SAMSUNG Introduces 60nm-class Processing for 2Gb DDR2 DRAM Seoul, Korea - September 12, 2007 : Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has developed the industry's first 60 nanometer (nm)-class 2 gigabit DDR2 DRAM and will begin mass producing it later this year. Compared with 80nm 2Gb DDR2, the 60 nanometer (nm)-class with a speed of 800 megabits per second has improved DRAM performance up to 20%. As we reported earlier, technical difficulties at a transformer substation caused Korean memory factories owned by Samsung to go shut down until the situation could be resolved.   It seems that issues have now been resolved and the plants running again are ramping up to full production as quickly as they can.The outage has come a particularly bad time for companies that make hybrid drives, solid state drives, and of course, MP3 players.  Increasing demand and off-line factories mean higher priced products for consumers, at least in the short-term. “Samsung said all six lines were fully operating by 12:00 p.m. (11:00 p.m. EDT), earlier than expected. After an accidental power cut near one of Samsung’s plants in Seoul, Korea that forced some six factories to halt production, the number one DRAM manufacturer may face a serious problem with NAND flash supply. Used in portable media players, cell phones, and other such devices, the recent event has cost the company an estimated loss of over $54 million. In the race to develop the first LCD panel that supports the new DisplayPort interface, the champion turns out to be none other than memory chip giant Samsung. After its approval by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), DisplayPort is said to be the successor to the DVI, LVDS, and eventually VGA interfaces. As for Samsung’s first LCD panel to incorporate DisplayPort, it measures 30 inches and supports a total data rate of 10.8Gbps, which is twice the rate of contemporary display interfaces and thus allows the LCD panel to display a 2,560x1,600 pixel resolution image at 10 bits of color depth (1.07 billion colors) without any color smear. It seems that Samsung may be in the process of revising the specs and prices for their upcoming UMPC, the Q1 Ultra.  Sadly, it might be that the specs are going down and the price is going up.  If you've already pre-ordered one of these, you may want to re-evaluate your purchase. "The first signs of worry for the Q1U-EL came in early June. Retailers began to change the specs for the Q1U-EL before the units started shipping -- the 600MHz A100 processor was tossed in favor of the faster 800MHz A110. Considering that this device isn't a whole lot larger than the Nokia N-Gage, it has very impressive stats: "The Q1 Ultra will be riding on Intel's Centrino platform, codenamed Santa Rosa, and will be sporting a new Core 2 based processor running at a mere 800MHz. Intel's 965 chipset will provide the core logic, and by association a GMA3000-derived graphics chipset will offer DirectX 9.0c features. Samsung has recently made available it's first hybrid hard drives with the introduction of the MH80 series. Tech News World reported that the hybrid drives, sporting either 128Mb or 256Mb of OneNAND flash memory, will come in 80Gb, 120Gb, and 160GB sizes. Samsung claims their new hybrid drives will allow faster OS boot times by up to 50%, faster resume times, extended battery life, and increased reliability. The blokes at the inquirer have pointed out that Samsung is now shipping laptop hybrid drives to its customers: "The MH80 series comes in 80GB, 120GB and 180GB sizes. The 2.5-inch drive has 128 or 256MB of flash memory and combines mangetic [sic] optical characteristics. Samsung claims it will give faster boot and resume times, better reliability and increased battery life." Samsung also manufactures desktop hard drives, but no word on when they will go hybrid. It's easy to get caught up in announcements of breakthroughs in chip technology. But the only announcement that's of any use, really, is that they're being manufactured somewhere. Samsung announced today that 60-nanometer DRAM chips are coming off their line -- right now. The new process can increase production efficiency by 40 percent over the 80-nanometer technology which has been deployed in dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip manufacturing since last year, the world's largest memory chipmaker said. Some of you may say "that just ain't right!" and we'd have to agree completely.  However the folks at Samsung think there's a market for a USB-only LCD panel.  Here's the G2 from the folks at EverythingUSB.  Ermm... They would know, we suppose.   "The catch is that Samsung does not say how they intend to process the graphics. Odds are the graphics for the USB display will be processed on the CPU. That means less performance for both graphically demanding applications and the PC as a whole will take a performance hit. Samsung electronics has announced the first double-sided LCD screen that is able to show a different image on each side. Akihabara news has the lowdown. The breakthrough LCD product makes use of Samsung's new double-gate, thin-film transistor (TFT) architecture. TFT gates are electronic components that convert the necessary voltage at the pixel level, which controls the liquid crystal alignment needed to reproduce on-screen images. Samsung's new double-sided LCD has two gates that operate each pixel instead of one, so the screen on the front can display different images than the one on the back. LONDON - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has begun sampling a 50-nanometer, 16-Gbit NAND flash memory for use in solid-state disk drive applications. The memory is expected to go into volume production at some time during the first quarter of 2007, Samsung said. Samsung did not state whether the 16-Gbit memory is monolithically integrated or made up from multiple chips in a single package, but it did say that the memory is the first NAND flash memory made using a 50 nanometer manufacturing process. However, Samsung itself claimed to have made a 32-Gbit memory in a 40-nm process in September 2006 based on a novel high-k gate dielectric including tantalum. DigiTimes has a nice rundown on the latest and greatest from the big three.  Samsung's new display is just 0.82mm thick Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world's largest provider of thin-film transistor, liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels announced today that it has developed the thinnest reported LCD panel, one no thicker than a credit card at 0.82mm, which is 0.07mm thinner than the panel previously reported to be the world's slimmest. Hard drive shuts itself off after detecting the laws of gravity Samsung introduced today two new lines of hard drives featuring an optional free-fall sensor. The M80 SATA Series and M80 Series drives can optionally be fitted with a free-fall sensor that will park the drive and turn it off upon sensing a drop of 30cm or about a foot. Both lines use Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology and come in a 2.5" form factor. The M80 SATA and M80 Series are Samsung's first hard drives based on PMR technology. NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cingular Wireless, the No. 1 U.S. wireless service, said on Monday it would sell a slim cell phone from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. with a computer-like keyboard and a music and video player aimed at attracting both business and consumer customers. The BlackJack, the latest device with both entertainment and business features such as e-mail, follows the footsteps of the "Q" phone from Motorola Inc. and the Pearl from Research In Motion Ltd., both launched earlier this year. Samsung is trying to marry nanotube technology to LCD displays and make great looking, inexpensive screens. They're in a footrace with all the other manufacturers to determine what kind of technology will ultimately sit in your living room and bore or entertain you: The prototype essentially represents the marriage of two separate avenues of TV technology and could help dramatically lower the cost of LCD TVs in the future. Yet another development in the ongoing Department of Justice antitrust investigation. Yesterday Sandy Drew reported on the Departments Probe of Sony. Last month Toshiba was contacted by the DOJ. Exactly what will happen from this investigation is yet unknown. Stay tuned for more detail. An industry first, Samsung has developed a new 50nm DRAM chip, which will increase production efficiency by 55% over their 60nm chip. As DigiTimes reports, the new DDR2 chip has quite a bit of new technology in it, including a multi-layered dielectric layer, 3D transistor design, and can be adapted to various types of memory such as graphics and mobile DRAM.
