If you’re part of the Windows Insider Program, you received an update last night for build 10536 of the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview. The updated version sports several new fixes and features, including an updated Photos app. “This update introduces a folder view that makes it easy for you to see your OneDrive and PC folders in the Photos app,” said Microsoft’s Gabe Aul in a blog post. “On your phone, you can also see folders on your SD card.” There’s a known issue in which settings you adjusted previously may hinder uploading to OneDrive. Open the navigation menu and check your settings to make sure camera upload is on. You’ll also want to make sure the Photos app is 17.2, the most recent... Read more...
Windows 10 Mobile is just around the corner, and so are a couple of flagship Lumia devices that will run on the new platform. Specifically, Microsoft is expected to introduce the Lumia 950 (codenamed Talkman) and Lumia 950 XL (codenamed Cityman) during a press even in October. What look to be official press renderings of both devices have been leaked to the web courtesy of none other than Evan Blass, aka @evleaks on Twitter. The handsets look similar to each other with the same overall design, with only subtle differences between the two.The slightly larger cyan-colored handset is the Lumia 950 XL. It has a 5.7-inch display with a 2560x1440 resolution, whereas the all-black Lumia 950 sports a... Read more...
All eyes are going to be on Apple next month, as the company is scheduled to announce its next generation iPhone 6S/6S Plus smartphones along with new iPads (and possibly a next generation Apple TV). But attention will shift in October, as Microsoft is set to launch its Surface Pro 4 along with the long-awaited refresh to its Lumia smartphone range at the flagship level. A Surface Pro 4 is almost certainly a lock for the October event, given that the current Surface Pro 3 is over a year old, which is pretty long lifecycle in the tech industry. We don’t have much by way of leaked features or specs with regards to this next generation tablet, but it wouldn’t be out of line to expect Skylake-based... Read more...
Just when we were ribbing Microsoft for taking its sweet time to release a new build of Windows 10 Mobile, the company responds today with a fresh build. We can’t say that we’re surprised, considering that Microsoft’s Gabe Aul tweeted yesterday, “We have a build that is looking good (in the 105xx range) to share very soon, but it won't be today.” Little did we know that “very soon” actually meant tomorrow. And here we are, starting at Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10512. It has just hit the Fast ring for testers, which means that Slow ring testers that have been without an update for well over a month will just have to wait even longer to see a new build delivered to their smartphones.... When Microsoft delivered test builds of Windows 10 to Windows Insiders, it did so with a Fast and Slow ring. Users on the Fast ring received more frequent updates, but had to deal with builds that sometimes weren’t quite ready for primetime. Slow ring users received updates at a more languid pace, but the builds they did receive were for the most part very solid. The same holds true for Windows 10 Mobile, which is currently under testing with a Fast/Slow ring. However, it seems lately that Microsoft has forgotten all about the Fast ring, as neither group of Windows Insiders have received a fresh build of the operating system in a month — the last build, Build 10166, was delivered to Fast ring... The Internet is defiantly abuzz over yesterday’s release of Windows 10. The operating system was made available as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users, and can be obtained via Windows Update, ISO, or through the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. But while Windows 10 Home and Pro will appease the vast majority of desktop, laptop, convertible, and tablet users, there are still millions of people around the globe with smartphones running Window Phone 8.1. Microsoft promised that Windows 10 Mobile would be made available later this year as a free upgrade for Windows Phone users, and the company is now giving us an idea of which devices will be eligible for the new operating system. Earlier... Read more...
Microsoft’s venture into the smartphone market has been a disaster. The Redmond, Washington-based company purchased Nokia’s Devices and Services Division last year, and earlier this month announced that it was taking a $7.6 billion write-down on the $7.2 billion purchase. The Nokia folly also resulted in Microsoft positing a $2.1 billion loss for fiscal Q4 2015. So how does Microsoft plan on reversing its fortunes in the cutthroat smartphone market that is dominated by Android in market share and iOS in profits? For CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s smartphone revamp will start at the top and trickle down. “We're going to have great flagship phones for Windows 10,” said Nadella during the company’s... Microsoft’s takeover Nokia’s Devices and Services division has been nothing short of a disaster. The company is axing 7,800 employees from its phone division and is writing off $7.6 billion in costs related to last year’s $7.2 billion acquisition. “We will need to innovate in new areas, execute against our plans, make some tough choices in areas where things are not working and solve hard problems in ways that drive customer value,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella when announcing the drastic measures he took with regards to Microsoft’s smartphone operations. “In the longer term, Microsoft devices will spark innovation, create new categories and generate opportunity for the Windows ecosystem... Following the release of a few new Windows 10 builds for the desktop, Microsoft has released build 10166 for mobile. As with all of the recent builds, Microsoft's biggest focus right now is refining what's there, to make sure that at official launch, the OS is as stable as possible. 10166 is no exception. Requiring an opt-in to the "Fast" ring, 10166 fixes numerous known bugs found in build 10149, including an issue where the lock screen would appear frozen after an upgrade. Likewise, a strange pin entry bug has been fixed, one that allowed you to keep typing in your pin even after the correct one was entered. Some aesthetic fixes have been applied as well, notably to the accuracy of the colors... Read more...
