According to Korean news sources, 11 people, including one prominent former Samsung engineer, have been arrested for allegedly selling secrets to one of Samsung's rival firms. The report states that a 46-year-old former SMD researcher, whose name is being withheld, was paid ~$170,000 "from the competitor in exchange for secret data on the so-called "small mask scanning" technology involved in building active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays for large televisions. Until now, AMOLED displays have mostly been used for small smart devices." The complaint indicates that the researcher took a job with the rival firm with the expectation that he'd be rewarded with an executive position... Read more...
Although it came as no shock, Samsung Electronics announced today that it has officially spun off its display business into a new corporation called Samsung Display Co., Ltd, with operations under the new arrangements beginning tomorrow. At the moment of its birth, Samsung Display became the world’s largest display manufacturer, with 20,000 employees, five factories, and $20 billion (USD) in revenue last year. The lucky CEO of the new corporation is Donggun Park, who put in his time at the company by previously heading up Samsung’s LCD business. The press release announcing the change noted that Samsung Display originated as an R&D department for Samsung back in 1991. My, how... Read more...
Portable monitors, huh? Yeah, they've been around, but they've soared in popularity here lately. We actually haven't seen too many of these at the 13.3" level, but GeChic is breaking the mold. It's a fairly massive portable display, boasting a frame that's just 8mm thick and sporting a resolution of 1366x768. It can be powered via a USB port or a separate battery pack, and yes, it includes VGA/HDMI video connectors through a 30-pin adapter. If you're into the mini DisplayPort, that's an optional adapter as well. Basically, this thing is designed to be an external display used for smartphones and tablets. It's a bit of a complex setup, probably best used in scenarios where you can set it and forget... Read more...
Acer announced five new slim LED monitors that range in size from 20 inches to 27 inches. All of the new monitors feature adjustable tilt bases, a 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a 5ms response time. The Acer S Series use white LED technology which consumes up to 68 percent less power than standard LCD displays. Taking a closer look at some of the new models, the S235HL is a 23-inch model that measures just over half an inch thick. This monitor's I/O ports can be found on the base to help eliminate cable clutter. The 20-inch S200HL offers a resolution of 1600 x 900 along with dual inputs (VGA and DVI). Two additional 23-inch widescreen monitors, the S230HL Abd and S230HL Abii, offer a resolution... Read more...
LCD makers got caught with their hands in the cookie jar, so to speak, and now it's time to pay up. The State of California Department of Justice announced a $538 million settlement resulting from a lawsuit filed in October 2010 against 10 companies who allegedly "conspired to fix, raise, maintain, or stabilize prices of TFT-LCD flat panels resulting in overcharges to consumers." The settlement applies to products with LCD panels (computer monitors, laptops, and PCs) purchased between 1999 and 2006, though only if you live in the District of Columbia or one of 24 states named in the settlement, including Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan,... Out with the old and in with the new -- that's the motto driving Samsung's latest business decision. The display maker officially announced its intentions of spinning off its liquid crystal display (LCD) division so it can better focus on the future of display technology, which Samsung feels has everything to do with organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels and little to do with LCDs. "Currently, the display market is undergoing rapid changes with OLED panels expected to fast replace LCD panels to become the mainstream," Samsung said. "Amid this structural change of the Display industry, adopting measures for change and innovation, including business restructuring, are essential to improve... Read more...

How much would you pay for a 21:9 CinemaWide LCD TV? Or, maybe we should ask: how little would you pay? Philips already revealed one of these sets in the past year for TV owners who just love watching ultra-wide movies, and now Vizio -- the low-cost TV king -- is getting into the same game. The XVT 3D CinemaWide will soon arrive as a 58" beast (with 50" and 71" models planed) with a 2,560 x 1,080 resolution and a $3,499 price. One on hand, that's far more expensive than most other 58" sets, but on the other, it's not like Vizio has a lot of competition with this aspect ratio. Other specifications include a 120Hz Edge LED lit display, Theater 3D support, built-in Wi-Fi and Vizio Internet Apps.... Read more...
Speaking of reshuffling! RIM's not the only company making some changes today, as Hitachi's flat-panel TV business is also looking to try on a new dress. The company nnounced that, with the goal of building a business management structure more closely linked to market, Hitachi Consumer Business Group features flat-screen TV business from FY 2012 Electronics Co., Ltd. Hitachi, Ltd. has been in charge of consumer marketing and sales of home appliances from a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi and then transferred to the group, decided to sales-driven management system. The reason for the business transfer? Well, they'll be halting domestic production of Wii LCD and plasma TVs in order to improve... Read more...
LCDs are brilliant, sure, but what about a transparent one? Yep, Samsung has one. Today, they announced that they'll be expanding the transparent display market with production of a 46-inch transparent LCD panel, beginning this month. Younghwan Park, senior vice president of LCD marketing, Device Solutions, Samsung Electronics, said, “Transparent panels, an exciting application of next-generation display technology, have unlimited potential to change our viewing habits over the next several years. As a strong supporter of the transparent display market, Samsung plans to develop this technology into a new growth engine for our LCD business.” Samsung’s 46-inch transparent LCD... Read more...
Sometimes competitors join forces for the mutual benefit of each party, which is what Samsung and Sony did by teaming up on their S-LCD venture. Now, Sony is bailing, selling its almost 50% share to Samsung for a reported $940 million. Sony’s struggles in the TV business are no secret, and this move looks to be an effort for the company to outsource its displays to a cheaper alternative elsewhere. There appears to be no bad blood in this deal, as Sony may even continue to get some of its displays from S-LCD. For its part, Samsung will now be able to claim S-LCD as a wholly-owned subsidiary. For Sony, this means that it is looking for cheaper ways to put screens on its devices; for Samsung,... Read more...
