Congratulations to those of you who've spent the weekend playing Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth -- it sure beats raking leaves or any other chores that are typically reserved for the end of the work week. Want to make your gaming experience even better? If you own an AMD graphics card with the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, there's a beta driver available to enable the Mantle API in Beyond Earth. AMD Catalyst 14.9.2 is now available to download, and in addition to bringing Mantle to Beyond Earth, it also includes dual graphics optimizations for KritiKa an SheDiaoZeroe, and a Project Cars profile update. The rest of what's included in the driver package are a bunch of fixes for... Read more...
Intel's attempt to flip the script on integrated graphics began when the chip maker introduced its Iris (HD Graphics 5100) and Iris Pro (HD Graphics 5200) GPUs infused on certain 4th Generation Core (read: Haswell) processors. We've seen some promising results out of these parts, and with a major driver update now available, Intel says you can expect "stunning performance improvements." According to Intel, the driver update gives Iris and Iris Pro a significant boost in gaming performance with Intel's anti-aliasing feature CMAA (Conservative Morphological Anti-Aliasing) while at the same time boosting battery life through newer power conservation techniques like Adaptive Rendering Control. Intel's... Read more...
AMD came out swinging when it launched its R9 Series of graphics cards, including the Radeon R9 290, which goes toe-to-toe with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 780 card. In our review of the Radeon R9 290 part, we recorded solid performance throughout our batch of benchmarks, and we couldn't help but be impressed by its aggressive price point ($399). Unfortunately for AMD, users began reporting throttling issues with the card causing performance to dip by over 15 percent. We were able to replicate the throttling issue, which ultimately forced us to pull our recommendation. That's the bad the news. And the good news? It appears AMD has found the culprit and issued a fix. According to AMD, the culprit lies... Read more...
It can feel a little like Christmas when new drivers become available, as they typically promise performance upgrades, problem fixes, and improved all-around support; the latest beta drivers from NVIDIA certainly deliver. Version 304.79 of the R304 Verde drivers adds or updates support for SLI profiles for a number of games, including The Secret World, End of Nations, Nexuiz, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Tornado Force, and Tribes: Ascend. The update will fix several known issues, including a power management settings mode problem, getting a black screen after a driver installation, and a bug that caused a system reboot instead of a shutdown. Those playing Civilization V on GeForce 400 and 500... Read more...
If you're an AutoCAD or 3ds Max user, you'll find this information out of AMD today to be very interesting. ATI's FirePro application support team have devised a way to drastically increase the performance of FirePro or FireGL workstation graphics cards when running AutoCAD or 3ds Max. AMD has just released a set of performance plug-ins designed to provide additional optimizations for AutoCAD 2010, AutoCAD 2011, 3ds Max 2010, and 3ds Max 2011. With these plug-ins, ATI claims their "FirePro graphics cards offer more than double the performance over comparable consumer graphics cards." AMD claims users can expect significant improvements in visual quality as well. Plug-ins for... Read more...
It's been a dream of Earth's residents since The Jetsons made us believe it was a possibility: true auto-pilot. It's alive and well in some cases, but not all. Existing commercial airplanes have an auto-pilot button that guides the planes controls based on the route it needs to take, but that's relatively easy. There's no highway to follow, no drunk drivers to watch out for, and no posted speed limits to obey. Doing the same thing in an automobile is definitely more difficult, as you can probably tell given that no auto-pilot car yet exists for the consumer market. But just because there's no car like that yet doesn't mean that researchers aren't working towards that goal. A team at North Carolina... Read more...
If you haven't updated the driver for your laptop's touchpad lately, you may want to think about doing so, particularly if your laptop has a Synaptics touchpad. As a user on Hardware Zone forums discovered, there's a new driver from Synaptics that enables multitouch gestures as well as two-finger scrolling and three-finger click. What's really cool is that this driver enables this functionality for older laptops that didn't previously support these functions. Although it was thought that older touchpads were not capable of multi-touch, this driver update appears to prove otherwise. Another pleasant surprise is the unlocking of two- and three-finger gestures since even modded drivers were not... Read more...

Who could seriously say that in these troubled times, police don't need all the help they can get?  And, quite honestly, particularly in the neighborhood (no pun intended) of speeders.  Even without watching TV shows such as TruTV's Speeders, all one has to do is look around to see that one reason people may not want a new 55 or even 60 MPH maximum speed limit, despite high gas prices, is that they looooove to drive fast.Landon Wilburn, 11, grew tired of speeders zipping through his subdivision, so after growing hoarse shouting at them, he decided to take matters into his own hands. The youngster, who used to shout at speeders to slow down as they drove through the Stone Lakes subdivision... An interesting new conspiracy theory has arisen today. It appears that several laptop OEMs have been having "issues" with their sound card drivers: specifically, the Stereo Mix option is missing from their drivers, which basically means you can't record audio (except from Mic In). Whoops! Is this a case of Dell and others working with the RIAA? A ripten writer noticed this on his Dell laptop. Linkage between Dell (and other OEMs) and the RIAA were posited an obvious theory. Now, while we wouldn't put it past the RIAA to do this, we have what's probably a more likely theory: driver bug. Notably, these incidents seem to have occurred on laptops using a SigmaTel sound card. SigmaTel pretty much... Read more...
You'll recall last week NVIDIA announced that its 177.39 drivers would provide PhysX support on the GeForce 9800 GTX, 9800 GTX+, and GTX 260/280 cards. You'll also probably recall the big dust-up over whether or not NVIDIA was cheating in terms of optimizations for various benchmarks. Whether or not you believe that (read their response here), for end users, the real question is: "where are the drivers? I want to try them." NVIDIA has posted beta versions of 177.39 on its site. Just remember, they're beta, so the normal warnings apply. Windows Vista 32-bit Windows Vista 64-bit Windows XP 32-bit Windows XP 64-bit... Read more...

I like clever people. Not smart people, exactly. Smart people do dumb things all the time. I'm talking about people who look at a situation a little differently than the rest of the crowd, and profit from it. Not cheaters. Inspired. So while everyone was lining up to pay an outrageous amount for an iPhone, because the item seemed nifty or cool, others looked at it as an opportunity. They bought one, and in the most counterintuitive act you could think of, tore it apart. And then they invested in the manufacturers of the component parts, unconcerned with whether an iPhone deserved its hype, but knowing that the hype would make it sell. Among the beneficiaries of Apple's business and... Read more...