Microsoft’s $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services division has been a disaster of epic proportions. Microsoft brought over most of Nokia’s employees into the Microsoft fold, only to jettison many of them over the past year. The culmination of this Nokia culling occurred this morning with the announcement that Microsoft is axing 7,800 employees, primarily from its smartphone division. To add insult to injury, Microsoft is taking a $7.6 billion impairment charge on its $7.2 billion Nokia purchase. Youch! There’s just no way to sugarcoat this unfortunate turn of events, but Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is at least trying to give the employees still standing in the smartphone division,... Read more...
Windows 10 Mobile is destined to land sometime later this year (Microsoft hasn’t given us a definite date, only saying that it will land some time after Windows 10’s July 29th debut), and it can’t come soon enough. Microsoft’s smartphone market share has been stagnant in the sub-five percent range for quite some time with no signs of improvement. The latest U.S. smartphone market share numbers from comScore so no signs of improvement, and in fact show an even further slide for Microsoft’s Windows Phone smartphone operating system. For the three-month period ending in May, Microsoft’s market share fell from 3.5 percent to 3 percent. That puts Microsoft in an extremely distant third place behind... Read more...
Opting for the Fast ring on Microsoft's Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview program means you'll gain access to new Windows builds before everyone else, but it also means having to put up with bugs that get squashed before the build trickles over to Slow ring subscribers. Case in point, Microsoft has made available Build 10136 on the Fast ring, and if you're using the previous Fast ring release (Build 10080), you'll have to jump through some hoops to upgrade. Microsoft says there's a migration bug that prevents upgrades from 10080 to 10136, and so the Redmond outfit isn't supporting that upgrade path. Instead, users of 10080 have to revert back to Windows 8.1 using Microsoft's Windows Phone Recovery... Read more...
Microsoft has made it clear that not all of its upcoming Windows 10 releases will be coming out at the same time. While we learned a few weeks ago that the desktop variant would be released on July 29, it seemed inevitable we'd have to wait a fair bit longer to see the mobile version. Well, according to the folks at Neowin, who've procured a slide destined for a Microsoft partner, we're likely to see Windows 10 Mobile drop in September. This is based on the fact that the slide notes it will "be available late next quarter", referencing Q3. There's some things to bear in mind here, such as the fact that a late Q3 launch doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to download it in Q3. That... Read more...
In mid-March, we first brought you news that Microsoft and Xiaomi were looking to get Mi 4 smartphone owners the opportunity to leave Android behind and test out the Windows 10 operating system for smartphones (now known as Windows 10 Mobile). “This partnership will allow Xiaomi and Microsoft to get direct user feedback and continue to improve the experience for China,” said Microsoft at the time. “Microsoft is thrilled to see Xiaomi embracing Windows 10 and offering this great value to their customers. We’re excited to see the feedback we receive from this audience.” It looks a though Microsoft and Xiaomi are moving on to the next phase in their relationship, as Xiaomi is now calling for beta... One of the most frustrating realities in mobile is knowing that once a new OS gets released, you may or may not receive it. This isn't a problem with iOS, as Apple has tight control over its own ecosystem, but Android and Windows Phone users routinely go without their updates, largely due to carriers that couldn't care less about putting in the effort. This helps explain why seven months out, Android 5.0 is found on a mere 9% of active Android devices. On the Windows side, ZDNet notes some good examples. Despite the fact that Lumia Denim came out in December, the update still hasn't hit AT&T's Lumia 830 or T-Mobile's Lumia 635. As frustrating as this is for owners of these devices with outdated... We learned yesterday that there will be seven variants of Windows 10. One of those variants is Windows 10 Mobile, which we have previously been calling Windows 10 for Phones. Now that Microsoft’s smartphone-oriented operating system officially has a name, the company has rolled out a new preview that brings with it some new features and additional device support. Windows 10 Mobile Build 10080 is available to Insiders on the Fast Ring, and includes the Windows Store beta which aligns visually with the complementing store on Windows 10 for PCs. Although carrier billing has not been enabled for purchases, you can use credit cards, gift cards, and PayPal to complete a transaction. Other new features... Read more...
