AMG has announced the world's most powerful four-cylinder engine in a series production model. The engine is the M 139 Mercedes-AMG 2.0L, and it will come in two output versions. One will be fitted into the Mercedes-AMG cars and is the S version making 416 horsepower and 369 pound-foot of torque. That gives it a specific output of 208.9 hp per liter. Mercedes-AMG will use the engine in a wide range of models, and they will all make their way to the United States meaning we will get to partake in this powerful four-banger. The engine will also be used in a lesser trim models where it will produce 382 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. The new engine will be used in the A45, CLA45, GLA45, and the GLB45.... Read more...
The ever-increasing fuel economy standards were sure to be eventual the death of big displacements engines. A new rumor floating around says that death is coming soon for Mercedes' famed bi-turbo V12 engine. That engine is found under the hood of the Mercedes SL roadster with the most appealing version being the Mercedes-AMG SL 65 with the bi-turbo 603hp V12 underfoot. A German blog called mbpassion has cited a source that claims the production of the bi-turbo V12 AMG SL 65 will end in the next few months. That was a very expensive car ringing in at $222,000 and it didn't offer much in the way of a performance improvement compared to the bi-turbo V8 SL 63 that sat right under it for $70,000 less.... We got a tiny glimpse of the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar last week, but today we're receiving “The Full Monty”. In a word, the car is simply stunning. As we previously reported, the Project ONE is heavily derived from Formula 1 technology, including its carbon fiber monocoque construction and its turbocharged V6 engine. Starting with the engine, the 1.6-liter unit produces 612 horsepower by itself. But roughly 600hp isn't enough for “hypercar” duty. You need more powah! So, the V6 is augmented by a total of four electric motors. Two front-mounted wheel motors add 160hp each (spinning at 50,000 RPM each), and are hooked up to their own single-speed transmission. A third 160hp eclectic motor... Read more...
It looks as though the hyper-car arena is about to get just a little bit more crowed. If the Porsche 918 Spyder, McLaren P1 and Ferrari LeFerrari and Bugatti Chiron are “old hat” for you, Mercedes-AMG is just two weeks away from revealing it latest pavement ripper. The Mercedes-AMG “Project One” is by all accounts a street legal F1 car, using a 1.6-liter direct-injected turbocharged V6 engine derived from the Mercedes F1 program. But rather than the screaming 13,000 RPM rev limit of the race car, the Project One will have a more “sedate” redline of 11,000 RPM. The engine will produce a peak of 1000 horsepower, which puts it on par with the McLaren, Porsche and Ferrari, but well below that of... Read more...
