offers an atmosphere roughly 1/6 pressure found on Mars, or equivalent to cruising Earth at 150,000 feet. As expected, the initial LA - SF proposed run would accelerate passengers to trans-sonic velocities, but they wouldn't do it using maglev. Instead, a linear induction motor is used to provide the necessary acceleration and deceleration,... Read more...

Last week Interbrand issued its 2008 Best Global Brands rankings. While most of the top 10 remained unchanged from 2007, with IBM and Microsoft swapping places (IBM rose from 3 to 2), one big change emerged: Google rose from 20 to 10, with Mercedes-Benz dropping to 11.  Interbrand produces this report annually, which is then used to produce a special report by Business Week. The report is generated from June 30th to June 30th annually, so while it does show quite a bit of financial firms dropping in global ranking from 2007, it doesn't show the full effect of the recent financial turmoil on Wall Street and elsewhere.  For example, Merrill Lynch dropped from 22 to 34, while HSBC dropped... "The devil made me do it" used to be the ready-made excuse you could trot out when you got caught being naughty. Society's views on personal responsibility have changed quite a bit since the devil was listed on everybody's rap sheet as an accomplice. The modern version is playing "Grand Theft Auto made me do it."Last month, the trio – all aged between 15 and 16, and as such may not be named – allegedly firebombed three cars in North Fulton County, Georgia with homemade petrol bombs. Each weapon was made from a bottle filled with a lighter fluid, with a rag stuffed into the spout as a fuse.According to a report by local news service WSBTV, the trio were arrested by local police. When they were... Read more...

The battle between Microsoft and Apple may have caused Microsoft to lose some of its luster in the global brand rankings.  The Redmond giant has slipped from number 11 to number 59 over the past three years."The effect of Apple's 'Hi, I'm a Mac' advertising campaign may have taken its toll on Microsoft," CoreBrand CEO James Gregory said in a statement. "The launch of a series of new products, following a long, relatively dormant period, will be closely watched to see if it will have a positive impact on the Microsoft brand."Microsoft remains a strongly recognized brand in virtually all markets, and it's very likely that other surveys wouldn't rank the company quite so low.... That was fast. Only a day after introducing their new line of aluminum and glass iMacs, Apple has released updates for them. The updates were only vaguely identified as providing "important bug fixes." Owners of the day-old 20-in. and 24-in. iMacs should install iMac Software Update 1.0, Apple said in a terse message accompanying the 5.1MB download, but it didn't spell out the exact fixes. Some users on various Apple-oriented message forums claimed updated ATI video drivers were among the changes, but Apple did not respond when queried for details. As is the norm after a hardware refresh, Apple also posted a new version of Boot Camp, the free-of-charge dual boot utility that's still... HotHardware told you earlier about the nifty web-based phone service GrandCentral. It allows you to ring every number you have on any phone of your choosing, along with a powerful caller ID and a host of other features. Well, Google was interested in the service, too, and thought GrandCentral would make a grand addition to their stable of web-based widgets.  They announced the purchase of the company on Monday on their official blog. "We think GrandCentral's technology fits well into Google's efforts to provide services that enhance the collaborative exchange of information between our users," Google product manager Wesley Chan wrote in a post on the company's blog. Over... Read more...
I spy with my little eye something that doesn't belong!  Here's a clue, it's big, square, and green.  Yep, you guessed it.  It's the oddly placed, lone AMD umbrella flanked by dozens of Intel umbrellas outside of an eatery at this year's Computex... Now if that image isn't reminiscent of AMD's current situation with Intel I don't know what is. :)  This had to be such a funny thing to see for all of the hardcore geeks out in Taipei this past week.... A new study shows the dangers of buying an iPod for people with pacemakers: "The portable music players caused pacemakers to malfunction in 50 percent of patients, according to the study by a Michigan high school senior that was expected to be presented Thursday at the Heart Rhythm Society's annual meeting, in Denver. The biggest concern is that pacemakers store the history of a heart's rhythms, said Jay Thaker, the Okemos High School student, who worked with several doctors on the research. "If a physician was to go back and look at that (history), the physician might think that the patient was having abnormal heart rhythms," he added." Holy unnecessary surgeries Batman!  That kind of device... Read more...
Adtron announced that it is now shipping its new generation of Flashpak drives in both SATA and IDE interfaces in the 2.5" form factor.