Ever heard of an Optical Sensor in Pixel panel? Now you have. Samsung just announced that it began mass production of 40-inch 'Optical Sensor in Pixel' LCD panels, which feature highly advanced optical sensors, in November this year. The Optical Sensor in Pixel LCD panel detects reflected images of an object on the panel using Infrared sensors that are built into the panel. With optical sensor in each pixel of the panel, the new panel can much more accurately assess touch sensitivity compared to existing touch panels. Using next-generation image sensing technology, the Optical Sensor in Pixel panel can detect more than 50 touch points simultaneously and can display images with Full HD resolution... Read more...
If you aren't playing the streaming game, you just aren't getting with the program. That's the message being handed down these days, and HP's making sure they aren't missing any bandwagon action. The new Wireless TV Connect was revealed today, enabling laptops to beam content to displays with "no delays and no hassles." In the box, you'll get a PC adapter, TV adapter, USB cable, HDMI cable, power adapter and warranty card. That'll allow you to stream HD 1080p content straight from the computer with no lip sync issues -- it'll even handle Blu-ray footage and 3D content. HP claims that the entire thing can be setup in 5 minutes. Any notebook or desktop with an available HDMI and USB port can be... Read more...
On many levels, 3D Vision 2 is very similar to 3D Vision. The technology works in exactly the same way. It uses the same software, and the new glasses we’ll be showing you are backwards compatible with the original emitters. Conversely, the original 3D Vision glasses are forward compatible with newer 3D Vision 2 kits. But NVIDIA has made a number of physical and technical tweaks that enhance the technology in a few key ways. NVIDIA has redesigned its active-shutter glasses and incorporated 20% larger lenses and worked with ecosystem partners to bring new, larger, full-HD 3D Vision compatible monitors to market. They’ve also developed a new technology dubbed LightBoost that ultimately... Read more...
When we first took a look at NVIDIA’s 3D Vision technology a couple of years ago, we came away impressed. We understand that gaming and watching video in 3D isn’t for everyone, but after using NVIDIA’s first 3D Vision kit with one of Samsung’s then-new 120Hz LCD displays, we truly enjoyed the experience. Not only was a new dimension (literally and figuratively) added to the games we played, but there were inherent advantages to using a 120Hz LCD, both when 2D gaming and just working on the desktop. There was no denying NVIDIA had an uphill battle convincing gamers to put on a pair of beefy, active-shutter glasses, and spring for a new monitor, but for those that took... Read more...
Size matters, sure, but so does power efficiency. It's becoming an increasingly important thing this day and age, with power constraints becoming all the more evident and efficiency numbers becoming just as important as diagonal inches, resolution specifications or asking price. LG Display is taking note, and this week they're unveiling a set that they're calling the world's most energy efficient. The company's 47" HD LCD panel offers up vertical single side LED backlight technology, which promises maximum brightness while consuming less electricity than other LCD TV panels over 40 inches in size and even normal PC monitors over 20 inches in size. The newly developed LCD panel achieves the world’s... Read more...
A chord of three strands is not easily broken, or at least Sony, Hitachi, and Toshiba hope so. The three companies are merging their respective small- and medium-sized LCD display businesses (i.e., smartphone and tablet screens) and joining together with Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ). The new company will be called Japan Display. Although three major electronics manufacturers joining forces is big enough news by itself, the involvement of the INCJ adds a layer of intrigue. INCJ is semi-public and receives some funding from the Japanese government; Reuters reports that as much as 90% of its funding, in fact, comes from the government. The INCJ, by investing 200 billion yen, will... Read more...
Back in the day, even a 19-inch CRT weighed around 40 pounds and dominated your computer desk with all that junk in the trunk. But like everything else in the realm of technology, computer displays evolved. First came LCDs, and then LCD displays sporting an LED backlight like the Dell S2330 Ultra Slim monitor. That's one of the reasons why computer monitors and televisions are thinner than ever. For Dell, the S2330 Ultra Slim monitor is the company's thinnest panel ever. We're talking Mary-Kate Olsen thin, only better looking and presumably not plagued with issues.... Read more...
Once upon a time, CRT monitors ruled the land. They were big, they were bulky, and you could easily throw your back out if you ignored your chiropractor's advice to bend at the knees and keep your chin up, when picking up heavy objects. Back in the day, a 19-inch CRT weighed around 40 pounds and dominated your computer desk with all that junk in the trunk. But like everything else in the realm of technology, computer displays evolved. First came LCDs, and then LCD displays sporting an LED backlight like the S2330 Ultra Slim monitor that Dell sent us. One of the main advantages to using an LED backlight is it takes up less room than the cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) type backlight found... Read more...

Dell's new S2330MX Ultra Slim monitor might do for your current LCD what your first LCD did for your CRT monitor: make it look fat by comparison. That's because the S2330MX is Dell's slimmest monitor yet with a profile that measures a scant 0.3 inches, which is thinner than many smartphones. Let that last bit sink in for a moment. Dell actually let the cat out of the bag yesterday in a YouTube video pre-announcing the display (see below), but stopped short of giving viewers the full skinny (see what we did there?), including price. Today's a new day, the S2330MX has a product page, and we have the details. The S2330MX is a 23-inch LED backlit LCD display that measures 21.74 x 7.41 x 16.15 (W... Read more...
