Who could seriously say that in these troubled times, police don't need all the help they can get?  And, quite honestly, particularly in the neighborhood (no pun intended) of speeders.  Even without watching TV shows such as TruTV's Speeders, all one has to do is look around to see that one reason people may not want a new 55 or even 60 MPH maximum speed limit, despite high gas prices, is that they looooove to drive fast.Landon Wilburn, 11, grew tired of speeders zipping through his subdivision, so after growing hoarse shouting at them, he decided to take matters into his own hands. The youngster, who used to shout at speeders to slow down as they drove through the Stone Lakes subdivision... An interesting new conspiracy theory has arisen today. It appears that several laptop OEMs have been having "issues" with their sound card drivers: specifically, the Stereo Mix option is missing from their drivers, which basically means you can't record audio (except from Mic In). Whoops! Is this a case of Dell and others working with the RIAA? A ripten writer noticed this on his Dell laptop. Linkage between Dell (and other OEMs) and the RIAA were posited an obvious theory. Now, while we wouldn't put it past the RIAA to do this, we have what's probably a more likely theory: driver bug. Notably, these incidents seem to have occurred on laptops using a SigmaTel sound card. SigmaTel pretty much... Read more...
You'll recall last week NVIDIA announced that its 177.39 drivers would provide PhysX support on the GeForce 9800 GTX, 9800 GTX+, and GTX 260/280 cards. You'll also probably recall the big dust-up over whether or not NVIDIA was cheating in terms of optimizations for various benchmarks. Whether or not you believe that (read their response here), for end users, the real question is: "where are the drivers? I want to try them." NVIDIA has posted beta versions of 177.39 on its site. Just remember, they're beta, so the normal warnings apply. Windows Vista 32-bit Windows Vista 64-bit Windows XP 32-bit Windows XP 64-bit... Read more...

I like clever people. Not smart people, exactly. Smart people do dumb things all the time. I'm talking about people who look at a situation a little differently than the rest of the crowd, and profit from it. Not cheaters. Inspired. So while everyone was lining up to pay an outrageous amount for an iPhone, because the item seemed nifty or cool, others looked at it as an opportunity. They bought one, and in the most counterintuitive act you could think of, tore it apart. And then they invested in the manufacturers of the component parts, unconcerned with whether an iPhone deserved its hype, but knowing that the hype would make it sell. Among the beneficiaries of Apple's business and... Read more...
