Just this past week, the Game Developers Conference was held in downtown San Francisco, CA. If you're unfamiliar with GDC, it is the "world's largest professionals-only game industry event." In other words, everyday gaming enthusiast can't just walk in off the street to take a look around. GDC is held every spring and is basically a forum for learning and networking for the creators of computer, console, handheld, mobile, and online games. Hundreds of companies come out to present their latest wares, preview upcoming titles, and also interview thousands of potential game developers. Google has been an innovator for years now. They fundamentally changed the way we searched for items on the Internet, and for many, they have changed how one perceives email. Gmail and Google (search engine) are both best-in-class tools, and the Android operating system is seriously challenging iPhone OS and webOS. Needless to say, the world pays attention when Google makes a move, and it's making a huge move this morning in the social networking space.During a press conference today at the company's Mountain View headquarters, Google Buzz was introduced. Preacher: "It's official on Facebook, it's official in my book!"We kid you not, that's the quote from a pastor who officiated a recent wedding between two obvious tech nerds. Dana Hanna, a recently married dude from Maryland, actually paused his own wedding after the pastor announced that he and his wife were now officially married in order to bust out two smartphones from his pocket. Once they were out, he and his new wife Tweeted and updated their Facebook profiles to immediately show their new status to the world. Before they even had a chance to lock lips and make it to their own reception, the world knew these two were together. His Tweet? "Standing at the altar with @TracyPage where a second... Read more...
As a company, Google has never really been one to sit back and just watch what the other guys are doing; instead, the company is continuously venturing into new areas. Now, they’re looking to get in on the social networking action by going head-to-head with Facebook’s newly launched Connect. The goal of Google Friend Connect is to make secure, distributed social networking easy. Behind the scenes, Friend Connect uses standards like OAuth and OpenID.  OAuth facilitates... Read more...
In the last six months we've seen a wide variety of cost effective, yet powerful, video cards hit the market. First came NVIDIA's superb GeForce 8800 GT last October which, despite being introduced at an upper mid-range price point, provided top-notch performance not far off from the best cards of the day at nearly 1/3 the price. The 8800 GT was followed closely by the launch of the thrifty GeForce 9600 GT just a few months later which provided similar performance for even less. Then, last week, ATI fired back with the excellent Radeon HD 4850 and Radeon HD 4870 video cards which retail at the same affordable mid-range prices but provide strong... Have you ever dropped off your PC for repairs and wondered if the techs might be looking over your private media collection?  If so, you’ve not alone.  The Consumerist decided to do a little research on the subject, using the Geek Squad techs as their test subjects.  Instead of just using logfiles for evidence, they actually have video of the alleged incident. “To investigate claims by current and former Geek Squad techies (see "The 10 Page Geek Squad Confession - "Stealing Customers' Nudie Pics Was An Easter Egg Hunt"), we loaded a computer with porn and rigged it to make a video of itself. We captured every cursor movement, every program opened, every file accessed. Everything that the user... Read more...
Wired.com has all the proof you'll need to convince your prospective partner that you'll be a good lover. <insert your own joystick joke here> "I've read recently that geeks make better lovers because they are so unaccustomed to romance that they will do anything for their mates. Also because geeks don't have the social skills to cheat (wanna bet?). Yeah, ha ha, let's chuckle at the stereotypes. Might as well add that geeks won't waste valuable relationship time watching football. Or that geeks are clueless and fashion-impaired and have the social skills of a bowl of fruit. But you know what? Humorous Top-10 lists aside, geeks really do make the best lovers, for reasons that have... Read more...
