AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800 Review: Potent Pro-Vis Graphics Punch

Before bringing our Radeon Pro evaluation to a close, we'd like to cover a couple of final data points -- namely, power consumption and noise. Throughout all of our benchmarking and testing, we monitored acoustics and tracked how much power our test system was consuming using a power meter. Our goal was to give you an idea of how much power each graphics configuration used while idling and also while under a heavy workload. Please keep in mind that we were testing total system power consumption at the outlet here, not the power being drawn by the graphics cards alone.

Power Consumption Testing

The AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800 finish in the middle of the pack in terms of power consumption, which is actually the good thing if we consider their performance. Both Radeon Pro W7000 series cards offer considerably more performance than the Radeon Pro W6800 in the vast majority of circumstances. Though it was faster overall, the W7800 used only marginally more power than the W6800. The AMD Radeon Pro W7900 clearly outran the NVIDIA RTX A6000 in the majority of tests as well and consumed less power while doing it. They might not be at the top of the chart, but the AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800 are more efficient overall then the previous-gen and NVIDIA's RTX A6000.

Temperatures and noise are also non-issues with the AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800. As you can see in the hardware data captured during a VRMark run, the GPU temperature peaks at about 80°C and framerates / performance remain consistent throughout the run.

The junction temperature, as reported by AMD's own utility shows the GPUs on both cards peaking somewhat higher at about 90°C. Fan speeds, however, rarely exceed about 2,100RPM, which keeps the cards fairly quiet. During normal operation, we'd say both the AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800 are fairly tame and shouldn't pose an issue in terms of thermals or acoustics in any properly configured system with adequate cooling. (Note: We test inside a mid-tower chassis).

AMD AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800: The Verdict

AMD hit a home run with the AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800 in our opinion. Looking back through the numbers, the AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800 offer excellent overall performance, with increased power efficiency, moderate thermals and acoustics, and they offer class-leading display output options, that are ready for next-gen displays.

Perhaps most importantly, AMD is also pricing the AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800 aggressively, relatively speaking at least. The AMD Radeon Pro W7900 has an MSRP of $3,999, which significantly undercuts the NVIDIA RTX A6000. It's also approximately 1/2 the price of the newer (more powerful) Ada-generation RTX 6000. AMD positions the Radeon Pro W7800 similarly. Versus the RTX A5500 -- which has less memory, higher power, and will perform well below the A6000 we tested -- the W7800 is priced about 20% lower.

The bottom line is, the AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800 offer excellent performance, leading-edge features, and competitive pricing in their respective market segments. They don't skunk the competition across the board, but the AMD Radeon Pro W7900 And W7800 are well-rounded products that should serve prospective customers exceedingly well and we have zero reservations recommended them to anyone in the market for professional workstation GPU.
