Lenovo ThinkPad 25 Anniversary Edition Review: Retro Style, Modern Performance

Performance of the storage system in a laptop is a big deal for many users since its has a direct effect on how fast you can launch programs, transfer files and general system responsiveness. We fired up ATTO Disk to test how well its 512GB Samsung NVMe SSD performs on sequential disk transfer speeds with different file sizes.

ThinkPad 25 Anniversary Edition ATTO Test

We've seen impressive performance from Samsung NVMe SSDs in the past on other Lenovo machines, and the ThinkPad 25 Anniversary Edition continues that trend pushing well north of 1.7GB/sec for reads and about 1.5GB/sec for writes.

We always want to know how well any laptop we are testing will perform in the general-purpose sort of computing tasks that make up the bulk of the workload most users perform. These tests will put the CPU and GPU on board the ThinkPad 25 Anniversary Edition under some strain so we can see how well things shake out.

The ThinkPad 25 Anniversary Edition didn't hit the top spot in our SunSpider test, but the machine did break the top five taking the fourth-place sport right above the Asus ZenBook 3 Deluxe UX490 and right below the Asus ZenBook 3 UX390UA-XH74, which is an impressive performance. The ThinkPad 25 also performed very well in the Cinebench R11.5 test, landing in the third spot among other systems we tested, scoring well above the machine in the fourth-place slot and with strong GPU performance that's in the hunt with other test machines sporting discrete graphics.

Full System Testing

We use several tests from the PCMark 8 benchmark suite including the Storage, Work accelerated, and Home accelerated tests. The Lenovo ThinkPad 25 AE put in another solid performance on this benchmark.

The ThinkPad 25 AE landed in the seventh place spot here, not a standout system, but decent overall performance. We sort rankings based on the work accelerated number, so if you have different priorities the ThinkPad 25 could be higher up the list.
