GoPro cameras were the only action cameras out there for a while, but that's definitely not the case today. There are a bunch of different competitors targeting the action market. In July, Canon rolled out a camera called the IVY REC that aimed right at the GoPro. Not to be outdone, GoPro has unveiled its latest action cameras called the Hero8 Black and the Max along with new mods that go with the camera. The new Hero8 Black camera has some new features that help it to record better video, including HyperSmooth 2.0 video stabilization. HyperSmooth 2.0 dramatically improves stabilization over version 1.0. GoPro notes that Hypersmooth 2.0 works in all resolutions and frame rates and has a Boost... Read more...
Motorola has a history of delivering Android smartphones that are packed with features, but don't break the bank. The latest entry from the company is the Moto One Action, which reserves its most innovative feature for its video recording capabilities. Like many flagship smartphones available today, the Moto One Action has a triple camera setup on the rear. There is a 12MP primary sensor with phase detection autofocus along with a 5MP depth camera for adding effects like natural blur for portrait shots. But where the magic comes into play is with the addition of a 117-degree ultra-wide-angle action video camera. This ultra-wide-angle camera gives you shots more in line with that you'd see... Early this month we discussed leaked images claiming to show what the next generation of GoPro cameras would look like and gave up some details on the devices. Those cameras have now gone official confirming the details of the leak. GoPro has three versions of the camera that are differentiated by their color and the features supported. The cameras include the Hero7 Black, Hero7 Silver, and Hero7 White. The Hero7 Black is a camera capable of recording 4K video at 60 fps, 2.7K video at 120 fps, and 1080p video at 240 fps. It can also shoot still images at up to 30 fps and has what GoPro calls HyperSmooth video stabilization. A vertical portrait mode supports social media, and the camera... Read more...
It appears that action camera maker GoPro has plans to launch a new camera series in the coming weeks. No official word about the new cameras has come down from GoPro, but the launch must be close because images of a new Best Buy display going up in at least one store have surfaced. The actual announcement and launch of the cameras are expected later this month. All we have in the way of information on the cameras comes in what we can glean from a trio of images that surfaced on The Verge and Reddit. The images show that GoPro is going back to its older naming convention with cameras with the Hero 7 White, Silver, and Black editions. It appears that the White and Silver cameras have no front... When it comes to consumer drones, many people look to DJI for products like the Spark and the Mavic Pro. However, GoPro, which made a name for itself with action cameras, though that it could encroach into DJI's territory with its swanky Karma drone. Well, things haven't exactly been going well for the company on the drone front. A fresh report from TechCrunch says that GoPro will lay off between 200 to 300 employees this week, with most of those dismissals coming from its aerial drone division. According to a letter that the publication was able to obtain, GoPro says that its it taking this drastic movie to "better align our resources with business requirements". It is time to take your GoPro footage to the next level. The company just announced the pilot program for Fusion, its new spherical 360 Degree VR 5.2K camera. GoPro founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman remarked, “Fusion is just that, the ability to capture every angle simultaneously…as though you had six GoPro cameras fused into one. Whether filming for VR or traditional fixed-perspective content, Fusion represents the state-of-the-art in versatile spherical capture.” Fusion is particularly notable for its “OverCapture” feature that is enabled by its 5.2K resolution. Users will be able to capture non-VR videos and photos in HD from spherical angles. This device is therefore ideal for creators of... Read more...
Uh oh Houston, we have a problem. Er, make that San Mateo, the city in California where action camera maker GoPro is headquartered. GoPro has also begun dabbling in drones, though things have gotten off to a somewhat rocky start. By that we mean the company has issued a recall for its first drone, called Karma, while it figures out and fixes an issue that can cause it to lose power during flight. The good news for GoPro is that the market isn't flush with Karma drones. Only around 2,500 units have been purchased by consumers since the Karma launched last month, so this is far from a disastrous situation. Even better is that GoPro has not received any reports of injuries or property damage, so... Read more...
In the technology sector, you either adapt to an ever-changing landscape and innovate or whither away and day (some companies quicker than others). Enter GoPro, a household name in the action video recorder market for adventure seekers. Demand for the company's Hero line of cameras has dwindled causing it to post a loss in the third quarter. Can drones lift the company back up? GoPro collected $240.6 million in revenue for the three month period ended September 30, 2016, down 40 percent from $400.3 million year-over-year. After paying the bills, GoPro tallied a loss of $104 million for the quarter, compared to an $18.8 million profit in the same quarter last year. That's about a 654 percent swing... Read more...
If you are interested in creating 360° VR content, then perk up your ears. GoPro’s Six Camera Omni will be available for sale on August 17th for $5,000 USD.  The Omni is a six-camera rig that relies upon pixel-level synchronization. This synchronization allows the six cameras to act as one. If the user adjusts something on the primary camera, the other cameras will adjust accordingly. The Omni cannot function unless all of the cameras are in the same mode and functioning SD cards are in place. The camera is made from aluminum in order to dissipate heat, withstand falls, and rig components can be easily replaced if necessary. The Omni can be powered through an external battery pack or from... Read more...
The competition is heating up in the virtual reality arena, not just on the consumer side with headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, but for content creators as well with an increasing number of hardware options. GoPro seems particularly interested in the category as it expands its VR lineup to include the Omni, a six-camera rig for recording 360-degree video. Priced at $5,000 for an all-inclusive setup, the Omni isn't cheap, but it's more accessible than GoPro's $15,000 Odyssey package or Facebook's $30,000 Surround 360 platform. It's also a much more compact system than either of those solutions—the cube-shaped device is just big enough to hold half a dozen HERO4 Black cameras and proprietary... Read more...
As you can see by the steady stream of virtual reality (VR) headsets that have hit the market (Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive) and those that are incoming (PlayStation VR), consumers are in for a real treat when it comes to experiencing media and gaming content. The folks at GoPro are looking to make it easier to produce VR content at a somewhat reasonable price with its new Omni camera rig. The Omni is capable of housing six GoPro HERO Black cameras and uses proprietary hardware to enable “pixel-level synchronization” between the cameras to provide high-quality 360-degree video footage. While Omni will not shoot in 3D, it is also fully integrated with GoPro’s Kolor... Read more...
We’ve been wondering what the next big step would be for the Twitter-owned Periscope live streaming app, and today we got a look at what’s been going on behind the scenes. Periscope announced today that it will support live broadcasting from GoPro action cameras. Live broadcasting is as simple as connecting your GoPro Hero 4 to your iPhone via Wi-Fi, opening the Periscope app and then hitting the Broadcast button. You can still use the Periscope app while you’re broadcasting, and you can still see comments as they come in. GoPro videos obviously are stored on the action... Read more...
GoPro might have been better off waiting until the weekend to report preliminary financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2015. Instead, it held off until after trading hours yesterday to reveal an expected revenue miss and anticipated job cuts only to wake up to a plummeting stock price.Shares of GoPro are taking a beating in early day trading. Initially shares dropped by upwards of 25 percent but have slightly recovered and are now trading at $12.27, down around 16 percent with slight fluctuations in both directions. That's a far cry from the more than $90 per share GoPro was commanding just months after going public with a $24 IPO in June 2014.The reason for... Read more...
